  1. Spill water on unfinished oak white or red steps & they turn black . I have had to vigorisly sand them out on many occasions due to being uncoverd , nothing to do with the fasteners. Not the best choice for planer boards. Better choices out there. I had a wood boat that had an oak tramsom board rot out. I replaced it w/ teak.
  2. The DEC in the letter they sent to me said they DID NOT support it. If they had no stance ,that is what they would have written. Not suportting is a no vote as I see it. When The Buerau of Fisheries does not support ( and that IS their official stance, read my thread on Open lake disscusion) why would you want to get this law pushed through ? Maybe the DEC changed its stance to opposing it after seeing the current situation of the Lake Ecosystem which we all know is not great at the present time.
  3. One of the first things I learned as a carpenter was "water on wood no good" Oak doesn't like water it turns black when it gets wet . You wont be able to completly seal the boards forever. a small crack will let water in. Use redwood or cedar. Thats whats best and easiest available for exterior wood localy. Pricy wood though& hard to get. Mathews & Fields in Roch has it.
  4. Chairman of the State Energy commitee means he is a big hitter& means he has influence. Also means lobbiest will "talk "to him a lot. What is his official position on this? He hasn't said in the response he is against it or for it. He could have written BLAH BLAH BLAH . It would have ment the same. I don't trust any of them.
  5. The stright 9 & 11 on boards & riggers set shallow worked well for me. Also in very shallow water I used jointed rebels & smithwicks. Bent nose eye down to give a wide wobble and so it would not dive as deep. Ran them off boards on shore in wave trougth for browns and did well .75-125' back w/ riiger ball just under surface was good on choppy days in 8 - 15 ft also.Adjust lead length & color to water clarity. Also I put small split rings on all sticks & tied direct for max action.
  6. The DEC says that it is not in support of the three rod idea. You have seen evidence of mortality rates of catch & release of salmon. ( I'm sure there are more out there) The lakes bait fish ratio is in serious limbo.Lots of invasives with new ones everyday. A battle to keep a balance ecosystem. Now we are pretty much saying that The DEC is a bunch of idiots and that a few fisherman that fish the lake are a better judge of the situation they reasearch all the time . So lets go to a polititian7 get what some w ant at any cost and screw what may or may not not be good for the fishery . Did anyone see what DNR said about the steelhead crash a few years back?I love it. The head of the DEC that gave you the great fishing you love so much is a pinhead. Great stuff.
  7. Erby this is news & I thought if you or anyone else were really concerned about the well being of the lake you might want to know. It ain't about me being right.
  8. I recived a letter to me from DEC Section Head William Culligan It Read: Thank you for your inquiry about three rods......Commisioner Gratis asked me to reply. DEC is NOT proposing a change to this reg . It has been suggested a number of times over the past several years, but Bureau of Fisheries staff HAVE NOT supported the idea . The reg is found in En Con law and would have to go thru leg to change . Thank you for your intrest ...............Sincerly etc. Have NOT supported idea. Lets not buck the Bureau of Fisheries boys. It was a nice personally signed letter on NYS letterhead and all.
  9. You better have taken the day off & gone fishing!
  10. This post is getting tired. Lacks a sence of humor, is a little to elitest, Turnabout is not fair play, etc. I fished from the keys to the canadian shield & learned that both the water & the fish are pretty much the same everywhere. My original reason against , which common sence told me first, was proven by NH, stands. Once the facts are out there's not much more to say. Not being one to hide in the club house & cry, I speak my mind . I'll hang with the trib guys who cast & retrive, more my style anyway. We get blamed for a lot of the woes of the lake. LOU policy is to protect the small streams from the lifters, snaggers, lurkers, or non sportsman as I like to say .That card gets played a lot on here. Who will protect the lake from the same nonsportsman ?That would be me, hey, I tried. You can lead a horse to water......... . Number & sizes of trib return fish are down & the NH study shows us part of the reason why& some discount it, some split hairs or plain just don't care . To conservre & protect for future generations .
  11. Post deleted. Violation of site policy: No personal insults allowed. We encourage open debate on LOU, but not at the expense of others. Thank you.
  12. You have got to be freakin kiddin me. Read my old post on three rod & reasons for it. The NH DEC proves my point in spades.
  13. Hey guys ,did you read that.?Wow .I hate to say I told you so but........
  14. If the law passes & I think it probably will ,there should be no special fees or stamps or use permits asociated with it. All who buy a NYS freshwater licence should be allowed to fish within that law . I still feel as strongly as I do but The law, be it 2 0r 3 rods has nothing to do with its executtion. This state makes mega bucks off the LO fishery in licences & indirect tax revenue. . One guy said he spent about 10 grand or so last year up hear. At 8% thats 800 bucks & thats one guy & now they want an extra 10 or 20 . It's extortion to some degree. You can call me a flame Ray but please don't call me a flamer.I don't want my wife to find out.
  15. These fees & or stamps are fees I may have to pay also & I don't like to pay more for something I already get with really no good reason.A lot of you say you don't care as long as you can still fish. Well you should care .The gov is banking on that.Since when did they become an outfitter for lack of a better word. That part really has no bearing on my position of the three rod. I don't like the gov playing me like a fiddle & nickle & diming me.The state makes a lot of money on licences & tax rev from LO fisherman. They need to spend it better. Is that stirring the pot?
  16. Every few years I would take the worn spoons & ones I didn't hook up with & clean them. Took zip strip to get tha laquer off . polished them w/ silver polish my wife had or used car polish. I painted or used colored sharpies to higlight colors & resprayed them w/ laquer a few coats& sometimes taped them ..Somtines I use micro peral glitter my wife had to give the ' Crystalina' effect. Had some original colors, some worked real well , some did not. Doing it now in my basement for spring. I have about 20 now I'm doing. It's fun .
