  1. a guy told me the same thing gonna try it this year....that camp dry water proofing stuff
  2. gander mountain has a bunch onsale 55 lb thrust transom mount 225... they also have like a 40 and 22 lb for cheaper...if you go to the bow mount troling motor area there are many on clearance.....1/2 off lowest ticketed price. I bought a 40lb thrust minn kota edge for 149.00. Comes with everything bolts manuals...mount and foot control the only thing wrong was the box was f'd up. i looked inside and sure enough it was perfect and un f'd up. they had another 40lb like the one i.bought and a few 55 lb thrust. i think the 55 lb were 1/2 off 399.00. just a heads up for you guys if your interested. By the way that was at the tonawanda store.
  3. Romlops is right about where the gas went. Temperature affects the "size" of the gas. You have Gross and Net gallons depending on the temperature they will be different. The pumps dont cheat you out of any gas. They are calibrated frequently so when the state stops by for a surprise they dont get fined for cheating you out of any gas. Ever notice that sticker issued by the state- weghts and measurement dept.? As for using E-10 and putting water in it to see if you have water on the bottom in time....it will never happen. Ethanol (same thing as alcohol.....and DRY GAS) holds water...it will mix right in with the gas particals and burn up and go through the engine.just like dry gas says it does on the bottle. They are the same thing alcohol is ethanol and dry gas alcohol in a little bottle.
  4. it is probobally your antenna. If they are corroded or broken they wont work for crap or work at all. As long as the radio turns on id replace the antenna first. I am not sure but look around online but will a cb antenna for a truck work?? they look the same but i dont know.If it will work you dont need to go with a really pricey one because your not going to be pumping alot of watts through it.
  5. ok thats still reasonable cost, 250 is nothing if it saves your life hopefully it never gets wet. Im gonna check that link out and search around online.
  6. I was talking to a guy that used a survival/floatation suit and said it kept him very warm in the winter and suggested that i get one. Do alot of people use these in the winter? and how much are they ?
  7. Ok that's good news. Can you normally fish the lower river from a boat all winter? I always remember seeing boats all winter but my dad told me after december there is too much ice ine the water....but I don't remembernuch ice in the river in the winter. Thanks again for the input [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  8. ok tanks for the info guys...are the docks in the water all year around in lewiston?
  9. I wasnt sure where to post this but I am planning on using a boat in the lower river maybe all year around...at least into the winter months. I am wondering about where to launch...do they still have the docks in at the lewiston launch or will i have to do something crazy to get in my boat. Also on the days it is cold and snowy below freezing...after pulling the boat out of the water do I have to do anything like pump antifreeze into the motor so it dont freeze and crack or just take it home and forget about it? Maybe a little overkill but do you guys put tire chains/cables on when launching and retreiving your boat so you dont get stuck on the ice in the boat launch??Any tips would be helpfull. For now i plan to fish below the power authority but i have fished down river for walleyes in the summer. Thanks
  10. Hopefully next year is better, I too had a bad year....not as bad as some. It was about a 50 50 chance I made it back to the dock on my own power. Several times never even left the dock. I only caught 2 fish out on the lake. I think only 1 time i didnt get sea sick...found out after about 4 trips that i cant tie knots out on the water that i get sick, so i have to rig up before putting the boat in and I am probobally fine. Maybe fishing from shore will bring me alittle better luck.
  11. I have heard about that, I think I am going to get that for next year, my boating season most likely is over maybe 1 more trip out. Do they have a tow boat us boat around olcott??
  12. Yea i was really surprised they didnt hit me with a bill unless one is coming in the mail. I have heard horror stories of getting like a 500 to 800 dollar tows when the tow boat comes out. It is pretty embarassing to get pulled in like that but it sounds like it happens to everyone at some point. The one fireman said they dont get calls like this very often I thought they would get calls like that once a week or so. I was very gratefull them guys came out to pull us back in and thankfull noone was hurt.
