  1. Well, this was sort of cool to catch. The size is typical for this time of year 37" but what made this fish special is I was Smallmouth fishing out at the Niagara Bar in front of the fort and just started to troll a small rapala diver in 15 feet and Whack!! I was using a light bass spinning rod and 6 lb test . Wow you talk about a fight, once it got in the current it was tougher. It decided to go out more in the lake and I had to follow with the boat so I didnt get spooled. This went on for over 30 minutes (im not sure how long exactly), finally after playing it out, my buddy netted it. A memorable fight for sure on 6 lb test. It was 37.5 ". Anyone know how much a 37.5" salmon weighs? I didnt have a scale. Later in the day near the green can in 26 feet I get another on the same setup only this one jumped 3 feet in the air and broke the line with his tail flap on the way down. Got some nice bass too. fun day. BP [/img]
  2. I dont expect alot of responses on this one but has anyone caught or hooked a Musky in Lake O in the Rochester to Oak Orchard area?????? Any straglers??? BP
  3. I havent but every spring they get em in the spring trout derby. Last spring I think there were a few 9 lbers caught at the oak. Years ago in the 50's they used to get some 12-13 lb slobs there but not lately that Im aware of. Too bad they dont stock walleyes to get em going. A few good hatches would go along way. Anything they get is problably stragglers from the Niagara. I did hear of a few caught from the pier about a month ago but only heresay. Good luck. BP
  4. Lava, Never tried it in the fall but if you have a jig down there, you can get ANYTHING that swims. You can launch at Ft. Niagara lauch right at mouth of river or Lewiston. Let us know how you make out. BP
  5. Definitely worth a try. One of the highlights of my year is to jig big 10-15 lb lakers at the Niagara Bar every spring on medium spinning tackle. It doesnt get any better. Those laker dig hard and fight unbelieveably well on 10 lb test and medium action rods plus the current helps them too. We have caught spring salmon also doing that. Big hair jigs, tube jigs, fin s fish, big twisters, etc. Id like to try this myself for fall salmon, I dont know any fish alive that wont hit a jig. Good luck. BP
  6. Good news Yankee Thanks. As far as the upwelling, I heard that 2 yrs ago they found lots of floating dead ones but thats nothing new, Im sure the lake has been upwelling since its inception. Although I never heard that happening in the last 10-15 yrs to that extent. Now if only we could get Wautoma to come back to life. Its like a barren sea for bass west of braddocks compared to eastern Lake O. BP
  7. Anyone have any bass reports from the bridges area lately at the oak? Dont hear much about that place except t/s in the lake. Thanks BP
  8. Dont spin your wheels in the Oswego for skis. Never heard of one from there. Try the St. Lawrence but that fishery is in trouble now with the vhs, numbers are way down. Good luck (we dont have enough musky waters here)
  9. too bad about hedges. Does anyone know if the smally fishing at sodus in front of the bluffs has been sucking too? I remember going there about 5 years ago and getting 100+ bass on several occasions but the last few years have been no where near as good. Anyone have a report from this year? I havent been there yet. Thanks BP
  10. Coming from the bass, pike, musky and walleye world I know the east wind is the kiss of death. Im wondering how east wind affect the trout/salmon fishing out on the lake O. I see guys trying all the time but not sure if it matters as much for t/s as it does for bass. Does the old saying hold true "fish bite the least when the winds from the east" ???? (on Lake O for t/s) BP
  11. 25-100' is fine and dandy but are you using Fluro? Most fluro leader spools are 75 feet or are you just using a big spool of regular fluro or just regular mono ? BP
  12. What is a good trolling speed (gps) for Browns this time of year? Thanks BP
  13. How long should a flourocarbon leader be on leadcore for trout /salmon? Thanks BP
  14. is an apex a curved plastic spoon?
  15. No I dont think it is a pro troll flasher. I heard them talking about it at the oak and I think its a stickbait they run off the lead core but im not sure. BP
  16. I was at both Narbys and Captains cove yesterday and I must admit I was impressed with both. They both had a very nice selection. My wallets a little lighter now though. BP
  17. Can anyone tell me what this is? Spoon or stickbait or other?
  18. Are there any tackle shops that have a decent assortment of trout /salmon spoons OTHER than Gander, Dicks or Narbys? There doesnt seem to be much selection out there (I havent been to Narbys yet). Is it mail order city? BP
  19. What is the general opinion on late afternoon- evening (after dinner) fishing? It is one of my favorite times to fish for Bass, etc but Im not sure its that good for trout/salmon. Am I wrong on this one. I have had better luck in the AM than evening but it would seem there should still be a feeding period during the PM. Anybody had any good outings lately in the PM? Thanks BP
  20. I tried the screw method for now. Will see how that works. Looks like it will work. I can always fall back on my double clamp downeasters if need be also. They are pretty solid and worked good the other day. BP
  21. Yikes!!! Maybe thats why Berkley is changing the name next year to Trilene Flourocarbon (new formula hopefully) I must say I have used 2 lb and 4 lb for perch and smallys without too many problems but I do remember it breaking a few times. Ill take your word on the heavy stuff. I wonder how Cabelas Flouro works???
  22. If you are not running a downrigger, can you run 2 dipseys off 1 side without a total tangle? What would work maybe 1 straight back on 0 and 1 on 3?? Has anybody tried this. ?? Thanks BP
  23. I had problems with my Scottys yesterday and dipsey rods. They kept popping out of the holder on 2 different rod holders. I fixed that problem by putting a screw through the whole thing so it cant come off unless I release the wing nut. Check my other post on this, it apparently has been a problem with Scottys.
  24. Was thinking of using a Berkley Vanish 20 lb leader. Anyone use this or what do you like? I was wondering if this sucks mostly. BP
