  1. I might have to hit that up Bob. my rollie helens order wont be here till next week and I'd love to have some new gear to throw at kinzua this weekend, IF I make it...
  2. I just read a story on this saga just recently, i think it was the in-fisherman pike/muskie issue. anyway, they recount all the missattributions and the subsequent 'clarification' article (last link in the 1st post here) that was written by the true angler. makes sense to me, confirms what I had pieced together elsewhere in drips and drabs about the story, and I think they are a reputable enough mag to check their facts first. closed issue in my mind.
  3. Ray I think you might be onto something with that one. Thanks for the insight- I've been pondering this since it was posted last week the 2003 application of a 'non-power permit' leads me to believe they may indeed be connected still, despite the lack of a power plant currently. that would certainly make it all the easier for a fish to make its way to keuka unharmed in the more recent years. I couldn't believe that a 1972 flood fish would still be alive 38 years later and highly doubt that a handful of those fish might have made up a successfully breeding population. So...I think we have a winner on this one!!! leads me to wonder, if that fish made its way from waneta into keuka via lamoka, how many others are holeing up in lamoka...
  4. Bob don't even get me started... [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  5. that sounds like fun...I might have to give it a try. are the docks in at the launch yet?
  6. definitely a pure. there really aren't muskie in keuka probably as a result of pike oucompetition, if there ever were sometime in the geological history. that said, assuming this muskie did indeed come from keuka (the pike thread a few back shows how the story can morph) I would bet this one migrated its was in from the interconnected rivers/creeks. I don't know how the watersheds work there but there are pures in the river by elmira and in waneta (lamoka) [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  7. I caught just the last couple of seconds of a radio ad for a tackle shop out that way, I assumed it was B&E tackle in ontario, but the ad said they have 'everything' or something like that which sounds like this place the way you all talk about it. anyone know who's running the ads?
  8. Oh well we'll live through this one. No different than the private sector in this ecomony; lots of stores a cutting out their least productive hours of operation. For instance I somehow think that not opening the beaches until school's out kinda just makes sense. cold water+school in session=empty shores... that said, I'm waiting for the other show to drop: next we're going to be reading that docks at the launches are going in at the end of July and out the beginning of Aug. hate to think that someone in Albany might believe this would somehow save $. dummer things have happened though
  9. I stay at Webbs at the north end. not an inexpensive place but theres a marina right across the street and you can rent a dock space for the weekend. in late june you can cast the shallows in 10ft of water around the north end and the 'flats' off mayville are a good bet that time of year too. south basin is rather shallow with little structure so unless you're trolling suspeded fish I'd stay to the north end down to the I-87 (?) bridge. couple deep holes across the lake from mayville might be worth a try for eyes but not sure at that time of year. 10. Yes, I'm certain we will given our similar interests. I'm still debating where I'll head for the june opener. thinking either Chaut or Waneta but I'm leaning Chaut since I found out there is a bass tourney on Waneta that day ...of all the lakes and days to pick...but thats another story. Hoping to get down to the Allegheny sometime in the interim to feed the need (they don't have a closed season) but we'll see how things shake out
  11. good luck with that. hopefully nothing major [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  12. oops I now see in the first post: LM again, the citicas come reccommended as do the Revo line from Abu Garcia as offering good bang for the buck and are both good bass reels. from there I would look to find a combo that fits your budget range. the citica fish eagle II combo looks to be a good value.
