  1. I've been using this site to get live looks at the actual weather/conditions at the lakes and keep track of the ice melts. the Waneta site is great because it also gives weather data too. http://www.fingerlakes1.com/webcams.php
  2. my pleasure guys. great value reels, save for that one major inadequacy, IMHO. cant wait to try them out pullin the 10" cranks and see how they work. gonna have to trek to the Allegheny Res soon- I just cant wait until june...
  3. I posted the instructions and ordering info in the 'tackle tips and techniques' forum. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9596 BTW- they have drag upgrades for a lot of other reels as well.
  4. There was some interest in the procedure for upgrading the drag on the daiwa accudepth plus reels, so I thought I'd post it as a separate thread. Its fairly simple, I did it with no instructions and was able to figure it out with no major issues, but I will try to save you the hassle of figuring it out as you go. pretty simple- you only need to take one end off the reel; took me a 1/2 hour (including head-scratching time figuring it out ) The various drag upgrades for this reel (and most others) can be purchased here (~$10): http://www.smoothdrag.com which also has some generic info on the various drags and installation. I was told both types offered will be smoother than the felt. carbontex drags will have a higher lb rating and smoother progression vs stock whereas the smoothies will have comparable lb to stock but the smoothest overall in usage and progression. The drag kits for sealines and accudepths are the same. OK and now for the instructions... use the schematics that come with the reel if you have them as they are clearer than the image on the daiwa website and refer to this if you're not clear on the parts I reference: http://www.daiwa.com/PartsDiagram/Parts ... C-47LC.pdf 1) start by turning the reel on end with the handle facing up. take out the small screw in the handle and lift off the nut keeper. loosen and remove the nut and lift off the handle. the metal spacing sleeve will probably come out with it. thats fine. lift off the drag star 2) remove 7 the screws that hold the end plate onto the reel (4 large 3 small) including the small ones up by the counter. NOTE- do NOT remove the screw in the clutch lever as this will remain on the end plate 3) squeezing the two end plates, screw off the cast control cap and set aside it along with the spring underneath it. be sure not to let go of the two end plates 4) again standing it on end with the handle side up, slowly lift off the end plate. 5) one by one, begin removing the various washers and parts off the drive shaft; the small washers first and then the large gear along with all the pieces inside it (these can can come off as a unit). keep track of the order in which you take them off. once you remove the anti-reverse clutch wheel, everything should now be off the shaft. (the small spring attached to the anti-reverse pawl will at some point come loose from the pawl, this is fine) 6) clean the grease from on and around the shaft and clutch wheel and lightly grease (always just enough to leave a fingerprint) and reinstall the clutch wheel with the 'nub' side facing down. 7) take the next part in line (the red washer) and discard. this will be replaced by the small washer in the drag kit. NOTE- as you're replacing the drag washers, apply a light coat of reel-and-drag grease (again, just enough to leave a fingerprint) 8 ) take the washers out of the the drive gear and clean out the inside where the drag washers fit inside and reinstall with light grease on both sides 9) clean and reinstall the drag washers in order with light grease, swapping out the new ones in place of the crappy felt ones. Be careful with the carbontex ones when applying grease, so that the fibers around the edge remain flat- spread grease towards the edges, not along them. 10) reinstall the brass washers/bushings: brass washer 1st -> bushing and sleeve (wide brass side down) -> brass washer. save the 2 curved metal washers for later 11) holding pressure downward on the layers of components you just installed, take the small pawl spring off the post and reinstall it: on the pawl first, then post-side. NOTE- be sure the pawl rides against the edge of the clutch wheel, not under it. 12) slide the yoke plate so that its in the position furthest from the shaft. 13) reinstall the side plate (this is the only even slightly tricky part). it should sit flush, but if not move the clutch level back and forth while applying pressure to the end plate, so that it engages the yolk plate. you may have to jiggle the spool and press the lc reset button as well (It took me one or two tries to get everything to line up and have the plate flush against the reel body) 14) install the 7 end cap screws and then cast control cap. 15) install the drag and handle components- the two drag spring washers should be in a () configuration. 16) snug up the handle nut, slide the retaining ring over it, screw it in place and you're done! Happy tinkering!
