  1. just a consideration..... The older gm heads also develop a small water leak in the head between the water port and the exhaust port. the distance between the two is small and in time rust causes a small hole so water transfers from the water port to the exhaust port and then into the cylinder when the engine is off. Farmer automotive will confirm this failure, Dan gets 10 - 20 a year and we get a hand full each year. The new heads have more material between the ports. Also dont buy salvaged 1980's heads to fix your problem, it will be back soon if they were used only one year (the rusting process has started) You wont know by a compression test only a leak down test....... Usually the engine will run poor at low rpm though... Tim Habecker Krenzer Marine.
  2. Krenzer marine, Sodus Point, NY.: $850.00. service, gas, ramp, bath houses, walk to downtown and Warrens bait shop.
  3. Valvtect is 10% ethanol, with an additive blended in the regular gasoline. The research based additive reduces the combustion temperature to near normal (ethanol free gas), it prevents phase separation for up to 18 months (the fuel mixing from wave action doesn’t work), it helps remove the water content from the fuel tank and we are told it drives your engine clean. Valvtech and Startron were the leaders in this fuel issue as of the summer of 2010 based on scientific research. We at Krenzer Marine have sold Valvtech for 2 years and believe the product is doing an excellent job. Our Valvtech distributor does a moisture test on our tank before every fill-up, they are very proactive. To our knowledge the last of the ethanol free fuel was used up by May of 2010, at least in the new York State area, so If you fill up in NY., I assume it is 10% ethanol. 15% ethanol is proposed, not a close topic just yet. The New York State Marine Trades Association (your local major marine dealerships) sends tens of thousands of dollars to a lobbiest firm in Albany & Washington to fight the ethanol issue every day. Understand that ethanol super cleans (dissolves deposits) so when you start running it in the boat deposits that are in you tank will now mix with the fuel. The water separator will catch most, we have had the screen on the end of pick-up tubes become plugged with debris and the small filter in the base of the carb (if you have one) can plug. If the fuel tank is contaminated we will tip a boat in our lift and pump out 15 gallons of fuel from the bottom corner of the fuel tank I wouldn’t go and change fuel lines and fuel tanks just yet, I would replace the water separator every year or sooner (your engine will tell you by spitting and sputtering), make sure fuel fill seals good and vents don’t draw water into the tank. Strongly consider using Valvtech or Startron additive especially if you don’t have a Valvtech fuel supplier. We double the Valvtech additive for winter storage or if the customer rarely runs the boat. Tim Habecker Krenzer Marine, Inc.
  4. Took the boat on trade, it was a good runner for the last owner. It has a volvo 350 w/ DP, I think it is a good solid boat. Tim Habecker Krenzer Marine 315-483-6986
  5. Yankee our Cruisers Yachts / Rampage rep was in yesterday and we can have a brand new 30 or 33 Rampage in the parking lot next week. Check out the Hooters / Rampage fishing team out.......... Tim
  6. All three are good hull designs for fishing the great lakes. Areas of concern; Bahas can have premature stringer / transum failure, give each motor mount a slight turn with a wrench, if it turns easy it is rotted. Then with a hammer lightly tap the stringer and transum listen for solid thump (good) or hollow sound (not good). Also if it is a single inboard can you dock it?? Often times big and spacious and the original family still ownes + runs the company. Thompsons can have premature floor failure, some are all plywood and others are glass liner over plywood. Back in the day some Thompsons were refloored 2 - 3 years after they were put into service. The company is gone. Penn Yan: tough boat. Out of business but TJ can help. Used boats: Owner who takes good care = good boat. Owner who doesn't care = bad boat. Tim Habecker Krenzer Marine
  7. Your fuel vent does sound to be acceptable and is actually used in the new boats today by most manufactures. The fill neck actually has the 1.5" fuel "into the tank" line and in addition a small vent line (3/8") running from the tank back to the fill neck with a 3/8" screened hole. Sometime in the manufacturing process or during a repair that vent line can be pushed down below the top of the tank and cause fuel (when you fill up full) to trapp in the low spot, thus vapors can't move back and forth during expansion / contraction. To cure this 1. find the low spot in the hose and lift it allowing the fuel to runn back to the tank. Or 2. plug a small hose into the vent inside the fill neck and blow it out ( you will most likely have to remove the screen with a pair of needle nose pliers). Problem is that this usually causes difficult fueling (fuel spits back out the fill neck on your hand) not a strong fuel smell in the boat. I think you have a leak. The tune-up may have something to do with the fuel leak. Carb adjustments???? Water sep.??? During wintrerization, summerization and tune-ups a tech. can easily lean on something and cause a very time consuming problem. Good luck Tim Habecker Krenzer Marine.
