  1. Sponge , Ive had that happen to me a bunch of times. Especially in the spring when the kings are at their best as far as fighting. Now real big kings will do the same. The two biggest kings I have to date ( 40# summer Hen and 37# Fall male) both made fast runs to the boat and then dove for the bottom. Those fish stayed straight under the boat and I really had to horse them up. 99% of the time big browns will hit, make a solid but short run, and then take off out to one side of the boat. Ive never had a brown charge the boat. Lakers...well you probably know what they are all about. Coho's and Steelies are both aerial artsits. My money would be on a king. By the way We did the off shore thing on Saturday and It was well worth the trip. We had one major (probably 25lbs) with a 23 inch lamprey on him. We also did a bunch of 3 yr old kings and some nice steelies to boot.
  2. Ive fished for 30 yrs in the waters from Oak Orchard to Sodus. Ive only heard of one guy who has grabbed a Nice Lunge all these years. I'm pretty sure Captain Jerry of Rebel took a nice one while fishing out of Fairhaven in a Pro am. I do all my Musky fishing in the Upper Niagara, Erie near the Harbor mouth, and Chatauqua (SP) Lake. Now walleyes are a different story....................
  3. Pull on the Flack jackets, man the depth charges........" Heres to swimin with bow legged women chief."
  4. Lakers are like the Rodney Dangerfield of trout. No respect. Years ago we used to fish for them. We had some good times pulling 20-30 fish days. And we did have some hogs in the 20# class. It seems like the laker population has taken a dive. If you want to catch them, just go out to around 100ft(maybe a little deeper) and look for the long lazy hooks on the bottom. Drop down the bells all the way to the bottom. One the ball hits the bottom, crank up the ball so it barely bounces. And its that easy. Could turn a bad day into a good day....Fellas just make sure to revive the fish before sending them back. Burp the air bladder and the fish will swim right down. If not, the fish will stay on the surface and be lunch for the flying rats........Good luck Matt
  5. Man you hit a big nerve with that one. I absolutely hate guys who run their planer boards way out while fishing up by the piers. Almost makes we want to tape a fillet knife to my boat hook and go to work! What Ive found that works just as well are walleye boards, or yellow birds. My typical "combat trip" strats well before light with 4 downriggers and maybey 2 top lines (Not on boards/birds). Once it gets light enough to see, then I might bring in two of the riggers and put out two birds/boards on each side. I've found it to be easier to real the birds in closer to the boat when other boats get close. I also run the birds because it really gets the kings mad when the bird comes down and smacks them in the puss......LOL......Good luck
  6. Nice day on the lake. We started around 0530 hrs at our usual haunt. Tried in close and we ripped a couple of decent Browns with a bonus teenager King. We moved out slightly deeper and started in on the 3 and 4 yr olds. Fish were hitting just about everything. The one consistent rig that went was a new spin Dr I bought last night. I was chrome with a yellow & Chrome ladder back Spin Dr. with a Mirage Atomik fly. Looks similar to an NBK spoon. Anyway were were something like 12 for 15. Spoons were NBK, Laser spooks, and a sppon similar to a Habanero. We managed to kill two Giant Lampreys. The temperature was all over the place and the current really screwed with the lure speed. Thank god for the Fish Hawk. Good luck.............Matt French
  7. On our boat, I jump out on the swim platform and hold them by the tail and make sure they have water flowing through their gills. When I feel the fish start to kick, I shove him as deep as I can. Usually the little help I give him is enough to jump start his engine. Doing this in 3 fters is kinda interesting....LOL
  8. Depends on the season......In the spring I run 17 lb with a 14 # fluoro leader.... Now when the fleas are thick (like right now) I spool up with 30# Ande. Now I have heard about Cortland's Flea Flicker line, but I haven't personally tried it.......Good luck
  9. Been doing it for years....Ive personally Kept 2 kings for the wall in the past 10 years. The rest have gone back except derby fish. Spent many a day out on the swim platform reviving fish for the send back. To date the only fish Ive Kept that were not in the derby were a37# Fall male and a 40# summer hen king......Both made sweet mounts. Now if you talk walleye and perch.....Fill your limits and I'll start the fryers
