  1. My last big game trip was a Blue Marlin charter on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Captain himself inspected our bags and belongings prior to each days outing. He made no bones about making sure nobody EVER brought bananas out on his boat. Whatever the origin of the "myth" may be, some seasoned master anglers believe it to be true. That's good enough for me. No bananas are allowed on my boats either. Gotta' go with the pros on this one. Grady
  2. Predator, Just curious. What body of water did those perch come out of? Grady
  3. Guys, Thanks for the responses. I have been looking at the websites of some of the various places. Some might work, some can be ruled out due to their pet policy, and some look like seasonal types, but they are up there and they are starting points. I'll be calling some tomorrow. Gene, the dog is coming all the way from Dallas, Texas for this trip! I'm going to find a way to make that work. For this outing, I may have to look at places other than those you suggested, but I very well may revisit your suggestions in the future. Do you ever go up there in the winter for ice fishing? Grady
  4. OK, I'm not really sure where on the board I am supposed to post this. If it is not supposed to be here, maybe a mod could put my post in the right place. From September 16-20 my group of guys always goes up to Wellesley Island State Park, sets up a few trailers and tents, launches a few boats and fishes the heck out of the place for a few days. Apparently due to State cutbacks, the park(s) are closing up almost all the campsites at that time. What they have open is the loop where the big motorhomes etc go. We don't want to go there. We are not loud, destructive or immoral, but we are not choirboys either! We have campfires, we drink bourbon, smoke cigars, burp, fart and stay up late. Our group has a different agenda than the good folks that stay in those areas and we don't want to be a problem. All the State Parks in the area are doing the same thing that time of year, so our trip is getting tough to arrange. I am playing with idea of renting a camp for those few days where we can just have our guys only vacation, launch our boats, have our campfires, clean up after ourselves and leave it as we find it. We are looking for a place around the Wellesley, Clayton, A-Bay area. We have 5 boats, two trailers, several tents and one dog. We fish all day, clean our catches and eat them at night, have our fire, get up and do it again until we have to leave. Many of us are rental property owners ourselves, just not up there. We know how to be good tenants! Does anyone have a place they might consider letting us use, or do you have any suggestions on how to find one? I looked on the internet, but I keep finding these places that look like trophy homes. I mean some of them go so far as to tell you that you can't wear shoes in the house, you can't have a fire, you can't have fishing poles around the house or dock! To each his own I guess. Sure doesn't sound like a vacation home to me though. I need to talk to my fishing brothers. You guys know what we are doing, and what this trip is. We're harmless. We're just a bunch of brothers, fathers, uncles and good friends that like to get together every year and fish. Anybody got a way to find a camp we can use? Appreciate the help, Grady