  17. Question for you Nemisis. Why is the size of the LL's so small & the reason for the derby being cancelled?
  18. So the rich get the right to pay a little more to run extra rods? . How about extra money for a licence so I can drive 100 miles per hour? Or extra money so I can vote twice? Since when should we be 'Buying' our rights. The licene fee is supose to be used to manage the resource not sell privledge. If we as sportsman buy into it we condone it.
  19. I have use ultra green for steelhead leaders for 30 years. It is by far the best & I have tried everything. The 2 lb makes great ice fishing jig line. The color absorbs light & disapers in the water. It stretchs a little but I think that is good in lighter test so it won't snap w/ head shake.
  20. And screwing things up for the long term in the process . Hint hint. Sounds like a buy off to me.
  21. I guess it all comes down to the almighty dollar. Some of the reasons I hear mirror& rival the ones I hear from my kids.Favt & figures just like the ones from my life insurance salesman. Do morals & respect for the resource have any bearing hear? Some of you guys are willing to make & have made a mockery of the sport. Fishing evolved way back when for food gathering reasons & has evolved into a game . The kids of today have no attention span at all &it's no wonder. Take your names off LOU pledge if you don't want to follow it.We are so worried about the lake. Calling ME a hipocriite? Out west at some hunting ranches they wanted to mount a rifle with a scope on a turet that you could controll from a mouse from your computer and actually shoot the deer from the computer at your home. Could adapt that to a rod holder on the back of a boat with a joystick and play the fish from your home PC . What a GREAT idea!!!!!!!!!! . I could catch a fish & not even leave the house. If all you had to do was buy a licence & pay the charter , I'm sure the state would approve. Also I say wtih the reasoning I hear to say YES put up those wind turbines . The state will get a short term boost of revenue that we sorly could use. I don't fish the eastern basin so what do I care. When they fall over even more structure out there to fish around. Yup, Yup, got to have those3 rods to keep those poor unfortunate kids interested in fishing, YUP , YUP. And guys won't come back up here cause they can,t catch a fish out thereYUP. The less fish out there to catch so lets catch more of them rational is crazy. The Tribs are packed each year with more & more coming up each year w/ the fly fishing boom . Lets preserve & leave more of the fish in the lake to return to spawn so that end of it gets more & more state profitable. In fact maybe we should reduce the creel limit on the lake as they did the tribs to help that end. Only take one steelhead per on the lake also. That seems to be the growth side of this. Its way cheeper for a guy to fish the tribs than the lake. But my guess is it won,t go over big on this board .People& buisness have been fleeing this state because of high taxes & no employment for years. With everyone that leaves goes a few fisherman & licence fees& tax dollars& fines . DEC used to be fish &wildlife management for most part but now has to deal with more & more enviromental issues. The selfishnes I see on this amazes me.Maybe its just me and my old attitude. And I was personaly attacted, belittled & insulted on this thread and others. And to no surprize those are still there. Well, got to go out to the garage & invent a set of planer boards that can carry those extra lines. I figure a 4x8 sheet of plywwod & my boat winch ought to do it.Get some of those big reels to hold that 3000 ft of copper& go down to the weight room so I have the mussle to turn the handle . Maybe a tug boat & weld up a set of rocket launcers& some 20 ' booms for my extra riggers . I wonder if the Zoo would loan out a few of their Chimps ?
  22. After being scolded by the moderator for personal attacks & having an " attitude that is getting real old real fast " I decided to take my oppinion to th DEC & have contacted a few div. & urged them to thwart any legislation that may come down the line concerning the 3 rod rule for reasons I stated. I will tommorow try a few more. I stayed away from polititians who I would be suprized If they knew an 8 wt from a downrigger wt or a spin dr from a picture of themself. I aslo never said I wanted to snag fish I f you reread the post( sorry , you can't ) I only used it as a comparison. If I look into my crystal ball I see if the law passes, New and more effitient ways to deploy multiple lines with extreme precision to any depth . Self propeled side boards planning out to 200 yards or more carring multiple lines .When will the power asist great lakes reel be available? Interface them to the helm w/ a joystick and you won't even have to leave your seat. Cars drive the speed limit so most anglers will fish max number allowed . Don't attempt to tell me what will or probably will happen. I have talked with fellow anglers about this & a lot don't like trolling for S & T. A friend who hunts out west & fishes FLA. says that he likes a more hands on approch. Likes to cast & retrive , feel the strike. Says trolling is an 'inpersonal " way to fish. Took him fly fishing tribs this spring & he liked that. Combine that with the fact that Sal Trolling is a very expensive way to fish & a 10 + % unemployment rate to see why numbers are down. Look at all the boats for sale. Thats my research. I have morereasons but I will keep them to myself . I would not want to appear beligerant of combative to some on this issue.Did the fairness docterine pass when I wasn't looking? And you guys can say whatever you want about or to me. I'm a man & my skin is as thick as it gets .This isn't the first time this has happened to me. The politics of ridicule. I do this to conserve & respect the resources of the lake for future generations& yes those that disagree with me. Tight lines & Fish on!!!
  23. I relased as many as I could that I thought would make it . But my guess is that I probably killed a few more than i would like to admit releasing them. I want to give them as much of a chance as possible but after they go back you just don't know. We have all seen the floaters out there.I'm not worried about you I kind of see where you are coming from. I worry about the fishery as a whole. I won't turn my back on it.It's pretty much in my back yard. It's what I live for. Spoonfed, Dont ask if you don't want an honest answer.
  24. Holy Mackrel I can't belive it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally someone who gets it. Everthing you said is just what I think. You are the man. Great minds think alike. Your post are my thoughts to the T . Good Job!