  5. LOL- I said to myself as I was replacing them that I should be taking pictures. guess so. Ok. let me take and import a picture of the part diagram and I can reference the key #s int he instructions- that will make it pretty easy for some one to follow.
  6. snyder - I also have the accudepth 47LCs, which have worked well for me on dipseys and are an awesome price, but I was rather dissapointed in the drag which I think is the only real failing of this reel compared with the sealines. in a hair's width it goes from slipping to too tight-the progression is just horrible. just this week I got around to upgrading the drag to carbontex and I'll tell you from playing around with it looks to have the progression its advertised to. there are also the extreme smoothies, but carbontex has a higher lb drag resistance which is what I wanted since I also drag large cranks (note my sceen name ); but both the smoothies and carbontex have a great progression (and smoothies even more so). $10 a kit and easy to do. If anyone's interested I can post step-by-step.
  7. thats awesome, sounds like a blast! hit any muskie?
  8. What a jackass! I'd love to hold that F'in guy underwater for as long as he held that fish up for the camera and see how he likes it! And he didn't show how long it took him to unhook it before he started rolling film. Sad that an amazing fish like that was most certainly floating belly up shortly after he released it, IF he was even able to revive it. I hope REAL muskie fisherman that know him see this vid and pop him right in the face.
  9. I use the navionics hotmaps 08. it has canandaigua, cayuga skaneateles and seneca (among other NY) in HD dont know how i ever lived without it
  10. I agree with Legacy. Sept/Oct offers the best combo of size and odds for open water action- I saw little action over the summer but couldn't keep em off the line there this past fall. Bulking up for winter puts them on the prowl and biting, and by Oct, they're well bulked up. The water temp is a bit higher in the fall than spring, so they're more active too and liable to chase a bait. Later spring- once the H2O warms into the 50s should be good too, but once the water gets warm around midsummer, the bigguns go deep to find cooler temps and are harder to get at. good luck - see you out there. I'm in a white/Tan Nitro Fish/Ski.
  11. We get a near record high temp and not a peep on the board...60 degrees in early spring and the launches would be jammed and the board buzzin... where are the diehards??? Guess I can't say much, just by coincidence, today was the day I had scheduled to get the boat wrapped finally. I had given up hope for 1 last day... March is only a couple months away...
  12. The board's been pretty quiet for new reports the past week or two. Anyone out there lately braving the elements (besides Landshark with his slob walleyes ) and have a report to share? Am going to try what looks to be my last toothy troll tomorrow on Conesus, (too cold to cast) before wrapping her up for a couple months. curious to know what the water temps are looking like there or similar waters? Pretty sad that I'm looking forward to getting out tomorrow simply because its above freezing but we take what we can get this time of year.
  13. appears only the squeaky wheel gets the grease here... (i'd wink but haven't figured THAT out on the mobile version yet!) lol [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  14. yep, it sets up perfectly: fills the screen! [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  15. hey Chad I'm logged in on the mobile (as usual). This is killer! Lovin the mobile app. Seems to work really well: formats perfectly and pics resize nicely too. looking forward to sqandering even more of my workdays now! [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  16. hey Chad great site! The one thing that you might want to look into is optimizing it for mobile web browsers too. I use my WinMobile phone a lot and while some of the 'other' sites set up well when selecting the fit-to-screen option, the topic lists on LOU are impossible to read (compressed horizontally down to nil) and you have to switch between desktop view in topics list and then back to 'Fit' within the topic, or else constantly scroll sideways when reading. in either view the topic column gets cut off though...
