  1. What kind of rod was it?
  2. Their reply would be " we don't want to mess with trout lakes" just like all the rest of the lakes in this state. Trout is the #1 priority for them even though I bet most guys would rather have eyes. I approached them once and that is basically what they said. (DEC)
  3. MY research is based on results of the annual Genesee Beer Fishing Contest. I have all the fishing guides from 1946 (1st year) till the contest ended in 1992. Walleyes from Hemlock and Canandaigua frequently were in the top 3 in the 50s and early 60s. My conversations with the DEC showed that their demise started with the arrival of the sawbellies. Sawbellies ate too many of the fry. Sad neither of those lakes is a shadow of its prior self, that is why catch and release is so important. If anyone gets any straglers, they should be released to give mother nature one more shot since stocking doesnt appear to be an option.
  4. If guys would of released a few of the giant eyes there, maybe they would of reproduced and we wouldnt have to worry about the DEC restocking it. What is there not to get about releasing any big female eye over say 7 lbs?? Duh, no release no reproduction..... Yes in the 50s, 60s there were huge eyes there till the sawbellies arrived, same with Canandaigua L.
  5. So my question is how long do the toxins remain???
  6. I was at Black Lake last week and it looked like pea soup literally and they were advertising to be careful cause the toxic blue green algae was present. The fishing was horrible besides. I am not sure if the cold will make the toxic stuff disappear. I think I read something where it might remain for awhile.
  7. As far as I know theres been a small but steady stream of eyes at the oak in recent years. The only ones targeting them there are at night and around the piers. There could be others on them that arent talking too. Same lake as BQ and the Niagara so theres bound to be a few wanderers. Wish we had a steady supply of them though, seems like were in no mans land. If you get one at the Genny, what are you going to do with it, watch it glow?
  8. It will be a cold day before I use 40 lb mono test for salmon. You may get fish but where the sport? 40 lb for musky yes, trout no. Whatever wets your whistle.
  9. thanks for the update
  10. leader to fly wouldnt matter as much cause its spinning and the flasher drives em mad. 40 lb mainline would suck for hits and knots.
  11. I have a hard time believing 40 lb line wouldnt lessen your hits. I guess if they are feeding in low light it might not matter as much but on clear, sunny, calm days its got to maker a negative difference. Ive got too many years on the water to tell me otherwise. Hey whatever works for you, go for it.
  12. Ive never had a flea on the 20 lb. FF either, thats why I want it.
  13. I found it online and ordered it but by the time I paid shipping it was 17 bucks a spool. Sh*&t! I hear mixed reports about wether 30 lb big game works for fleas and if the # of hits decreases. My instincts say it would but I dont dispute anything anyone claims.
  14. I was told by Sharon at Narbys (Oak O) that Cortland may be out of business and that Flea Flicker line is no longer available. Shoot, now what?? That stuff works pretty well. I was told to try straight big game 20-30 lb but wont that get fleas and less hits too? Why doesnt anyone else make this?
  15. What is the most popular radio channel or channels for Oak Orchard? I was there last week and tried 7 and 72 and heard nothing even though there were 25 boats out. Or maybe guys dont talk anymore??? Thanks
  16. Sluggo, I was told by a tackle shop owner that Cortland is no longer selling the Flea Flicker line. Im not sure if that is true but it does work perfectly (20 lb.) for me out in Lake O but not sure what I'll do to buy more since I need more. The 30 lb seems too heavy anyways to get any hits doesnt it? Nice eye and thanks for trying to release it Kevin. BP
  17. OK thanks much. Is that on Indian land and any special permits?
  18. Where exactly is the cattauragus Creek launch? Are there any other launches on the eastern end other than Erie Basin, SBH, and Sturgeon Pt.?
  19. Landshark....you're the man!! Awesome and released too so there are more for future generations. You see that Bosco, hes the definition of a true sportsman.
  20. Im the one who started this post so now I'm going to give my opinion. I feel anybody who keeps a big breeder female Walleye that big is only being selfish. They are cheating the fishery as a whole by not allowing those big breeders to spawn or to reproduce again if they are spawned out. They are in the process cheating other fisherman who may at some point not catch any walleyes that they may have caught had the big breeders been released. Since the state does not care about Walleye stockings in most places (see trout & Salmon stockings) like they should, it is up to the conservation minded fishermen to take it upon themselves to do the right thing. Anybody who wants to eat a 12 lb Walleye needs to know that the 3-4 lbers taste a whole lot better. As far as being within the legal limits cause you paid $29 bucks for a license, thats BS. Does the DEC get everything right? hardly. Seriously....Do the right thing. It's one thing for a weekend guy to keep a once in a lifetime fish and something else when a charter guy does it on a continual basis. What is there not to understand about the importance of catch and release? Its 2012 remember?
  21. Forget about livebait too much hassle and too slow a search process. Try spinnerbaits, suspending stickbaits and spoons. If Pike are in the mood, they will hit but you may need to experiment with speed, color and size. Calm days are tough as Pike Love wind. Usually they hit better around 8-11 AM and then 4-7 PM. I have found that real early is not as good as 8-11 AM range. Try the skinniest invisible metal leaders you can find and dont forget to release the big gals.
  22. One of the best known charter guys on Henderson preaches releasing the big female walleyes and keeping the smaller ones to eat and I totally agree with him in theory yet time after time in various publications he has "hero" shots at the dock of huge walleye he and his customers have kept. Some 12-13 lbs.ish. If they want a mount, reproduction mounts look just as good or better as the skin mounts. What would you do if you got a huge one or have already got a huge female walleye in eastern Lake Ontario ?
  23. No I was talking about a regular cheater line using a downrigger. So I should only use the 1 giant swivel on the SD?
  24. Can someone tell me if there is supposed to be 2 huge swivels or 1 on a Spin Doctor? I know there is 1 in the front where it connects to the line but Im not sure about the back. Also what is the ideal length of a cheater line? Thanks much. BP
  25. Anybody know the results of the duck hunters perch derby on Seneca?
