  1. I have had good luck with Pline florocoated. I too had very bad luck with vanish, yes stuff vanished on it.
  2. Just rebuild the drags, it is easy. you can get them from smooth drag.com I put carbon disks in my magda's and have had no problems but do prefer convectors for wire.
  3. That is awesome Rich, I took my daughter out twice and she did not have much fun. Guess she takes after her mother. I will have to try Daughter #2 when she gets old enough. Just make sure you don't let them wake you up to go, My dad did that once when I was 14, he said wake me up when you are ready, we got half way to the boat launch before he checked his watch, HA HA HA, it was 1230AM, hey I couldn't sleep. good luck this weekend. Brian
  4. My best rig is this take what you want from that: 10.5 foot mooching OKUMA pole, CV 30D loaded with Power pro 50# with mono backing, fill the spool, the line counter is more accurate that way. I use a swivel and have always used a heavy swivel to conned the dipsey to the main line, that way you can swap them out. I am playing with the snubber theory, I run with one without. I have lost more with the snubber. I use the longest lead I can get. I run the dipsey to the tip of the rod and tie my leader as long as my rodso the fly is at the but of the rod. That way it is not too long for you to get the fish up to net it. I use 40-50 LB line for my dipsey leaders for flashers. I played with leader lengths and 6 foot has been good for spoons and longer the better for flashers. Flasher affect: YES, the dipsey provides a ton of turbulance and I have had kings hit the dipsey instead of the bait. I use clear, black and chrome green depending on the depths I fish. Chrome green has been good for 85 feet or above with a green flasher.
  5. again ran them side by side with echips, Echips did well, the spinner...two releases that is it.
  6. Got out for a few hours on 28 AUG when we got a report from Rich D that there were no waves at all. We went 4 for 6, we fished 85 FOW 50-75 feet down. 150-225 on the braid dipseys set at 3. There was bait as far as the eye could see. Chartreuse echip and mirage fly, green echip and siggs green hypnotist. We had a full core and silver bullet going until it was ripped apart, we actually had a Wilson not fail. We blanked on the hammer with Dalmatian spinner had two releases on it but nothing there, Had two short hits on siggs green dolphin fly. Hit the trench this morning with anonymous associates at work to find the water a lot rougher. After a rough start Caught on big male. Its stomach looks atrophied and it had not eaten in a while. It will be a zoo in there this weekend based on the number of boats today.
  7. Finally got out Sunday evening, it stated with a little drama as we backed up and found no boat, the marina owner moved it to a deeper slip. Talking about shallow water, you should see how low the black river is!!!! It will be a slaughter for the snaggers…I mean fly fisherman. Anyhow we head out and I finally did it, yes, for get the fly box. Fortunately, I keep some stuff in my bead bag, had one icicle fly, two 25 year old squid bodies, a squeechi and a twin spin. The weather was nice but the wind picked up in the evening, not many boats and we appreciated them buzzing us as they went in. There was a good current too. We fished the trench deep and shallow and did not mark much other than small suspended fish but not salmon, they were in the mud which was apparent by their red dirty bellies when we brought them in. Wow, did they fight and fly, they where shaking like crazy and even jumping. The one I brought wanted to stay on the bottom then acted like a fresh fish at the boat. Might have to ditch my 20lb leaders, they took a beating. We went 2 for 5, did two on a green glow lyman close to the bottom (that is hard with all the crap down there) on a rigger, our dipseys did not fair so well, the icicle fired but I was lazy and just tied up a single treble, not snelled, we had a screamer on and it came off and we pulled in a tangled back word hook. The other dipsey fired and now there is a king out there with a green splatter squid, an atomik rattle and two super glow beads. Jut an observation, all the fish we have caught in the trench so far have been males.
  8. I just tink some of us are destined not to catch anythign on them. I tried and....nothing and trust me I tried.
  9. do yourself a favor, visit Jons in mexico or hit allseason sports or fat nancy's, the bonus is these guys can talk intelegently aboutthe lake and their prices are reasonable.
  10. I am always dinking, so I decided to build a light box. I went with Cool black UV lights, they are cheap too, 3 buck a pop. the kind you put in computers and already run off of a 12v power source. So I tested it and WOW!!!!! Do not waste your time making a box, get a hand held black UV light. I may just build a wond of some sort now that I have 2 of these lights. It charges tape and painted lures instantly!!!! I was playing in the dark and was amazed!!!! Super glow beads take about 30 seconds and glow better than sitting under a florescent light for 5-15 minutes. So much for th espot light, what a waste of time!!!!! Yea, I know too much time on my hands
  11. 30# copper sinks 5-6 foot per 10 yards, the #45 copper sinks 7-9, I have a 600 foot 30# copper I was wishing was a 400#45 man that is a lot of stuff to reel in. the 45 is harder to work with. Go big on the reel, CV55 or bigger
  12. Good start is to cruise this site. If you have never trolled before a charter is worth the trip and will shorten the learning curve. Dan keatings books are great for beginners. Bobsoutdoors has a deal on both of them. Do you have riggers? I tell you a dipseys take a lot of fish for us and some days all of them. If you are making the inital investment, Okuma CV30D are great dipsey reals, not the cheapest but you will thank me. Check Ebay, they had them on there for 113-119 for two of them new. Load them up with 300 yards of 30-50lb Power pro and 25lb mono backing (hopefully you will never get that low, but fill the reel up. Once you get the hang of that get another two or convert them to wire. Not sure the deal on our boat but th epower pro is outfishing the wire right now. I do not recommend wire to start, it is not forgiving if you tangle it and if it is kinked you have to replace it or splice it, not to mention it will cut anything that it comes into contact with. You do not need expensive rods, 25 dollar okuma mooching rods work great for dipseys, they are 10.5 feet long and are great because you can run good leaders and still have the rod length to get the fish up by the boat. If you get another set of dipseys you can go with 8.5 or 9.5 footers and run wire on your inside wires. Hey you are up to 4 lines now, add two riggers and that is just a start, you have boards and leadcore to consider too. Do not forget good rod holders that are strong and adjustable, dipseys run better run as low to the water as you can get them. Hope that helps