  17. hey Shane- you did better than I, by a few hours and a couple of silver bass by my reconing! I Almost made it out Sunday AM with the wife. when the weather turned out so good on Sunday AM I hitched the boat up and threw in the gear, but right when my daughter headed out for the day with her aunt, the front hit and it turned nasty. wife nixed that one...guess she's not hardcore I'd go myself, but not too sure about launching alone without the docks. any way to load/unload by rope or does someone have to stay in the boat and motor on/off? thought it looked sort of tough with an 18ft-er. definitely up for sneaking in some time on the bay. weekday early AM or mid-afternoons and evenings work, if I'm not travelling. LMK when you're targeting and I'll try to clear some time. Brad
  18. hey Sindale wish I could join you-would love the chance to fish with an I-bay expert such as yourself. pike and big I-bay perch are exactly what I want to do this afternoon (with maybe a few eyes thrown in later) but instead im sitting on a plane in newark. i'll wave as I drive by on empire on my way home make sure to report back. I might brave the elements there for a few hours this weekend if its not nice enough to out for a full day on the FLs.
  19. nice ones bob. both near bemus? look similar in sizeto mine from the weekend before. how deep were you trolling? I will be out on waneta tomorrow afternoon. hope they cooperate. I had the same idea on the enclosure. my bimini has the zippers for one just not sure where to get the right one. wind is definitely a killer. I had a funny windburn for 5 days afterwards that stopped mid forehead at my hatline...
  20. hey solgrande any report from last weekend? hope you came come with muskie stink on ya!
  21. maybe we'll have to change the baitfish fund to: "the baitfish and bullets fund" Careful what you wish for. I would love to see better enforcement, but don't a safety check, or them wasting my time tearing my boat apart looking for undersized fish....pick your poison carefully...
  22. Hey Bob S good luck out there. This weekend was a bit tough from a weather standpoint. brutal cold (30s-40s) saturday with a steady 20 mph wind. from what I saw and heard from others, anything goes. fish are all over the place. fewer and fewer fish off the weedlines, and primarily on sunny afternoons. I marked a bunch down 25+/- over 40-60 lurking near bait clouds around the deep hole dropoffs on the W side of the N basin. We picked up a mid-30s fish jigging the bottom on 40 ft but that was it. If I had to do it over, I'd have spent most of my time trolling large baits around those holes and dropoffs, but its tough out there as the N Basin is still looking like pea soup from the turnover. good luck! hope to be out there 1 more time before the end, maybe ~2 weeks, once the tunover settles down and the fish have finished the transition.
  23. Pike hunter, I thought by now you'd come to expect such idiots, with all the I-bay fishing you do. Its unfortunate that such a great body of water is filled with the scum of rochester. I live a mile from the bay and drive right by it on emipre blvd every time I make the 45 minute+ drive to one of the finger lakes, because the few times I've been out there I have a similar experience. its just not worth it to me. I'm not sure that anything would stop them. I think flipping them off would just egg them on to keep doing it. you cant tell me that they are just oblivious to what they're doing. On the other hand, I've also had similar experiences on the FLs too, but they are so big that those situations are the exception, not the rule. I was in the shallows at the south end of Conesus early AM a couple weeks back, and there were NO other boats excpet another fishing boat in the shallows with me. A wakeboard boat decided to tow someone back and forth along the shallows within 50yds of us, even though the whole lake was empty. what a way to ruin a a glass calm fishing day. until they make a law against it, it will keep happening. I do like your golf ball idea. I'm going to keep a 5 iron on board too - something else to throw when I run out of balls
  24. thanks Mick I'm hoping that moon offsets the tail end of that front thats through there and here today...will let ya know how we do. hopefully we're not eating goose eggs out there
  25. way to go out there! thanks for the report. I'm heading down tomorrow through Sunday and you've really got my juices flowin'! The guide I'm fishing with on Saturday said the post turnover muskie fishing has been really tough out there lately; so you must have been doing something right which basin were you fishing? hopefully the bite just keeps picking up...
