  1. I went and bought a 8hp longshaft tohatsu with electric start kicker motor. I have a few things i am considering for it and looking for some other ideas for it. Anyone using the troll master digital throtle control or anything like it. also is it worth getting the electro steer remote kicker steering to use with it so you can use the left and right turn along with the throttle controls? or the T4 remote steer for controlling direction instead of using the ez steer bar to connect your big motor to the kicker and using the steering wheel. Also i was told if I wanted to upgrade this to a 9.8 all I have to do is change the carb because they are the same motor...is there any truth to that? Do you guys use them locking gadgets they make to lock your engine on or take them off so noone takes it.
  2. I have the same boat and motor and mine doesn't spit out a lot of water and never runs hot [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  3. I used to love going to that cabelas. Used to go about 1 time a month untill I moved back from the pittsburgh area. Ill be fishing the spring loc this weekend sat morning and sun night out of olcott then wed through sun out in fair haven maybe ill see you out there [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  4. Thanks hawkeye. I have been leaning toward a tohatsu 8hp from that place but I wanted to make sure from langs outboards where I go for parts and repairs that he could fix that for a reasonable price or if they were a pain in the butt to work on and he won't touch the motor kind of deal. Ill look into that controll king too. What kind of motor mount did you use? I am looking to permanently mount it or leave it on untill maybe winter take it off and on between use [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  5. Id be a liar if I said it never let me down. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  6. thanks for the input. I didnt want to over do it or under power either. I was thinking about sticking with the same motor but my main motor is a 50 hp force 2 stroke. I use a trolling bag to slow it down but i have a big trolling bag and it pulls big time to the side its on, im thinking about getting 2 smaller ones and haveing them on both sides to even it out but I want the kicker for trolling and emergency to get back to the dock. My 2 stroke smokes and will make you sick breathing that in all day if your not trolling into the wind. plus its loud. Saw a guy with a 20 hp yamaha on a small 14 foot boat come in at olcott and could hardly hear it running and it wasnt smoking at all where mine is not so stealthy. I see that option with the remote controlls its that so you can mount a throttle and start switch at the helm instead of using the handle on the motor to controll everything.
  7. I have been looking online at a few online evinrude 15hp mercury9.9 and tohatsu 9.8 im kinda looking to go new but im not so sure. I saw this last post about yamaha and havent even checked their page out. I see the mercurys were like 1700 dollars. I have a 17 foot aluminum boat and im kinda wondering if i should go down to a 6hp or go up to a 15 hp. I dont want to over do it where im going to need a trolling bag in all the time but if my big engine breaks down i dont want to be driving in at 2.2 mph. I also have been looking at the big foot model from mercury but the way it was described it was for a bigger heavier boat than mine dont know if it would be stupid to go that way or the pro kicker by merc or the regular merc. I never really heard much about tohatsu outboards but they look good and are pretty light. How about honda i heard a 9.9 honda will out perform most of the other 9.9's out there.
  8. probobally the reel. I use diawa lc47 and okuma magda 45 and convectors and they reel in fish real good with braid. I dont know hwo to service them reels but probly wouldnt hurt to lube them up
  9. that shallow water is a good ways from the harbor...a mile or so. good luck. we did good trolling blue and silver stickbaits. but the smaller ones did the best. jr thunder sticks and smithwicks going about 1.9 mph
  10. Last weekend I trolled out of the harbor and east down the shoreline....when you get down a ways there is what looks like a creek and farther east some houses but in particular a brown shed/ house and the water gets really shallow. We picked up a king and a big brown in that area. We also fished the power plant and hit 47 degree water and hooked up on several fish we did best in 16 foot of water...hope this helps [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  11. 2 weeks ago the water was crystal clear. i looked over board as i was sick and could see the bottom in 20 ft of water

  13. thanks guys. the power head was not off. I looked again and cant see it im going to take a quick look before i launch it tomorrow i am trailering it out to utica tonight then oswego tomorrow morning. I appreciate the response i was starting to get concerned. Id like to get the tip back but i guess if it isnt going to do no harm im not to worried.
  14. Exactly what I was thinking. It was just like a christmas story. I'm going to take a real good look tomorrow before I go into work. I didn't know if it could go into the gears or just roll around in there. I wasn't sure because if this was open then water would go in there....I don't know I better just get it out [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  15. I ask this because while working on my outboard I lost the tip to my screw driver and it went into the bowl part of the engine and I can't find it....could it have gone into the gears or drive shaft or is this really no concern . The engine runs but I didn't put it into gear fearing destruction. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  16. got the spoons and fly in the mail today. The spoons look even better in my hand than in the pic online i cant wait to put them on this weekend. thanks again -Eric
  17. you can use 6 to 8 wt rod and reel. i use a 6 wt with floating line and 8lb leader. I use wooly buggers for them. another 2 or 3 weeks ill start hitting streams looking for carp and go get them. cast upstream a few feet and drift it to them they love crayfish
  18. id leave the leadcore at home. guys have been catching them in 10 foot or less water. I long line braid with a 25 foot 10 lb leader
  19. what kind of bag did you have? I have a "drift sock" i think it is called big blue one from gander and mine is 48 inches and it has lasted me a few years. You might have used yours more than me but mine is still in good shape. I herd amish outfitters had a good trolling bag
  20. Didn't make it to oswego but went to olcott and trolled 15 to 25 then to 10 fow into a bit warmer water. Water in the harbor was 41 and 25to 15 was 36 started to head west and finally went into 10 fow water was almost 38 degrees. Hooked a big steel head and the net man lost the fish at the boat. I got sick and we had to call it quits [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  21. That does help give me some options thanks. Is the oswego river the only place to launch or am I going to be launching at the mouth of the river? Also how do I know if the power plant is discharging water without taking a boat ride over ther or is the power plant in the river. How much does it cost to launch at wrights landing [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  22. Im going to drive out and meet my brother inlaw in oswego for a troll. I have never been to oswego and dont really know where to start fishing. Any starting points would be great. Im assuming to start round 15 foot and zigzagging between 15 and 25 heading west pulling stickbaits for browns and maybe putting a baby spin dr on the rigger for a coho. Ill be using my gps so i can mark some spots if we get any fish and we can find our way back to the boat launch. I saw someplace on here about launching at wrights landing...can anyone point me in the right direction to where to launch my boat? Thanks for any help. -Eric