  13. Exactly, Now I hit pulaski or mail order.
  14. What a bad day. Winds in the morning made for bad currents but later were fine. We marked good fish South of the finger but no takers, North of the finger was void for us, we hit the spot from last week nothing. Worked from the finger to 250 and found 50 degree water in 250 FOW 120 feet down. When we got out there it was so clear we could see the Oswego piers and the guys fishign out of Mexico!!! WATER WAS WARM, Heck we went swimming in 130 FOW, yes guys that was us stalled and swimming. We did get a walleye on a full core and kept a couple of lake trout. Only thing we could get going were deep laketrout when we tried to trace the bottom for kings. Like my Dad says you have to take the bad with the good and we have had a great year so far. Nice little network we have going in the Henderson area, keep it up guys.
  15. Billy, Great report, our Kunfu was not so good, I coudl nto find cool water anywhere here nor the salmon, WE trolled out to 250 off of the stoney light so were pretty close to Oswego, ha ha. Nothign but lakers and one walleye of all things. The kings must be burriedon the bottom just waiting it out. Brian
  16. You guys can count on me to post a report good or bad. If good you can benifit, if bad well you know where not to go. I do believe it has stired interest in the henderson area and I am seeing more reports. You still have the local guys who would not share anything to save thier lives. I share everything, something I learned running charters. They are so bad up here you have to beg for a radio check. I can tell you where, when, how but every boat is different, billy is killing them on spinners and I cannot buy a bite on them but have been killing the salmon all the same.
  17. I have never seen them fight in lake michigan either. If yo cook them right they are good to eat but are kind of like fishing bullheads
  18. I have a 600 rigged now, Another okuma 55 will set me back 75 bucks. Thanks for reminding me about allseason, I was there yesterday loading up on stuff, now, I have to post my weekly bash on Gander.
  19. rod, You have to know you are killing me, I am itching to rig up a 300 foot #45 copper!!!!!!! Not sure if you knew but you can get the okuma 55 in high speed, 6:1 ratio. I have though about splicing anchor points on my 600 foot copper so I can put it on a board.
  20. We really had to play with speed and angle this past weekend, I hope saturday brings more cooperative fish.
  21. I wojld have liked one today when the fish were spread out from 20-140 feet down. Sure helps weed out out of temp water and helps you keep speed when the winds and currents are screwy
  22. Got out early today to horrible water conditions, swells, waves and wind all going in different directions Surface temp is like bath water, we had a hard time getting it together, I ruined a 300 foot copper to start the day. We fished SW of the Stony wall and south of it later in the day. Marked fish all over from 20 feet down to the bottom, marked more fish out deeper. We had a thermocline 85 feet down then later in the day there was something that looked like a thermocline 20 feet down and it was loaded with small fish, what I do not know, but had kings, rainbows and lakers all mixed together. We went 6 for 11. Siggs green dolphin and an aqua glow fly both behind echips, again could not buy a bite on a spin doctor, 250-300 feet of line out.. My prototype spoons and a PT Yeck both were hit on riggers, 70-100 feet down. Get this, I set a shallow Orange dispy set at 3 with a watermelon spoon and did a huge rainbow, check out the pic, the king next to it was 21 lbs. It went off again and brought up a king and the third time it fired the spoon was ripped right off. The fish were all over, would have loved to have a probe today. We had the biggest king I have seen in a long time up to the boat but it would not come up and after 30 minutes, it made a run and said bye bye. Not a bad day. It was slow starting but if the water stabilizes it should be good. Speaking of small world, we stopped for gas last night after installing a new depth finder and ran into Lady J, small world. Look forward to meeting more of you.
  23. I stopped by there on a trip to Niagra falls and was inpressed. I called them for something I saw and they mailed it right to me too. I ahve nothign but good things to say about Narbys.
  24. Started the day slow but it picked up as we went, fished west of the Stoney wall with a few hits but not much action, We moved and trolled off the SW side of the wall heading SSW, 100-130 FOW, fishing 50-95 feet down found more fish there. There was a 2 degree break and the fish were there. What would you know, the depth finder worked but did not mark fish until the last 5 minutes we were dinking with the motor. Anyhow we went 7 for 12 for a limit. 5 nice salmon to include two 20lbers and a rainbow, he was a bleeder and legal so we kept him and also threw a small jack back in. Bent hooks on flies plagued us. The Vanadium hooks are not strong enough for kings, take my word for it. Also managed to shake off a fat laker that hit flasher fly, oh, I hate those things. We had to troll faster today and got fish trolling any direction as long as it was fast. The fish had not fed for a while and what bait they had in them was smaller than last week. Spoons were slow but had good hookups on riggers and a full core: both spoons home taped on northern king blanks: yellow NBK and one I call the prototype. Siggs green dolphin and a green echip were on fire again, had hits on a hammer but nothing to to about. I can confirm the Salmon jaws are starting to get harder.
