I just found out the the obit for Capt Bernie Klimczak appears in todays Buffalo news. Bernie was a fixture out of Oak Orchard in the "discovery years" of the late 70's and 80's. He brought experience from the fingerlakes and lake michigan to Lake O and was best known for his Miller spoon programs. He always lent a hand mechanically, and I saw him bail out many a paid mechanic. He operated Oak Orchard charter service at first from a bridged Silverton, and then from a 10 meter Trojan (which I believe is the "Maverick" boat today). He saw the future, as even in the 80's he said we would one day raise our own Chinooks like his friends in Owen sound did. My favorite memory was when he had a glimmer in his eye as he asked me to accompany him in his paddle boat to try and catch Chinooks during the October run. We went 2 for 3 on ping-a-t's. He retired down to Florida several years ago, as he and his late wife had already spent winters down there in the Keys. He will be missed by many.

Fleas

Had some recent inquires regarding rumors swirling around the last 2 Pro-Ams entry deadlines. I delved into it and the deadline has been extended to Monday June 27th, 5pm. You must enter online or make a phone call to 315-349-8260 to make other arrangements. The new "Super Calcutta", which has been fortified by generous sponsors, should return the prestige and camraderie that these hotly contested events were once known for. The prize structure will be boosted by requiring teams to abide by the "No Comm" agreement, which is required to fish for the extra prizes. This will payback considerably more than what will be collected, so most certainly everyone will sign. See you at both events.

Bulkhead/Stringer inspection on a used Penn Yan??
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to MarkNY's topic in This Old Boat
Just some additional info on this subject. The original Penn Yan boat company made some of the most durable fiberglass boats made. Already experts in wooden boats( one of theirs sits proudly in the Adirondack museum), the fiberglass boats built in the finger lakes were made with great pride and craftsmanship. The wood used was quality hardwood through 1983 models. It was shortly after that the company went through several ownership changes and quality and craftsmanship suffered. The boats built through '83 were tough as nails and proven Great lakes workhorses. Any boat, from any manufacturer could develop structural problems if not taken care of or inspected regularly. -
Pro Am Changes???
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Paul Czarnecki's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
The very best choice may be no choice at all, leaving it the way it is, but lets not shoot the messenger. I too, am frustrated with the majority wanting closed comm, past-present-future. I don't know what it will take to re-instate closed comm, but it needs to happen. All of the rules can be beaten or abused if the observer is hung over or sleeping, but by their sheer existence they make an abuser a CHEATER. History shows the fishing world does not tolerate or forgive a person or a team that would screw their peers. It may be a waste of time to take a poll when the "players" opinions or wishes are not considered, but nonetheless this is good debate. The best and fairest choice may be the 2nd one. It has been brought to my attention that in B.A.S.S. and Saltwater tournaments there are no boundries but there is no run time either. Run to "Hot" fish, pay the price. Stay home and grind, gain fishing time. Seems it could add strategy. As I have stated before, my position on all the rules discussions is I am for whatever the majority wants. I want to see GROWTH. -
A Pro Am thought...
Capt Vince Pierleoni posted a topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
In addition to all the great feedback to a fair question, we need to keep in mind angler effort. Tournaments and derbies have become a vital part of the "Angler trips" conducted on the Great Lakes. No apologies needed as long as the fish get consumed. They have already provided recreation and memories before they even get to the weigh-in. After weigh-in, there are now people clamoring for any unwanted fish. People need to keep in mind that the effort needs to be there to justify keeping the program going. Not only do these events produce lots of angler effort and fishing license sales for NYS, they are a tremendous economic "shot in the arm" for the hosting counties. The fish harvested during these events also help out the DEC biologists. They are able to to look at, and get scale samples from, numerous specimens of different species of all sizes and ages. The fish harvested during the Tournys are some of the most justifiable. The "no cull" format has merit and many believe leads to less overall casualties. As for the size minimums, the current size minimum was arrived at when actual discussion and feedback was appreciated and used. It was a compromise taking into account all the different styles and approaches used in the strategy. Also, many anglers communicated it was important to have some fish for weigh in even in a tough bite. -
No Comm Agreement Proposal
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to dreamsteelie's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
The Bottom Line is most rules are created to make things as equitable as possible for contestants. Opening comm creates all kinds of inequity. Should come down to who did their homework, made the right decisions on their own accord, and execution. -
We are trying to bring back the very foundation for which the prestigious Pro-Am was founded. I am very proud of the percentage of voluntary signatures. after both events, regardless of their performance, teams approached me and said "we have more FUN just working within our own team" Exactly. When these events were started, they were touted as being very different from a big fish derby BECAUSE of the No Comm rule. It's a terrible shame to skew the scoreboard in any way because of open comm.

Anyone else feel this way??
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to Richard Bullen's topic in Open Lake Discussion
The Chinook Salmon is the greatest fish that swims, in my opinion. Locating, triggering strikes, and of course the fight. Life changing. The success of the Chinook program in Lake Ontario was no accident. We got a second chance after Man screwed up the Lakes with the seaway. The Great Lakes Pacific Salmon program puts these magnificent fish within reach of anglers who would have never had the chance to be challenged by them. The Pacific Salmon program must always continue and is worth fighting for. -
Too soon to tell where the best bite and for what species between the bar, Olcott, and Pt Breeze. As Spring progresses typically it is better at Olcott or Oak Orchard as the Niagara will start pumping HEAT. Last 2 yrs, late June has been some of the best King fishing out of Olcott. It is hard to imagine the bite being any better than it is right now. They are definitely making up for lost time. It will be a mix of Spinnys with ATOMIK flies, and spoons like DWs if you are after Salmon. Usually 100-300 fow, but of course that can change.

No Comm Agreement Proposal
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to dreamsteelie's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
Thank you "Players". This means ALOT to those of us that remember how it used to be, and were around when the foundation of of this format was NO COMM. I feel like when we are at one of these events we are around "the cream of the crop", and you sportsmen and women certainly proved it. It DID NOT go unnoticed the percentage of Amateur teams that signed. WOW! You guys are gamers! Tip of our hats to you!