  8. Old boat motors are exempt. You can strip your motor, get a rebuilt from Merc, Jasper or a machine shop and then reinstall your components. Tim Habecker Krenzer Marine, inc.
  9. Wow, last season we rebuilt 14 carbs (approx. $300.00 ea.) and only used our diagnostic computer 10 times ($100.00 charge) and we can usually guess IAC valve (idle air control) or knock sensor (water in fuel) by the way they describe it on the phone. Many of my 5.7, 6.2 and 8.1 MPI customers carry a spair IAC valve in their boat ($80.00) and can change it in less than 5 min.. Fuel injection has a set idle and we can't adjust it with the computer and the factory will not give us downloads only factory reps can change mapping (had it done on one motor, 2005 8.1 volvo). My fishermen do like the carbs because they can drop the idle 100 less than an efi. (be carefull of transmission chatter) I would not recommend switching the components from carb to efi; too costly. Going forward I would recommend motors with efi, they do run smooth day in and day out. The new electronic shift units have an electronic troll mode at the helm to fine tune slow speeds with a push button. It blows cable shift away. New EPA law: January 1, 2010, all boat motors in US must have fuel injection & catalytic converters. Builders made a deal that they can use non-cat on the remaining 4.3's and 8.1's till they are gone (sometime in the 2010 year). These motors are $3,000.00 to $3,800.00 more, we get our first next week. Tim Habecker Krenzer Marine, Inc.
  10. Most marinas are still selling NON-ETHANOL gas. The ethanol movement has been confusing for the last two years because locations selling fuel as well as distributors do not want to get slapped with a fine. Originally (2007) the government said you must convert to ethanol gas after you sell whats presently in your tanks. We sold off our tanks and asked our supplier for ethanol, they said sure but they had to sell off their tanks and then the refineries need to sell of their tanks. I am told by our supplier that North America has one to three years of fuel stocked at refineries and that is NON-ETHANOL stock. Thus anybody who can get NON-ETHANOL gas, gets it because it is trouble free in new and old engines. Our gas, Valvetec is mixed from NON-ETHANOL gas for now but will change when their supplies run out. If you notice many highway gas stations had ethanol stickers on their pumps but many pulled them off or crossed off the 10% ethanol portion. The troubles are yet to come, it is a fact that many boaters in Florida are having troubles because they filled up at highway gas stations and did get ethanol gas. The motors ran poorly and it was not just old boats, many were current models. Use additives, change filters and don't let the gas get old. Tim Habecker Krenzer Marine
  11. Dane, I gave Rich 2 pretzel rods and he almost threw up. My assignment for this trip was to fill the shoes of Bills Father (though I don't know him) by driving the boat sometimes and providing food + refreshments. After I spread the mayonaise on the bread with my index finger (couldn't find a knife) they made their own and I only was asked to drive after I washed my hands. At one time my rod radar went off while eating an olive loaf sandwich (Tom should offer these at Jack's by the way). I carefully placed the 1/2 sandwich by the rod holder, hauled in the fish, sat down and finished the olive loaf.
