A brief outline below: Monday- Showers and lightning. We waited till late morning and managed 5 keeper fish at the 24/8 line. Due to the lake flipping and 45 degrees showing up only 25 down, the 20 foot rigger took all the hits. Stinger pink nuke. Mixed bag of 2 year old kings and 5-8lb browns, lakers, and steelies. Tuesday- Our worst day. Started in close, scooted out to 29N and got chased off by some nasty 4-6 footers. Only kept 3, cant even remember what they hit on. Wednesday- A surprising day for sure. We wanted to run offshore, but only got to the 26N and decided the waves were to big. We were heading back to port and threw up a hail mary and decided to fish 100 fow- the temp was 65 degrees down 90. Well we managed a mixed bag limit of kings, brownies, a laker, and steelie. The bigger kings were 18, 21 and the bigger browns were 11, 13lbs. The hot baits were White/White spinny with a Big Weenie Blue Special out 155 #2 wire and DW SS Gator down 80. We were the only boat fishing inside. Thursday- Started where we hit our fish on wednesday and by 7:00 the empty inside waters turned to a boat pack full of dead rods! Boats scattered and headed north. I think we managed 7, no hot baits. Friday- Waited till 7am to head out and boxed out within a few hours. 42nd took a few hits down 60, W/W spinny and big weenie fly, gator/gator did well. All in all it was a good trip- thanks to everyone that posts reports and tips that give tourists some heads up of what to expect. If I can get the old camera to work I will post pictures.

Glad east is working for you guys. Last weekend out west we had a 15:1 ratio of junk to walleye. Your right on the size though- lots of fish ohio's this year.

Yeah the walleye fishing has been bad on Erie this year. Unless your running out to the border, or you get lucky and the sand bar fires up for a day or two, your in for a frustrating time. I'll be fishing the oak the last week if July, hopefully the fishing is still good then. It's been a long summer thus far. [ Post made via Android ]

I spend a week on lake O every year, (coming from central basin of Erie) last year there was a steady east wind for 3 days before we got to the oak. Let's just say it was a frustrating week. Surface temps of 44 degrees and the rolling lake scattered fish everywhere. I always link fishing winds to bow hunting October's 50-60 degree days, you can't catch fish or kill deer on the couch. I'm looking for two 10 colors. I only fish Ontario one-two weeks per year, so it is not worth it to buy 2 bigger reels and core brand new. Thanks guys... Let me know if you or buddies have anything.

I like the Convector model from Okuma. You can get them new for $75 and are big step up from the Magda model. They work well for us with walleye, trout, and kings.

Mike- lots of theories of what has caused the tens of thousands of walleyes to die. To me the one that makes the most sense is a combination of constant rough seas and the vigors of spawning. The fish have spotted floating all the way east of Cleveland. Like I said though, many theories... [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

I've read numerous reports so far this spring under the report page. Has the weather this spring hurt your fishing overall? So far this year fishing western/central Basin of Erie, the entire months of April/May have been lost to weather. Last year at this time we logged 11 trips and 7 2-man tickets. The water temp is still in the low 50's and should be in the low-mid 60's, and the water has been a solid chocolate milk color since ice-out. The weather is looking to finally break here... we've had rain and wind 15-25+mph 42 of the last 61 days. At least the Great Lakes Beer supply has been good.

I primarily fish an average of 35-45 fow in Erie. I would like to add 2 leadcore rigs to the walleye arsenal- a 10 color would run too deep. Can a 10 color be cut into two equal sections to form two 5 colors without damaging the leadcore?

I fish the NE Ohio tributaries, I am not an expert but usually do well. 90% of the time I fish an egg pattern with a nymph dropper. The traditional egg and crystal meth sucker spawn have been good for me, but this year I will be trying the Blood-dot egg pattern. The nymphs I use are; elk creek caddis and stone flies.

300 yards of #50 power pro is a popular backing. Using a spro swivel to connect the copper to the backing & to connect the flurocarbon leader to the copper is common. Copper is fished of boards or down the chute (flatlined right off the back).

Species Breakdown: All Kings but 1 Atlantic, 1 brownie, 1 steelie Hot Lure: DW SS 42nd, Seasick Waddler, cut bait Trolling Speed: 2.3-3.1 Down Speed: 2.0-2.5 Boat Depth: mainly 90-150 fow Lure Depth: Riggers 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90. Divers 180-260 2 settings. 400 copper. ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Fished the first week of August. Things were tough with the upwell. But we managed to do decent. Lots of skips- only 2 matures 28 and 27 the rest were 3-11lbs. The Atlantic was 6.5lbs and the brownie was 4lbs. 5:30am on day 1 we ripped into the 28lber- that was as quick of a start as we could have asked for, but most of the rest were smaller kings. Most of them we tossed back except the ones that were bleeding or didnt look like they had a chance to make it. Almost all of our action came off downriggers. We had trouble getting our divers and copper going, and when we did get into a nice hit or a screamer we lost them. Only 3 fish landed all week off divers and copper with 13 hook ups. We only lost 2 fish out of a lot on the downriggers. I'm not sure if we were doing something wrong or it was just coincidence. Note* we do not use snubbers. All in all it was a pretty good trip- tough to get them going because the bigger fish were off shore and the 3-4 footers take their toll on our aluminum boat, so we fished mainly the 24-25 lines 14-8 lines. I appreciate Captain Mick's and Maniac's help as well as some other great guys I came into contact with during my trip & everyone on LOU that has offered unselfish advice to me to help learn where and how to catch fish!!! I would like to make it up this Fall again, but it does not look promising. Next year I would like to take 2 or 3 weekends instead of 1 straight week.

Myself, my dad, and brother are leaving Ohio and work behind for a week to fish off the Oak. We'll be up there Saturday July 31st till Saturday Aug 7th. Our boat name is Scorpio. It would be nice to run into some of you guys up there. I'll have internet access so while there to check up on the LOU boards. Hopefully the weather and wind cooperates!

Thanks Billy- like the other guys have stated, the main problem is losing bottom after a month or so of use. In addition, not marking many fish, missing gaps in returns, marking fish below the bottom (not sure how that happens but it does), and very cluttered screen. Hummingbird has been helpful with customer service, but with this many of people having troubles with them I think some sort of "recall" should be considered.

Strangley enough I ended up with the same model. Hunmingbird would not do a refund, so I took the unit back to basspro and they gave me store credit. The selection was rather limited and the 778 was the best model they had... so, round 3!! Hopefully 3rd time is the charm. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