  13. Yeah It could have been alot worse, sometimes i wish that boat would sink it causes me so much grief and it isnt even my boat. I sure feel alot better now that a took a long nap and got something to eat, Im already starting to forget today and looking forward to the next trip.
  14. Fished for about an hour testing out the new depth finder chartplotter gps unit and everything went to crap. Depth finder started turning off and getting weird, I unplugged it after trying to use the button and i plugged it back in and hit power and nothing so i tried it again and the boat turned off....NOTHING. My brother and I floated around for an hour and a half got blown way out off shore. Thanks to HOTLINES for calling the fire department for us, we really appreciated it we were out there debating on who to call coast guard or 911. We got back to olcott safe and miserable. Nothing but trouble today this was almost the worse day I have had on the lake this year. I just need some time to calm down and forget about today.....and change an alternator and ill be back. We were marking alot of fish from 65-120 FOW should have stayed in closer.
  15. thanks i will check it out. It is an old fish finder probly at least 10 years old. It went funny heading out t 85 feet and started up again coming in around 85 foot. kinda weird but i didnt know if it was not powerfull enough to get the depth in that deep of water and not pick up ANY fish when it was working or atleast giving me a depth. I find it hard to beleive I wasnt going over any fish and still managed to get 2 quick after seting my lines.
  16. thanks for the info guys. I went out this morning, headed out deep to find that my depth/fishin finder is junk and doesnt for for crap over 85 feet. It started flashing 12.7 ft about a mile out. When i got a bit farther out and stopped for a minute it started working so i continued out to about 400 feet. Now I am out in the middle of nowhere and it was really choppy out there in a 21 foot boat. I set out a green killer spin dr with a green fly and another line both on dipsys and after seeing no fish i was pretty bummed and getting sea sick and so was the wife after about 20 minutes my green setup went off and peeled off about 50 feet of line and i grabbed it and handed it to my wife. it was a coho about 6 lbs. I was blown away that we caught something so fast without seeing fish or any boats we set up again and trolled another half hour and it was getting to bad for the little boat and we were not feeling great we traveled toward olcott. We hit about 200 feet and stopped because we were feeling better...set out a few lines...got 2 lines tangled....lost a setup to the propeller and was a bit mad and getting sick again but sent out another line and 15 20 min later we got a biteI grabbed the line and reeled in a little king about 7 or 8lbs. Both fish were caught about 30-40 feel down about 100 feet behind the boat with braided line. I finally realized i wasnt seeing any fish out deep untill i got in to 85 feet of water and my finder started working again and lit up with fish. I am very surprised we caught anything today basically fishing in the dark with no fish finder, speed/ temp sensor, no radio. We fished a totall of about 2 hours but spent 4 on the water.
  17. nice fish. About a month ago I was stuck out on the lower niagara in a stalled boat for several hours with my dad and brother at about 10pm to about 130 am. Nobody would stop and we didnt have a radio and my brothers phone and my phone both died....no kicker that night. finally a cnadian boated with a little 14 foot 40 horse motor towed us back to lewiston. The ignition switch wasnt making contact when you turned the key...but the engine cranked over, just no start. I heard it was very expensive for a tow into port and that the sherriff/ coast guard/border patrol wouldnt do it...guess well have to call 911 next time and see.
  18. thanks for the tips guys. I was forced to make my trip out sunday. I didnt get off work untill 2 am so i figured id put it off a day.
  19. blue chrome frog spin doctor probobally put a green hammer fly on put my wonder bread dipsy black/green chrome spin doctor mt. dew spin doctor green or aqua hammer fly behind a chrome dipsy crazy **** spin doctor green crush spin doctor mirage or other white fly behind a chrome dipsy a maroon/glow spin doctor plan to pair up with a bloody death fly behind a metalic pink tiger color dipsy I have 4 protroll flashers mt dew crush and whites/glow. I also have a bunch of spoons just no riggers or copper yet. I have many DW spons and michigan spoons magnum sized in the blue killer and pink killer and nuclear greens. plus glow colored spoons. I know i have a mix match of gear but I am just getting started and finally making my first trip out onto the lake tomorrow morning. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated...maybe a starting point. I am thinking starting straight out of the harbor in 80 foot and head west. Ill be in a green pickup in a black and white thompson boat if you see me down there stop by. thanks in advance ill let you know how i make out tomorrow night. -Eric
  20. I just got this reel as a gift and I want t put copper line on this. Does anyone use this reel for copper line and how much backing and copper will I be able to fit on this? I am planning on putting 40 lb power pro braid on for backing. Any help would be appreciated.