    I-bay

Jeff, Do you know of the launch over in the Genny? It is back off Lake Rd. right by where the Fast Ferry used to be. There's a fee if the guy is still there!(hint) It think it's less than ten bucks. From here, you can run up the river and fish or shoot over to I bay along the lake. It's a little inconvenient, but if you are dead set against launching at SeaBreeze, it might be an option. I had no idea that the cops there were like that. I've launched at SeaBreeze a million times and never got a ticket. I thought that lot was a public lot. There must be some new rule, or maybe they never enforced the one they had. I can say the cops in the boat are a little over the top sometimes. I had one really get into me one evening while I was staged in the water waiting my turn to pull the boat out. I did not have my 360 light on. It was not dark, I was next to pull out, and this guy was threatening me with a ticket. After he "showed leniency" to me, he then told me to go over to the guy who was pulling his boat out and issue him a warning for not having his lights on. He stayed there until he watched me go up with my boat, tell the guy at the ramp that he was getting a warning through me, and then left us alone. I believe that unless I did this, he was going to write me up. Pretty impressive don't you think? I apologized to the guy after the cop left , but what kind of law enforcement is that? Glad you pounded the fish at least. Grady
  6. I have to laugh a little. That second picture makes you guys looks like you are prisoners in a jail made out of fishing rods for bars! If I ever have to go to jail, I hope my cell looks like that!! Grady
  7. Those of us who fish this #$%^& lake regularly know how great a day like this feels. Seneca can punish you day after day and then all at once, give you something like this. Congratulations! Hope you have many more days like it. This darn lake!! Grady PS How were the weeds?
  8. Mark, You're correct about the kings. That's a Lake Ontario only fish. You're going to find a nice mixed bag in the Finger Lakes. Along with salmonoids, there are bass, northerns, nice perch, and in some there are walleyes. Trolling programs work, vertical jigging will get you lakers if you don't have a set up for deep water trolling. Conventional presentations will get the rest. Seneca Lake should be given it's due respect in the wind. That lake can get very big and very mean in a hurry when the winds come up, especially south and north blows. I've had a few moments out there that my dry cleaner had to get me out of! You can call Roy's Marina there and ask them for conditions before you head out. I Bay, Sodus Bay, and Port Bay may be some other options if it gets a little rough out on the big pond. Best of Luck, Grady
  9. Ros and Larry have a nice selection of minnows and crawlers there at Roy's. They have a good launch there, they sell gas also if your friend need it. Also, as stated in another post, there is a lady on 5&20, just west of Byrne Dairy Store that has a good selection of Arkansas shiners, sawbellies, fatheads and worms. I believe she also has hardshell crabs. I have purchased softshell crabs from her before so I know she gets them from time to time. That's a killer bait for Seneca. Good Luck, Grady
  10. Grady White is my boat of choice as well! The company does not have a recommended preference with respect to trailers. They suggest you make your selection based on whatever your experience and personal comfort dictates. Personally, my Gradys have always been on Eagle bunk trailers Eagle manufactures trailers utilizing CAD CAM technology to fit the bunks precisely to the hull rakes and chines of these boats using Grady White's own specifications. You can't believe how nice it is to have your boat position itself exactly correct every time with such a beautifully designed trailer. I do not like rollers myself. I launch alone a fair amount of the time. These boats are heavy and they will start rolling backwards pretty easily when you are launching with rollers. I prefer to back in and float mine off the bunks. Believe me, I have probably launched a Grady White at every launch you will go to! (kind of a fishing maniac!) I have never encountered an issue or wished for a roller trailer. Whatever you decide, I commend you on your choice of boats. Grady95
  11. I took the kids out for chicken wings tonight and we just got home. Too late to call. I'll call you in the morning. By then, I should know what my office schedule looks like. Grady95
  12. Geez Louise! You guys must have looked like the Keystone Cops out there! Dale, you're making it very hard to get motivated to get the chores around the house here you know. I'm going to have to invent a strain of hay that cuts and bales itself cuz' if the fishing is like this, it's going to be a while before the equipment gets reconditioned! You win. I'll call you later. You're going to have to explain this to my wife!! Grady
  13. So, that's what a day of fishing is supposed to look like! Good for you. Hope to be putting up some pictures to match soon. Best of luck on Monday. Let us know how the day goes. Grady
  14. Good for you. Glad you found something was cooperating. That lure has always been a go-to favorite for almost everything. I have a few that look like they were run through a blender! The pike just kill that thing. Right lure, wrong week I guess. Hope you got some nice perch as well for a fish fry. May get to Erie in the fall. I'll look you up. Grady
  15. This one is pretty easy. The pike are in the weeds. If you can either see or read the weed edge with your electronics, fish the edge . Do this with shallow diving sticks or stuff like Frenzys, Bagley B's, or one of my favorites, the Rapala Countdown. Spinnerbaits are good for this too. We do well with either red/white or firetiger patterns. We call pike, "poor man's lobster." Filet them, take out the y-bones, cut the meat into chunks and boil them for 5-7 minutes in water with lemon in it, then serve them with melted butter like for lobster. First time you do this you will swear never to throw a pike back again! Good Luck, Grady
