  1. One of 2 Striped Marlin I landed that day. The other was still a little green, so we didn't dare bring her into the boat for a pic. AWESOME TRIP!

  4. He is for sure a class act. A few years back Rochester had a pro am tournament. I don't think Joe was fishing in the tournament, but he was out with clients that day. One of the amature boats that was out, called out a distress call to the Coast Guard that their boat was sinking. Captain Toomey being the guy he was pulled his lines and told the charter that he had to go help these poor guys. Captain Toomey rescued those guys and brought them in. The boat sank in more that 300 ft of water. The following year at the Red Cross tournament, Captain Toomey was recognized and given an award for saving those Pro Am contestants. Just goes along with the above story about Captain Toomey's character and professionalism on the water......
  5. Bro, I would go with the blacks. I haven't had a lot of luck with the Rohemers(SP?) we use blacks on all our riggers. As far as lures, I would use spoons on those rigs. What happens is when the rod is released from the down rigger, the cheater will slide down the line to the lure. I think if the cheater was to slide down the line and run into a dodger or a spin dr you would have some problems. If you had a fish on that cheater and the cheater line came up to a dodger, SNAP! there goes that fish. Just my opinion. My family and I have fished the Lake for over 30 years and boy has it changed. Downriggers were the only way to go. Now its a new ball game with dipseys, slider divers, Lead core, and copper line and thumper rigs. Lots of changes due to the cleaner water. Hope these tips help out.
  6. A slider diver is actually a form of dipsey diver which allows you to let out as much line (leader) from the diver to the spoon. How it works is you thread the line through the slider dipsey and then tie a barrel swivel on to the end. I then run a piece of 12 ft flourocarbon to a swivel ( the lure end). What you do is let out as much line as you want ...the line slides through the dipsey and when you reach your desired leghth ( I like 100 ft) you snap the arm on the slider diver into place. Now is when you let the diver out next to the boat. I like the #4 setting and 35 ft from the boat worked well the other day. When you buy one of these rigs just follow the directions Slider cheaters are very simple to use. I take a piece of 10 -12 ft flouro and tie a regualr swivel on one end and a basic wire clip on the other. You let out a downrigger like normal....IE 50 ft off the ball and lets just say 60 ft down. Now that the rigger is out what you do is take that leader of flouro and clip the wire clip on the downrigger rod line. You thrown the spoon over and the line will slide down your down rigger line. A down rigger rod line Bows as the line travels to the downrigger release. The free slider will travel about 1/2 way down the line and there she will stay. When a fish hits the cheater and the rod releases, you need to be fast and real in the slack before you set the hook. Ive caught a lot of fish on the slider cheaters, but ive lost a ton as well. Hope this helps......Matt French
  7. I was out there in that pack of boats. The slider divers and slider cheaters were the ticket. Also the smaller sppons were workin......Honeybees and 4D's, and High tecs.......
  8. What a beautiful day out on the lake. Big thanks to Throbbin Rod for the info.It really paid off. 12 for 15 with a nice 13 lb Steelie. All the fish came in the 30 ft and up. 3 color cores, slider divers out 35 ft, freesliders on riggers 60 and 45 down. Real hodgepodge of lures were effective. Red honeybees, and small hi tecs were productive early. As the sun came up I switched over to the deeper stuff and the watermellon NK produced as usual. Nice relaxing day and we were at the dock by 10:30. Good luck boys and look for the breaks from 47 to 44 degrees.
  9. Anyone have any reports about the Walleye bite in Chaumout and Mud bay area? Headin up there next week...
  10. 8 for 8 nice mixed bag of bows and cohos.....Anything up high ( 25 ft and slider cheaters, slide divers @ 25 ft out) RED RED RED...was the color of the day. Pulled the plug by 1000.....Nice easy morning out on the lake.....
  11. The PR is a bomber ...red with an orange belly...has black spots. It may come in regular finish, or I have some in the silver flake finish...... Great spring bait........The pink with yellow and blue spots is another oldie but goodie......Clown we call it.....
  12. Now Yankee...you know old boy is the perch master...... And what pray tell do you mean..."Weasled our way out of it..."
  13. Rich A couple of years ago me and your boy Auggie were fishing Devil's cove. As we were pulling out into the bay, The Sheriff's boat pulled up and said I was speeding. Bro we were in my 14 ft alumnacraft which has a 25 Horse on it. NO WAY THAT BOAT GOES 30 let alone 20 with our two a$$es in it. Had to laugh...... I think those guys were bored and wanted to bust my chops...If I would have gotten a ticket, I think there would have been a good defense....Ya think?
  14. Yea its the one that looks like a fish.......Got on the site the other day and they run about $85. Kind of big out west on the pacific for kings......
  15. Anybody had any experience with these rigs? Saw them on the Outdoor Channel the other day, and thought " why wouldn't this work for here?" Thanks for the input ......
  16. Holy smokes those guys really have it tough....... It sure would be cool to make a video like that on LO......
  17. Thanks boys......Those Vectors are some real mean lookin riggers. I'll have to do some browsing
  18. Anybody had any experiences (Good or Bad) with Vector riggers? They are really nice looking and are supposed to be the up in comming as far as downriggers go. I have read on other posts that they are popular with guys on Lake Michigan. Thanks for the input .....Matt
  19. Yea you aint kiddin about the Bennet Rd thing. Had that spot to myself for a while. Now I might as well be hunting right in Braddocks bay with all the other sky busters. Did pretty good on the Whistlers where I Musky fish. Man Jerry has it been that long? Boy has the fishery changed huh? Hell I remeber when Caz was out in that brown and white Penn Yann knockin the heck out of the Chickens in 100 ft. I think I have to give alot of credit to him and Orvac for all the advice he gave us in the past. Well brother, don't think we'll be in any of the Pro Ams this year, but Ive got my money on the Ole Runnin Rebel to give em hell........Good luck my man.......Matt
  20. Any of you guys go after any of the Essox Masquinongy? Heres a 2005 fish from the Niagara river. This past season was kind of tough for me. Went a couple of times. I had at one hook up on each trip, however nothing to show. The late fall bite was terrible from what I heard. Everytime I tried to make a move , the water was chocolate brown and basicaly unfishable. This year I plan a couplke of trips to the St. Larry in search for a 50 incher. Who Knows what monster might be lurking near The Iron Man.......
  21. Its sure nice to see old 870 on "THE" Lake Ontario chat site. Hey Don lots of really nice guys on here. you play your cards right and you will learn alot from some world class fisherman like Runnin Rebel. One of the toughest competetors in the ProAms. Oh By the way I'm cery serious about the cast and blast this November. Heck maybey we could do it while everyone is out Deer hunting( No more for me.....) Well sharpen up those hooks on the Radkies and Beleivers. Spool the 85 lb power pro and we'll get after them. Glad to see you checked this site out...............French
