There are guys on here that are pier experts that can help you out. When I fished those piers in the late 70's/early 80's, this time of year it was 10lb test with ballbearing swivel using varying colors of 2/5 oz cleo's and white or chartreuse roostertails. The water is still cold so a slow retrieve prob best. Despite the cool weather, early AM still the best. I am seeing pier jockeys on those piers and the Olcott piers. Chances for Browns and dropback Steelies.

I can vouch for the new tilted element transducers. Answer to our prayers. Picture a flush "eye" looking down from the bottom of your hull. Can be ordered in many angles to fit your hull and mounting location. Besides easy installation and doing away with a fairing block, you will no longer have a protrusion causing drag. I will be installing a second one next week.

Yes that is correct. I havent tried it,(running the probe on the opposite side of the 'ducer) but users have said the ducer is very wide-coned and forgiving. Just makes sense to mount it closer to where it will be reading. Also, in a smaller boat, it will be more stable and less turbulent down deeper on the transom when shes rocking.

In most Aluminum hulls, the drain hole is dead center at the bottom of the transom. If you don't already have a transducer block on your transom you should consider one. Your helm area mounting challenges are a common one on aluminum boats. Although the readout isn't touted as waterproof, it disconnects in seconds from the base. Your idea of mounting it on a ram sounds reasonable.

Well put Mark. In addition, once Man built the seaway and let ALL the exotics in, all bets were off. I personally feel very strongly that the wild success of the Pacific Salmon fishery in the Great Lakes is "Divine intervention." We get a second chance to use the wonderful wonders of the world for recreation and food. The only way to control the exotic Alewives that inhale the hatch of native species like Perch, Walleye, and Lake trout is with good populations of Salmon. Kings and Cohos are the solution, never the problem. Gambler is right though. This must be watched, as there are lots of things going on that defy Sportsmen and reasonable thought.

Mike, I have installed several of them. Is your boat Glass or Aluminum? I suggest if it is Glass, mounting the transducer near centerline. Mount it flush with the bottom of the hull, so it is somewhat protected from being destroyed by the many pieces of wood that are floating around out there. You can mount it directly to the transom, or install a transducer block and mount it to that. Caulk the drilled screw holes with 3m 5200. Run the cable through the transom ABOVE the waterline, through an existing access hole if possible. Route the transducer cable in such a way that it wont get cut or pinched. Keep the display up at the helm,out of the weather. If you have difficulties, look for my Blue/Gray GMC pickup at the Point the next week to 10 days, as I am storing there.

Beautiful Paul! This type of work is going to spare many giant trout that are only harvested for a skin mount. I tell people "you can hang them over a wood-burning fireplace or take them in the shower with you". Family heirlooms that will last.

Give us some details, did some circumstances change? HUGE difference in Sea keeping ability between a 21' and a 26'. If you can afford the overhead, go back to what you were used to.

Those of you that know me understand I rarely take the "politically correct" position. This being said, do we really have to pick ONE? I will say this, I would rather fish ANY port ALL YEAR if it is connected to Lake Ontario, than any other in the world. If we have to pick just one, I could get behind either the Oak or Oswego, all things considered. Now, if you want to consider the 18miles between Olcott and the Niagara mouth/Youngstown Lewiston stretch, it's not even close. For the purpose of this thread, the Oak or Oswego would represent us well. In our travels up and down the Lake chartering and fishing Tournaments, we have had great times on and off the water at all the ports. We have encountered MIND BLOWING Salmon action some years at Oswego and Sodus. Yes,some years they are not there. So tragic to fall back on "power schools" of 6-8lb BT's. We are so spoiled. If we are gonna use the "8 mile rule", then you gotta go Olcott or Wilson. By the looks of things, a whole lot of people breakin' that 8 mile deal the end of April through early June, when these ports are loaded with transient boats. Why? KINGS. HELLO. I have nothing but great memories from the Oak, but that 8 mile rule mostly applies June through September. Sure is a fishy port though. Great people, great anglers, great history, good support businesses. Love going back there. Yes, Oswego can chew you up and spit you out, but it's definitely a "fishy" port. If you can compete there you can compete anywhere on the Great Lakes. IMO, consistency-wise I would rate Olcott and Wilson second to none. Yes we are lacking in support businesses. Any developer with a vision out there want to turn Olcott-Wilson into one big "Mega Harbor" ?

Mark, For one thing, 2 baits with it only counting as one rod. This is very important to the small boat angler who is limited to the number of rods by law. Although stacking rods still has its proponents, stacking rods can result in tangles when most of your "shots" are coming off the ball(deeper rod). Much better to learn with a simpler approach first.

A full- blown effort, like everything else I've seen associated with this event. It is worthy and we will purchase.