  10. Big Johns are great. Check out the Vector rod holders.....Man they are sweet looking.
  11. 2nd 3rd and 4th lakes........Casting and trolling. Trolling seemed to be better
  12. Back from the trip......No tigers, but we did manage a few Northerns. Biggest was 37 inches about 11 lbs. Nice northern. It was released to fight another day. Now its back to business....... Spoons and Spin Dr.'s
  13. Holy up welling! All the cold water came up to around 40-50ft. Made for nice fishing today BUT the kings that we marked seemed to have lock jaw. We ended the day 6 for 7. All real nice healthy mature kings. Good set up today was a lemon ice stinger 49down. Mags off the dipseys 110 to 130 on a 2 1/2 set. We were only out till about 0930 and we had to come in for prior obligations. Any of you guys notice lampreys on the fish you catch? Ive killed 4 in the last 2 trips. I hope the DEC gets on the ball with spraying the streams again. Anyway we'll be back at it on Saturday weather providing. Tight lines.........Matt
  14. On the way up to Eagle Bay for a few days with the family. A friend of mine is already up there and called me in a panic today. He told me that all the landlocked Salmon are gone and that muskies have taken over the Lakes ( First, Second, Third and Fourth lakes). He told me that he was throwing a big top water muskie bait and had a huge blow up. No hook up, but that was enough to convince me to pack my St. Croix rods and my Musky Boxes..............So much for the family vacation. The fishing addiction strikes again!
  15. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME Wow we had a banner day. 18 for 24 an at the dock at 11:30. The fishing was good, but we had to really work at them. The temperature break was down around 90-95 ft. Early on we had the wires go with frog stingers. Both mags and regulars. As the day wore on with little wire action, we put out the big Dipseys set on a #2.The rigs were put out 255ft and it was on! The down riggers took fish 93 and 99 down using NBKs. The consistent producer was the straboard dipsey set at 255 out with an NBK. Overall we had 11 kings (6 majors, 3 teenagers , 2 skippers) 6 Browns up to 11 lbs, and one chicken (LT). All the fish were C&R. On another note I killed three lampreys today. One of the bigger kings had 2 on him.
  16. I'll be out on Saturday morning, come you know what or high water.......
  17. Could be tough with this front we have coming through. Right before the fron, the fish moved out to 300-400 fow. Thats a long way to go! The main thing that I do is go out until I find the desired temp at an acceptable depth. I think having 50 deg down 60 to 70 is about perfect for summer kings. I just hate having my riggers down 90-100 ft. Anyway, as far as mag spoons.....28 sizes probably out fish the mags this time of the year. I just started running that muped rig and it paid off. Will give her another rty on Sat depending on the forecast.......
  18. Should have know what kind of day it was going to be when a D@#% black cat ran out in front of me on the way to the dock. Started out in our usual spot with the same cast of characters on the ends of our rods. Managed a few decent Browns, but no where near what we had earlier in the week. The Bait and the fish had vacated the area.. Ran out a little deeper and started to poke some teenage kings. 140 on the wire with a #3 setting. Spoons that were good were the new hollogram NK 28. Decided to run a mupped rig off the lowest rigger. Put out the 28 and Mag wonder bread. Smoked a couple of more teenagers on that one( the 28 went). All of a sudden the lower mup rig goes again, but this time the fish runs right to the surface and never stopped. Now Ive fished for 30 yrs on this lake and that Rainbow was the biggest Ive seen. In true fashion the steelie jumps and twists, and then the GD line breaks on the cheater.......What a monster......Well he's out there boys. With a Magnum wonder bread in his jaws. Ended the day 12 for 14...Not bad, but I'd give all those fish up just to have landed that one.........GOD I HATE BLACK CATS!
  19. Ive been marking a ton of bait recently. Clouds and clouds of bottom to top bait. That probably has somthing to do with it to. The other day I managed a laker and when I burped it for the throw back, it puked up 2 monster gobies. I normally hate catching chickens, but if they are going to chow down on some gobies......They may have just stepped up a notch in my book. Right above a sheeper..... :lol Thanks Dan.... was a lucky grab. Tough to compete with the eastern end Brown fishery......
  20. Yea he was a little stout.......Brian, He grabbed a frog NK 28
  21. Steve we had three screamers on our dipsey rigs on Sat. All on Atomiks. We had a case of the drops. 3 rippers on the dipseys, and one on the rigger........Fish 4 , Missdemeanor zip. I hate that. We did manage a smaller teen king and a chicken on the copper. Possibly get after em on the 4th
  22. One of 2 Striped Marlin I landed that day. The other was still a little green, so we didn't dare bring her into the boat for a pic. AWESOME TRIP!
  23. Bull Dorado almost 70 lbs.....What a fight!
