  1. c star, whats the difference between copper and ss wire? Im working on putting together a wire rig. Nobody makes a left hand line counter big enough for 10 colors and 250 yards of backing so a lead core might be out. Thanks BP
  2. So basically you need an ocean size reel to hold 10 colors and 250 yards of backing. My Penn 321 is no where near big enough. Some of the reels mentioned in previous posts are gigantic. Thats a tough pill to swallow for a ultra light specialist like myself. I may ditch the whole lead core idea. Thanks for your replys. BP
  3. Gambler or anyone else who uses leadcore, What reel are you getting 10 colors on with 40 lb powerpro backing? I just tried to get 300 feet of 65 lb powerpro( 16 lb diameter I use for muskies ) and I could only get 4 colors on. Back to the drawing board. Im trying to put it on a Penn321. This is starting to tick me off, I cant seem to get it right. How much backing is necessary with 10 colors? Am I out of whack thinking I need 300 feet of backing? That would be 600 feet total. Thanks BP
  4. What is a good length rod for using wire? Is it ok to just change the tip to a twilli or is a roller rod better? Thanks BP
  5. How long a leader (flourocarbon I assume?) are you running off the wire? Also how long off lead core too? Thanks BP
  6. Are trout/Salmon affected by cold fronts as much as Bass/walleye/musky, and other warm water species? Its well documented how bass, etc are negatively affected. Im wondering what affect it has on trout/salmon that are down 70 feet deep or deeper. ??????? Thanks BP
  7. You are right about the deeper water in a little closer at the oak than Sandy. I experienced both in the last week and 100 feet was definitely closer at the oak than Sandy.
  8. Was at Gander last night and the only brand wire line they had was Optitackle in brown camo color. Anyone here use this stuff? They dont sell the Malin. Also what is the difference between wire line and copper line? Thanks guys for your help on this. BP
  9. The only problem I have is I need a left handed line counter and Okuma and Cabelas are the only game in town. Daiwa or Shimano does not make them.
  10. Does a reel for wire have to have a metal spool or will a graphite spool be ok??????. Im planning on using a left handed line counter by Okuma but it has a graphite spool. I wish the tekota was left handed. Only 2 lefty line counters to choose from. shoot. BP (The Okuma convector is very nice though) Anyone here used a Okuma Magna? (in general not just wire?) Thanks BP
  11. Gambler you are totally right. Was out this morn at Sandy and fleas were a huge problem. Only 1 26" Steelhead to speak of. I will look into a wire rig. What do you reccomend? Thanks BP
  12. How long a leader is a good length for leadcore on Lake O for trout/salmon. I was gonna use a 20 lb flouro leader but not sure how long.???????? Also what lb. leadcore is good for Salmon/trout????Thanks BP
  13. Thanks Bill, I wasnt thinking at the end of the core but the beginning. dah. What lb test leadcore is good for trout/salmon on Lake O. ? I have an 18 lb setup for walleye but that might be too light no???? BP
  14. I see guys are trolling Dipseys with 150-200 feet out and see thats way off the chart Luhr Jensen recommends. How deep would this go using powerpro 65 lb test/ 16 lb diameter? (on my musky rod) Is this on the 0 setting (straight back) or off to the side? or is this using the smaller size 0 dipsey? Thanks in advance. BP
  15. What does this phrase mean when using leadcore ?
  16. How fast were you guys trolling on the gps? Thanks Also what does "Leadcore knot at the water" mean? BP
  17. Smallys in the Rochester area has always sucked relatively speaking. Most of the rocks are at points east (sodus, hedges, etc.) and points west (niagara). There is Wautoma shoals and oddball spots off braddocks but I dont think this area can hold a candle to the other areas. Its always been like that. Has anybody tried Sodus lately? It used to be great up till about 2 years ago when there was a huge fish kill they said was caused by a massive turn over. Havent heard much lately. BP
  18. Honeoye at night is your best chance, Its been tough lately and now another cold front. yikes. BP
  19. speaking of buckets.... My son goes to school in Arizona and called me the other day telling me while he was fishing there was a guy using a snag hook to snag 2 giant 7 and 9 lb Largemouth off the beds and he had them in a bucket. He convinced the jerk to let 1 go but he was keeping the other. My son flagged a cop down as he was leaving and told the cop. Hopefully he did something. Jerks where ever you go....
  20. Ive seen it first hand from a pond near spencerport. Years ago before catch and release we kept a few slobs over 6 lbs from a small farm pond and the pond went downhill from there. It was never the same. These ponds are very fickle and you can disrupt the whole ecosystem by keeping a few big breeders. My advise is to release them all, go get your meal at a restaurant. These fish have problably not reached their potential yet and anyways as they were stocked not too long ago. The season is also currently closed as well.
  21. Good luck on your trip but please note MUSKIE season is closed till the 3rd Sat in June (16th).
  22. Anyone have any walleye reports for the Genesee, Oak Orchard or Lower Niagara? Even accidental catches?
  23. Fisherie.com is mostly PA reports of L. Erie. It has almost nothing of eastern lake Erie. There must be something even close to this board here qualitywise.
  24. Ive often wondered myself. I cant believe nobody knows. How are we suppose to follow the law if we dont know it? I dont drink while boating anyways but it would be nice to know for buddies on board.
  25. Does anybody know of a good Lake Erie Smallmouth/walleye forum as good as this one?? Thanks Ive been checking but cant seem to find a good one.
