For what it's worth the only bait i use there is a nickel spoon. Red eye, johnson, docktor. I can't get a conesus tiger on a spoon though,go figure. I think they come from the same hatchery. I was lucky 2 years ago and got to watch the stocking at conesus. Quite an operation. They spilled a couple hundred while filling the boats. The little guys were all over the launch disoriented and confused. I wanted to net a bunch of them and put them in my brother's pond but i figured the fine for possessing 20 undersize muskies would take the fun out of it.

I fished from 7 to 1 today. I got a nice one on early near the causeway but it got off on the second jump. After that i had 2 smaller follows and boated a cutie about a foot long. Water is high, clear and 74 degrees when i left. Good to get out after 5 weeks with no fishing. Alcohol free gas is $4.11 at nice and easy on rt. 20. I'm staying in clayton for a week starting the 12th. Any pointers that don't involve canada?

Otisco lake tiger on the fly
old man replied to justtracytrolling's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
I took a whack at fly fishing about 15 years ago after reading flys could catch fish when all else fails. If you want to try it practice from a boat so you won't have all those trees behind you. It won't take long and you'll have it down. I got pretty good at it and caught some pike that way but only when they were on anyway. When i broke out the fly rod during a shutout day it didn't help. There is just no esox magic bullet. When they're hungry they eat anything, when they're not you get blanked. -
I believe this to a point. I always check the moon calendar before fishing. I have seen windows open around moon events but weather trumps all. I booked a place at cht. A few years ago during september full moon. The day i got there the lake turned over and the trip was a bust. I will take low pressure, overcast skies, and an approaching thunderstorm over moon phase anytime.

Muskies in central basin of Lake Ontario

I'm with you,why none in the middle ever? Seems like a trout troller would hit one now and then but you never hear about it. I know a guy who claims to have had a smallmouth bit off by one out of sodus but no proof. In the mid 90's there were reports of musky at oak orchard. I tried there a bunch and caught lots of pike but no musky. I think a lot of musky sightings are reported by folks who saw a northern and don't know the difference. Life would be better if musky would use the whole lake but i have yet to see proof. -

15 years is a long dry spell. My advice is start casting. I know trollers get more fish but they miss out on boatside hits;nothing like it. Stay in 10 fow and cast whatever looks good to you. When you run into a hungry one it will eat anything. I catch one there about every other time i go. I caught my first and biggest musky trolling but after catching my first casting i was done with trolling. And when casting you will never pull a fouled bait around for an hour.

yeah, some of those bass boats seem to take run and gun to another level. I might run around more myself if i had a 300hp ranger. Looks like a fun ride. I'm back home after a so-so week there. Bite was streaky for me. Caught 2 small tigers and a fair number of pike. None over 30". Never fished there during summer before. Awful lot of angler pressure there.