  13. I cant take credit for the tape trick, its been around for a while. happy to share the tips that i picked up when I was learning (I'm still fine tuning the technique actually) Gustofson- shoulda guessed by your muskie comment in an earlier post that you and Bob were in cahoots That wasn't you with him when he and I crossed paths on Seneca a few weeks ago, was it? Kwatchi- there are a ton of cabellas combos. I would suggest narrowing it down to a couple of reels you like and find a combo that includes it. IMHO, the reel the critical component because of the moving parts and they won't steer you wrong on a rod as long as they paired the two to do what you want it to. on that note, what do you want to use it for? bass, pike, muskie, other? myself and some guys on here might be able to help you narrow the reel down to some that are good but affordable NM
  14. Hey Scramp- not sure where you're coming from, but I hit the bait shop at the South end of I-bay on my way out if I'm fishing live bait. they have some large swimmers that I use for pike. not sure if they're technically shiners or not, I never pay attention to those details. Good luck - I'll be thinkin of you guys if the ball and chain won't unshackle me for a few hours...
  15. I will be entertaining family for my daughters 1st communion that afternoon (and probably the next day too) Choice of 3 days and she went ahead and picked that one after I told her not to ok rant over If I do get out either Sat AM or sometime sunday I'm sure it will be conesus, given the proximity. no chance at a night gig, so it will be a piker day for me. I'm sure the lot will be a zoo though
  16. pull just a bit more line out beyond what you might expect to cast and then lay a piece of tape across the spool. it will keep your birds nest from going too deep when they do happen. electrical tape is good, but scotch tape will 'break away' in case you get a fish on that runs past that point in the line. as soon as you release your thumb on the cast 'roll' the reel so that the reel is on the side rather than top of the reel. will help with preventing overruns while you're still 'educating' your thumb. (you will get a better feel over time on how to feather the spool during the cast- its not an all or none thing) unlike a spinning reel where you 'load up' the rod to help propel the lure, you want to keep a smooth motion back and forth maintaining an even amt of tension on the line. otherwise try the roll cast: with the rod 90 degrees from you target and a foot or so line out, swing the lure toward the target and in a circle. when the lure gets to the bottom release and point the rod at the target. good luck NM
  17. SPEND THE MONEY!!!!! you dont have to spend a fortune, but ALL the guys I chat with on a national bass site say the same thing: you get what you pay for on baitcasters. lots of very seasoned guys gave up on BCs because they would always backlash only to try again with a 'real' reel and were amazed at the results. I use a curado and these are tried and true-incredibly easy to learn on, although the citica is basically the same reel (same housing and many interchangable parts) but is around 1/2 the cost.
  18. not to say that there is not some error built into those units, but remember that what the wheel is measuring is your speed relative to the water movement whereas GPS is absolute speed so they usually shouldn't be exactly the same. try going in opposite directions if you haven't already and see if the variance is consistent or not, which will tell you whether its current movement or error. that said, I do seem to recall something about the paddlewheels being inaccurate under 5 mph due to the resistance of the magnet used to measure the rotation hampering movement, but don't quote me on that.
  19. wow, not sure what I'm going to do with myself for the next two months thinkin about that biggun! guess I could throw for some lousy bass and hope for the best
  20. got it thanks. can't figure out how to reply to a pm on my mobile though...especially after a few pops on st paddys... we are launching from the state park by the canal. tan and white nitro fish ad ski...see you tomorrow! thanks again! [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  21. hey bob nice job can you PM me some details: depths location etc. my boat is full tomorrow: hitting the water at 9. will we see you there? [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  22. getting mine out of storage right now...wet tomorrow! [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  23. Bob, I'm planning on heading out there on Sunday for one open water jaunt before the close; so you'll have to report back here tomorrow night. I haven't been yet this year, but all the reports I've seen on multiple sites have been positive: along the shore to 1st drop all around the lake. and the seneca cayuga canal is usually good too if you get blown off the lake proper. the city launch is probably a better bet than the state park marina down the road for likely open water, but I'm not sure if any of the launches at the north end are in fact open water yet so be prepared for a plan B launch site in case you have to head further south. I've been trying to check out the Ramada webcam but its been out of service. think the last time I got a pic it was still some ice in the north end earlier this week. Will be making my way to the allegheny res in a few weeks. no way I can make it another 2 months of not throwing the big baits... good luck!
