Yeah Tom, if we got unruly in the back seat all he had to do was THREATEN to get his belt off. Still tells stories about how conflicts were settled with fists, or a street race(with those 50's cars!), only a cowardly punk would use a weapon.

So Greg, when my dad hollered "stugots" in traffic, he mean't number 2, right? LOL! Funny how we grew to learn how to use these terms, just by his tone of voice! This ones not as tough, "face' brutta' " Face like a brute. In other words, could stop a clock. So in a tirade, like many we witnessed it went something like this- "Stugots, face' brutta', FANABALA!!!!"

Mike, I have installed several of them. Is your boat Glass or Aluminum? I suggest if it is Glass, mounting the transducer near centerline. Mount it flush with the bottom of the hull, so it is somewhat protected from being destroyed by the many pieces of wood that are floating around out there. You can mount it directly to the transom, or install a transducer block and mount it to that. Caulk the drilled screw holes with 3m 5200. Run the cable through the transom ABOVE the waterline, through an existing access hole if possible. Route the transducer cable in such a way that it wont get cut or pinched. Keep the display up at the helm, out of the weather. If you have difficulties, look for my Blue/Gray GMC pickup at the Point the next week to 10 days, as I am storing there.

Sweet pics Jeremy!

Beautiful Paul! This type of work is going to spare many giant trout that are only harvested for a skin mount. I tell people "you can hang them over a wood-burning fireplace or take them in the shower with you". Family heirlooms that will last.

Too bad this had to take a bad turn. I've had some good chuckles. As for the "stugots" term, I grew up listening to my dad say it. What DOES it mean? I've even used it as (what I think is correct) a derogatory name for someone, like idiot. Help me out here, Dave. Those of you that know me understand I rarely take the "politically correct" position. This being said, do we really have to pick ONE? I will say this, I would rather fish ANY port ALL YEAR if it is connected to Lake Ontario, than any other in the world. If we have to pick just one, I could get behind either the Oak or Oswego, all things considered. Now, if you want to consider the 18miles between Olcott and the Niagara mouth/Youngstown Lewiston stretch, it's not even close. For the purpose of this thread, the Oak or Oswego would represent us well. In our travels up and down the Lake chartering and fishing Tournaments, we have had great times on and off the water at all the ports. We have encountered MIND BLOWING Salmon action some years at Oswego and Sodus. Yes,some years they are not there. So tragic to fall back on "power schools" of 6-8lb BT's. We are so spoiled. If we are gonna use the "8 mile rule", then you gotta go Olcott or Wilson. By the looks of things, a whole lot of people breakin' that 8 mile deal the end of April through early June, when these ports are loaded with transient boats. Why? KINGS. HELLO. I have nothing but great memories from the Oak, but that 8 mile rule mostly applies June through September. Sure is a fishy port though. Great people, great anglers, great history, good support businesses. Love going back there. Yes, Oswego can chew you up and spit you out, but it's definitely a "fishy" port. If you can compete there you can compete anywhere on the Great Lakes. IMO, consistency-wise I would rate Olcott and Wilson second to none. Yes we are lacking in support businesses. Any developer with a vision out there want to turn Olcott-Wilson into one big "Mega Harbor" ?

Mark, For one thing, 2 baits with it only counting as one rod. This is very important to the small boat angler who is limited to the number of rods by law. Although stacking rods still has its proponents, stacking rods can result in tangles when most of your "shots" are coming off the ball(deeper rod). Much better to learn with a simpler approach first.

Prayers requested- Updated 03/28
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to 1fish2fish's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Great news. Prayers continue for your friends complete recovery. -
The observer thing is taking shape like I hoped it would too. People getting involved for THE LOVE OF THE GAME, no more begging or recruiting indifferent chaps who have no desire to hold a rod and sleep all day. We need a camera sponsor now to step up and provide their cameras to the observers for action shots.