  16. I'd have to say that's a Laker with one happy kid hooked to it. Nice job Dad! Grady
  17. Looking forward to having you out on the hard water. Out there, tip ups are one way to fish, but they are the icefishing equivalent of anchoring your boat. For learning your way around, you will want to travel light and have some essentials. As stated, a couple good jigging rods, a sharp 6" hand auger and some form of shelter would get you started. There are some cool electronics, better shelters, powered augers, etc available. Ice fishing is becoming as much a tackle lunky's game as regular fishing. To get started, you can do a lot with a little. Ice fishermen are, for the most part, some of the friendliest and nicest people you will meet in the outdoors. We share knowledge, bait and tackle and hell, you can come fish in one of my holes if you want to! Ice fishing rules. You'll love it. Grady
  18. The Genny is full of fish. The areas pointed out here are the best for 'eyes IMHO. Firetiger patterns do work the best. You will get into big cats and sheephead. You also might have trips where you catch all of those plus LM and SM bass, northerns, rock bass and some perch. It's like a grab bag up there sometimes. Personally, I have been "upriver" many many times. Despite what I hear, I have never had any trouble with people. We're all there for the same thing which is to catch fish. If you are in a boat, just show some respect and courtesy for those casting from shore. Often, I'll find someone casting who wants fish and I'll give them what I catch. Anyway, I suppose the potential for trouble exists and maybe I've just had a run of luck, but the concern for personal safety might be a little overdramatized. To each his own, I guess. The walleyes are going to feed up there pretty heavily in the last hour of daylight and into the early dusk. Suggest you fish then and get back before pitch black dark. My bigger concern for personal safety really has to do with hitting something at night on the way out. You'll see trees floating in the water on the way in. Take one of those million candlepower lights on the boat in case you stay late and need to see these obstacles coming back. Anyway, it's a fun place to fish. Don't know how much jigging I would do unless you love snagging the bottom a lot. There's a strong current in there. Casting plugs will get you fewer snags. Good Luck, Grady
  19. Sticks and jerkbaits are good. That north section is good, especially outside the weed breaks. I've taken several Tigers this time of year casting crankbaits for bass. Good Luck. Grady
  20. Yes, the perch are hitting on Seneca Lake. If you have fished the lake in past seasons, those patterns that have produced for you in the past will probably reward you again. The run happens every year, everyone knows it does, but nobody wants to talk about it. I can't quite figure it out either. Check the board Myfishfinder.com. There is more reference to this on there. Good Luck, Grady
  21. Way to go there buddy, Nice to hear that the little lull in the lake has ended just as fast as it started. There has been a pretty large gathering of people out there off Trident lately. That ice is still pretty stable and has not been affected by the black hole I assume. I would suggest that folks stay away from that hole in the middle of the north end. You can't be sure of gas pockets and weaknesses near it. With such good fishing in safe areas, fortunately we don't have to take that chance. Best of luck to you, Grady
  22. Just an FYI for you, I hit Honeoye pretty hard in the winter and usually do pretty well on the panfish and walleyes. Someone shut the switch off a few days ago down there though. I have had several very unproductive outings in the last week. I have no idea why the fish are in such a negative feeding mood, but something has shut them right down. Certainly, this is just a phase, and will pass as it always does, but for now, I just wanted to try and give you one guy's honest perspective on this lake right now so you would be able to make an informed choice of where to spend your ice time. If you do go, there is a public boat launch on the south east end where a lot of very nice people gather and fish panfish. I've never met anyone out there who would not gladly talk to you and give you a few pointers. It's a nice community, and besides, that's a really good location for fish. That south end seems to concentrate them in the winter. Good luck. Let us know how your trip goes. Stay Sharp, Be Safe Grady

    Burbot

Suggest targeting these in Oneida Lake as stated earlier. They are bottom dwellers for the most part so stay down. I have caught them jigging, but they will hit your basic walleye setup. Good Luck, Grady

    Honeoye?

There's a patch of open water near the north west end but that's it. Yes, as of today, there are 4-6 inches of good clear ice under a crust of snow pretty much everywhere else. The sleds and ATVs were out today. No reports of mishaps.
  25. Sliderman, 1/8 leadhead with a twister in white, yellow or chartreuse is one effective combination. This weight may seem light, but this helps in being able to cast and retrieve it along the tops and sides of weed beds and edges. Also, as someone pointed out, there are some prerigged softbaits. They are called swimbaits and they are great for fishing drops and ledges. An example: the first major point on the east side of Conecus north of the public launch has a bay, a shallow and a drop. Their are some big pike on that drop. These heavy swimbaits have been effective in such a situation. Just be ready to cast some weight if you use them. You could probably take out a windshield with one of these things! Grady