  21. if you use diesel fuel, starting in may 2010 here in PA it will be mandatory that diesel fuel will be a 2% blend with biodiesel. this is basically the same theory as E10 gasoline. this 2% biodiesel blend will reduce MPG and power, increase nitrogen emissions, more expensive and other blends of biodiesel are not yet warrantied by auto makers. though biodiesel is nontoxic reduction in greenhouse gases except nitrogen, biodegradable it is also made in the USA. that is about the only plus. In some states like OH they use a sub octane gas and use ethanol to boost the octane(like 84 octane blended with 10% ethanol will boost it to 87 octane.) in places with clean air acts with reduced RVP gasoline (using 7.8 rvp gasoline instead of 9.0 rvp gasoline) you cannot put ethanol in the gas because it will make it 9.0 rvp gas somehow so 7.8 gasoline is straight gasoline but it has reduced MPG's. RVP is reid vapor pressure and they are talking about the tank at the gas station, the reid basically holds the vapors from going out the vent pipe into the atmosphere. For me the only good thig about this biodiesel and ethanol is that it is just more product for me to haul, they do not send these 2 products up the pipelines therefor they ship by trucks or rail. you just cant mix these products with other products in the pipelines because when they send a shipment all products go through the same pipelines and because of different weights in product they "do not" mix and bidiesel wouldnt be biodiesel if it was shipped in the same line as diese it will mix and you will have regular diesel, same with ethanol it will mix with the gas and wont unmix and not every customer get ethanol in the gas and that would be an obscene ethanol mix and ruin both products. sorry to ramble on, just alittle info to pass on.
  22. stinger, there isnt too much you can do as far fuel treatments other than the stuff you pick up at walmart autozone like STP i like to use now and then on longer trips where i know i will burn a tank of fuel and put all or most of the fuel treatment through the system. as for water in you gas tank the treatment should dry it up. ALL gas tanks have water in them, it doesnt mean you got it at the pump because 99.999% you wont get water there because when i deliver gas i have to use water detecting paste and if there is more than 1 " of water you are not supposed to deliver the gas untill the store owner can pump out the gas. you get water in the tank from condensation, you cant stop it from happening...unless your tank is completeley full. if you stick with mobil or a big named gas station you will get a better quality of gas (more additive) but if you can get gas without ethanol it will burn better.
  23. there is no glue in fiberglass tanks, and older fuel tanks are made of steel. the reason for changing to fiberglass is that steel rusts and then leaks into the enviornment. fiberglass tanks are patched or repaired using fiberglass resin wich is highly dangerous to breath in. I am not trying to get on your case or make a big deal out of gasoline but i deal with the crap at work all the time and I am trained to handle/unload fuel and have to be highly knowledgable about the products i haul. If you buy good name "branded" fuels you will get better performance. places like delta sonic and tops buy unbranded gasoline which is ok and meets the requirments but doesnt have as much additives as a branded fuel will have. additives will cause more efficient burning maximizing your fuel usage in your engine
  24. and ethanol is definitly not a corrosive liquid
  25. ethanol wont do damage to your motor, i haul fuel for a living. it is just grain alcohol. it burns hotter therefore you dont get the MPGs like you do with gas without ethanol but if you get "branded" gas (sunoco, citgo, mobil, BP) you wont see much difference as for ethanol eating away fiberglass that is not true......gas stations use fiberglass tanks to hold fuel! Ethanol will clog up your fuel filters as well. ALL motors are built to run on 10% ethanol or less, unless it is a e-85 flex fuel vehicle. Motors have been built like this for many years.