Thank you for the kind words guys, and for appreciating simple sportsmanship. I know what it takes, to have everything come together, so I appreciate the game even when we don't do well. I love the camraderie during and after a FAIRLY played event. Thanks to players like you, Tom and Pete, and to too many others to mention, this Tourny thing is starting to shape up like I always hoped it would. As you guys know, I feel Great Lakes Salmon and Trout take a back seat to no other fish when all things are considered.

Andy, you know--"the grass is always greener". The way people drive on 104 and the thruway, I'm not sure what is less stressful! Anyways, you take the sand dunes and bluffs for granted, as well as the the shoreline from the Oak west to Willie. That shoreline west of your port to Ginna is beautiful, but I know, you've seen it a thousand times! I know one thing, it sure is tough to run home after a mindblowing tourny on a Sunday evening, pushing hard so not much of it is in the dark! Oh yeah, and then have to run a trip on a Monday morning! I know you've been there! See you soon.

The right rod for downrigging and flatlining will not make a good diver rod. Check out Okuma's Blue Diamond, Convector, and Classic Pro lines of rods. They have several in the 8'6" lengths, which I prefer also.

Daiwa Sealine or Okuma Convector for Wire set up? THX
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to mdryer's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I used size 30 Okuma convector reels for several seasons for wire with good results. Have run size 30 Okuma Catalinas for a couple seasons now and absolutely love the drag and counters. -
They are great. Tremendous drag, and the high speed retrieve is easy to get used to. I used several of the 55's last year and will find more applications for the 45's this year. They are in the process of introducing a high capacity copper reel for the extreme stuff.

We do it every year and don't push too hard. Cruising we figure on 5hrs from Olcott to Oswego. I have done it solo and with a crew. The slight loss of fuel economy/ speed is well worth the trade for extra eyes and to spell you on watch. It is not an auto pilot type trip, monstrous logs will appear out of nowhere. This being said, it is a wonderful way to experience Lake O and see the varying shoreline beauty. You will want to have enough fuel capacity to make it to the Oak at least, as any other fuel stop will take you way off course. Good Luck!

If you are looking for a fish raiser with fresh engines, this is the real deal. Last derby the boat fished (May 2010), produced 1st place LOC King Salmon. Last tournament fished, cashed a check at the Niagara Pro-Am(June 2010). Proven, Proven, Proven. Never been in saltwater, completely protected shafts and props with full tunnels, drafting only 30inches.

I call it "T.O.ing". Remember when T.O. told Deon Sanders to "getcha popcorn ready" before the big playoff game with the Giants? What he proceeded to do was go out and lay an egg of monstrous proportions. 1 catch, 7yds. The Giants? Kept their mouths shut and went on to win the Super Bowl, despite Dallas being the heavy favorite to do so all season. "T.O.ing" is absolutely prohibited on Team THRILLSEEKER, and there are heavy ramifications for doing so. Dave, very well put, respect any player that puts up 800 smackers. Every team is capable of a big day. I can see with all the new posts, and a new category for Tournaments here on LOU, that IT'S ON!!!!! Kev, great to see that you finally finalized with OKUMA. They are committed to ever improving products and are taking notice to our special needs here on the Great Lakes. They have a sharp eye for value in marketing so Kudos to you for landing them.

Happy B-day Jeremy!

I have used Fish Hawk products for many years. The new x-4 is an improvement over what I felt was a great product before. Solid and trouble free. The new probes battery life is incredible.

Lake Ontario Bait situation?
Capt Vince Pierleoni replied to jimski2's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Absolutely Jimski. The challenge is greater fishing for Chinooks in Lake Ontario than the other Great Lakes. In many locations around the lake the density of alewives is so great that you have to clean off your hooks. A recent phenomenon is being experienced at times in recent years where the Chinooks feed on the deeper smelt, even though it is colder down there and large numbers of alewives are present in their so called "preferred" temps. They have choices, and their movements are not always dictated by bait presence. -
Welcome Toad. Thanks for bringing him onboard, Glen. Oh, and it never hurts that we see "eye to eye" on this issue.