  12. The wording is difficult in some areas because it was written by a lawyer from the Capital group (lobbiest for the Empire State Marine Trades Association) but it is a bill that would require all boaters in New York to get a driving certificate. See your NYS Senator and or assembly man. Tim Habecker Krenzer Marine, Inc. More information on the proposed legislation that requires ALL BOATERS TO BE LICENSED for operation. Long and short: contact your local assemblyman today if, if you oppose this bill (for reasons detailed below) let them know. THIS IS AN URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT REGARDING S5889C GALEF, requires boating safety certificates of all persons operating a mechanically propelled vessel; provides for a phase in period and penalties for violations. This bill is on third reading in the Assembly and we need all the ESMTA RGIONs and their members to call their Assemblyman and tell them that you oppose this bill. We need all of you to make these calls immediately to your Assembly members. Each of your regional have spreadsheets that indicates the particular Assembly Member representing your marina. PLEASE ACT NOW. The reasons for opposing this bill are outlined below: The Empire State Marine Trades Association (ESMTA) strongly opposes this legislation which will require all boat operators born after January 1, 1992 to hold a boating safety certificate. The ESMTA is a leader in promoting the safe and proper use of boats, marine accessories and related facilities. It is comprised of seven regional associations: Association of Marine Industries; New York Marine Trades Association; Hudson Valley Marine Trades Association; Eastern New York Marine Trades Association; Boating Industries Association; the Rochester Area Marine Trades Association and, the Marine Trades Association of Western New York. The ESMTA has over 400 members. The ESMTA works closely with the State Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation in order to insure the safety of boating in New York State. This is why New York continues to rank among the top among states that have the best boating safety records, and lowest accidents, injuries and fatalities rates from boating nationwide. This is true despite being among those states with the highest boat registrations per capita. ESMTA has worked hard over the years to enact enhanced safety provisions for boating, particularly for young, inexperienced operators, which is reflected in the current statute that requires certain persons to hold a boater safety certificate in order to operate a boat or jet ski in New York. This bill, however, requiring that all operators hold a certificate, regardless of age and whether an experienced adult is present, raises many issues for the marine industry. There is no evidence that what the bill proposes will improve boater safety. In fact, the added burden of this new requirement will only discourage boat ownership at a time when the economy has put tremendous pressure on new boat sales. Further, this bill changes completely the well thought-out boater safety requirements that are currently on the books which maximize safety without unduly burdening boat owners or discourage entry into the activity of boating by young people. Finally, it is doubtful that Parks and other agencies that conduct the boater safety courses will be able to effectively handle the number of those who will now need in all cases a certificate to operate a boat. For these reasons, ESMTA urges the sponsors to hold this bill until the industry, boating groups and agencies charged with the bills implementation have time to review the impacts of this legislation on boater safety, the marine industry and the activity of boating in New York.

  14. Gain strength in numbers and begin pressuring Albany. The marine industry is beginning to get taken advantage of..... Two Months ago a bill was passed by Governor Patterson and the rest of the Democrats to increase boat registration fees as of August 1, 2009. Three size catagories exist but I will give you an example: 16' - 26' the fee goes from $36.00 $45.00 and the surcharge goes from $10.00 - $12.50. That sits well with me except all additional funds will be directly deposited into the Highway and Bridge Trust Fund of New York State. I would like to see the additional funds directed towards municipal dockage, ramps, access parking areas or even any roads or bridges within 5 miles of a municipal marine access location. This would still put construction companies to work while at the same time helping the people that gave the money. We at Krenzer Marine are active members and donators of BIA (boating industries association of central New York) and the Empire Marine Trades Association. The ESTMA is the state wide association that that all reginal associations (BIA or Rochester area marine dealers association or Buffalo Marine trades association) support. We as dealers are asked to become members of the local associations that we sell boats in, we pay memberships and also unite as one force to fight for the rights of our customers and selves. I go to Albany as a ESTMA member every year in the Spring and tell elected officials (at group meetings set up by the ESTMA) that my customers will not stand for some of these crazy proposed bills. We did not know about the fishing license fee increase (our lobbiest didn't have it on his top five list) so we didn't push the topic, we had and have others that appeared more important at the time. I inform the Sodus Point Charter Association of the important topics I hear about and they try to generate support. My advice, watch for state proposals that will get into your pockets. They are going to creap up on the marine user, get passed and you may never get them changed back. I will try inform this site of topics I hear about (I asked my town superviser to request road and bridge money for lake road leading into Sodus Point) and recommend ways to pressure your elected officials. In closing, snowmobiling in New York State was closed on State trails 3 or 4 years ago. Snomobilers united, they now have 15 - 20 times more money on reserve with their lobbiest to fight crazy bills. Tim Habecker Krenzer Marine.
