  1. Stan you can take a dipsey. Run it on a zero setting. Let it out 80 ft or so and then clip it onto the rigger. Send that sucker down to around 110 ft and your in the ballpark........ Its one hell of a release when a fish hits..LOl...Good luck
  2. Stan, That copper stuff is going to drive you crazy bro.....Like I said I own a couple of copper set ups, but mu bread and butter rigs are the 10 color lead cores. Good luck in the tournament............Matt
  3. I have a pretty good knowledge of dipsey rods. This year I broke one of my favorite St. Croix dipsey rods (10 ft M/H) I called St. Croix and gave them the model #. The guy said "Holy cow we stopped making that rod 14 years ago." There is something to be said about the St. Croix rods. Anyway I used some 10 m/h Uglies for a while and I really didn't like them. I have since went to the Okuma 10ft M/H dipsey rods(Not the wire rods, just the plain ole dipsey rods) The action on the Okumas was pretty much the same as the St. Croixs. I like a little more limber rod on my wire set ups, and the Okumas fit the bill. I am totally satisfied with them.....
  4. Yea Jerry......We did some big numbers this year. A lot of fin clipped fish. That was nice to see. I'll be at the Oct. meeting with bells on brother......
  5. The reason that those chickens float is because their air bladders expand on the way up from the depths. I wouldn't consider myself an avid chicken chaser, but on occasion, I'll drop the bells and nuts to the bottom in 100. When I release them, I gently squeeze the fish's stomach and you can hear the fish burping. I then hold the fish by the tail and place him overboard. When I feel the fish kicking his tail, I shove him straight down in the water and 99% of the time the fish swims on his own back to the deep. I seldom get floaters. The key is getting that air bladder deflated....Hope this helps......Matt
  6. Rick...I can catch kings too.....Just like catching those brown spotted beauties.......
  7. I went from a 19 Thompson I/o to a 31 twin screw Baha....I had some fast learning to do. After you get the hang of it, it is extemely easy to control when docking.
  8. One of the many outstanding Irondequoit Bay anglers
  9. Moto the 2nd place guys were not there.......You might have to keep calling or emailing to find out what the deal is.
  10. Blue....Thats what happens. Especially this time of year when guys are fishing close to shore. Come to Rochester and you'll witness some combat trolling at its finest. It sucks that it happened to you. Some people have no sense of responsibility. There is a guy in Roch that has cut me off(I had a fish on both times), forced me into shallow water..." Sorry just trying to get to my waypoint." a real for himself kind of guy....I know how he is now, and I avoid him whenever possible. Just today I had a smaller boat cut right behind me. I anticipated his move and brought in my 10 color before he cut me off. ....I feel your pain.
  11. Steve....I used Ira Jones this year....He is the man!
  12. Absolutely Skeiner...... I'll have a new bunch for next year. Going to order 8 new ones for next year and retire my Great Lakes systems..... They were awesome rods and I'd hate to bust one of them since they don't make them anymore. I busted one of my St. Croix dipsey rods. I called them up with the model # and the guys said they hadn't made that rod in 14 years.....he was right, thats how long I had my St. Croix's.
  13. I took the class with ScottB and he was exactly right...poor organization. I was on top of my license and "cut a couple of corners" to save time, but I didn't even get my License till the first week of July. Are you kidding me? As far as the class......Good Luck! Its pretty tough....I think I failed every practice test we had before the final. Oh yea did I mention math? You better get your algebra on! The Rules of the road is the most important. Study that because you can only miss 3 out of the 30 questions in this section. The chart plotting is tough too. They will tell you that you won't be ready for the exam till the night before. They are exactly right. Oh yea the two guys who teach the Rochester class are total Sailboaters. In our class, Legacy , me, and ScottB sat in the back of class saying " Screw the jibs and tacking...can I just run some downriggers and dipseys?"
  14. Moto thats the same fish......If you hold a stout fish like I did in the first pic, it really shows off the belly. Up and down tends to make it look longer....The first pic is after the fish sat in a cooler for 4 hours
  15. This could be HUGE...Rochester...Huuuugggge!
  16. Just bought some rigger and dipsey rods and I can say I was pleasantly suprised. The rigger rods have a lot of play in them and you can really get them doubled over on a downrigger, yet they have the backbone to handle big fish. The dipsey(Not the wire made ones with the roller guide) are awesome. Reminds me of the old St. Croix rods I used to use for wire. The 10ft m/h action is sweet. I heated and removed the tip and put on a twilly....all set......Ive always been a Diawa man...Heartlands and 47LC's , but these rods are impressing me more and more......
  17. Thats would be great Steve.....A nice winter project for us. I'm sure some of the Local merchants in Charlotte/ the Bay and around Sandy would be interested as well. Longline...I share some of your frustrations. I have fished EVERY Eslo/Loc tournament. The thing you need to realize is WE are the ones who need to promote the sport. No-one else will. I think that the start of an "easy going just a bunch of fishermen and no pressure" contest would do the ports well. Not to mention the the pen rearing projects. We all know what the city and county have as far as "interests". That being said, lets leave the negative publicity about Rochester in our path and strive for our goal....Better fishing and a better class of fish being caught.
  18. All right fellas....I"ll try to work on something for next year. Since Rochester does not have a pro am, I am Leaning more towards the $100 a boat tournament. Its nice to see people from the Rochester area interested. The things we need to think about is prize structure, percentage to go to Sandy Creek and Rochester pen rearing. Weigh station location. Could be interesting..... After this season Is over I'll get the ball rolling.
  19. You know Brian....we should get one rep from each port to get together this winter to nail down the specifics...Ive never seen so may boats like I did yesterday. I fished with ScottB out of your port and saw just as many......I think we may be on to something...lets see how this irons out and maybe we could set it up for next year.......
  20. I can't remember the last time I saw as many fishing derbies. I think it says something about the fishery and the class of fishermen we have on the lake. That being said ....What about a Rochester tournament? Years ago there was a Rochester Pro-Am and it kind of fizzled out due to lack of interest. The past few weeks Ive seen a ton of boats fishing the Rochester area. Could it be possible that we start a tournament here? Even if it would be the biggest three fish , $100 a boat deal that the other ports have. Lets say 90% cash return with the remaining money to go for the pen-rearing project. I think that Rochester is kind of the "Dark Horse" of ports on the Lake. It offers a diverse opportunity for all species. How about a little input from you Rochester/Irondequoit/ and Sandy guys. Its kind of late to do it this year. The Derbies seem to be a big success in other ports, my question is why not Rochester? Thanks for the input guys............
  21. In Mud Bay...Located about 15 minutes from Cape Vincent
  22. Ive learned a long time ago... If something can go wrong...it will.....Lol..Thanks for the comments
