Heading out in a few. Been a tough month. Last dog was Feb 17 and last 23 sets have came up empty. Although I can blame 3 misses on trying to get buddies a coyote. Playing "guide" is tough sometimes.

  2. About 10 pages back I remember a lot of questions about NV vs Thermal and types of NV. At the time I recommend digital NV and particularly the Sellmark photon. Here is an example of what you can expect from a $600 photon rt 4.5-9x42. Recording is from built in on board recording using a $40 aftermarket 850 ir.

  3. Did a quick solo set. Had a first... 35min in to a yote set (yips, howls, pup distress) a fox came barreling across the field. With pup distress blaring and eyes coming I thought it was on, till I saw big red in the scope.... Ah well. At least I saw eyes
Have had that twice this year. Once with a fox in early November and once last week. Hero fox coming to the rescue I guess. Did 2 sets last night. 1st set a pack lit up as soon as I hit the first howl. Of course they were right behind the house I just parked at and I'm sure found my scent and foot prints minutes later. Next set I had nothing for 40 minutes and then 3 separate dogs sound off when I shut down pup distress. Another 20 minutes and nothing. I would have cut the distance and reset but that crunchy snow had me stuck where I was. I'll get them next time.

  4. Got ya, yea I read in the instructions that the touch button cancels the dimming mode. I haven’t made my mind up at what I’m going to do. I’ve never had enough time to be dimming the gun light to a lower position, lights on bingo!! But I never had a gun light either, always someone lighting for me or vise verse. See how it goes.
Biggest thing is just making the transition from scan light to shooting light without taking a light off the dog. Messing up that transition is a sure fire way to send them running.

  5. I have a question, I bought a night vision scope, gen1 I never got it mounted and the ir iluminator quit, I tried all different things to see if it would come on to no avail. So I see wicked lights makes an ir illuminator. Would this make the night vision scope much better! The scope has just a little one mounted on top the scope. I know it’s old but it did work. Or should I just pension the scope. What are your thought of putting a much better ir light on it or will it white wash the scope. Thanks for any input. Kinda bummed out!!
Yes an after market ir light will make it clearer than the stock light ever could. You can buy an ir led for your wicked light for $29

  6. Well my wicked lights came yesterday and I couldn't be happier. Using the light and batteries right out of the box was amazing. Now I have to mount the gun light, and adjust the light to the cross hairs. Last 2 nights were perfect, no wind dead calm. Well hopefully it will give a few more before this damn snow. Here's a few pics of what I got.20180228_093653.thumb.jpg.242b0cc7bd462332f62c007aec22f1ef.jpg

  7. It's so much fun !!! When u deer hunt they chatter , bark followed with a cry. I can't stand it . Yet they grow enough balls to climb up the tree 2 feet from u and continue until he feels victory !! Haha I got my revenge today !!! On a good note it's good practice shooting , walking the hills and trying to get a clear and steady shot with good placement . Some shots can be far. Ever since I got my 17 I feel like a little kid again . Best gun to shoot hands down . Can't even knock over a empty beer can. That's fast.

  8. Oh ya! Great mount for sure . Wish there were more Gray's to chase around here in the lake plains now days. 40 years ago there was one behind every bush , now a day only see tracks once in a while. Back then when we chased them they would run around in little circles like a bunney , lots a fun to run !

I've seen vids of them just running in circles after a shot lol. We just don't see many in my spots. I've killed 2 now compared to piles of reds in Niagara county and almost never see them, but I've got friends who kill a few every year in their spots not far away from where I hunt. The guys down around Binghamton pile them up like nothing. Guess you just need the right habitat and we probably screwed it all up.

  9. East wind tonight. I've got a few spots that I've been waiting for this wind. Figures I just finished 3 doubles at work, I'm on the edge of pneumonia and I've got to go back for 3 more doubles starting sat am. Good chance I'm out there coughing or not tonight. F it.

  10. Uncle, back again. Drove to Ann Arbor Michigan and back today to watch my kid play lax. Long day, turning off the alarm, turning it back on at 2. Hopefully it’s full and gone soon.

If I had that set up behind my house I'd lose my job from lack of sleep. Lol. Good luck after 2.

  11. Still some time left. Would have loved to have put hands on the black one we missed.
Alarm just went off again. Fox, letting them go unless it keeps coming out lol.

Might want to let it go period since it closed 3 days ago. Lmao. Good luck. March is my favorite month. Looking foward to it.

  12. Six of our 8 have had good pelts. 3 or 4 have had great coats. Alarm just went off. Had eyes but no clean shot. Maybe it will come back.

I wish I could say the same. My early foxes were amazing but the later ones were pretty messed up, just wool for the most part with lots of patchy spots. Still put up 10 of 16 killed. The fur buyer didn't want any of the 8 I had at the contest (I hate skinning them after 2 days) but I put up 2 of the 8 that still had decent fur in my mind. Of the 13 yotes I've got down this year only 6 were worth doing. Hopefully I can find some good ones before the end because there's lots of room in my 2nd mailing box heading to mink and moyle.

  13. Rubbing sucks too. Makes pelts worthless.

Pelts aren't great this year. Fur buyer at Foxpro event said it's from the extreme cold and snow, all the guard hairs freezing into the snow when they lay down. I had 7 reds and a grey and a yote from those 2 nights and every one was patchy and missing much of the long hairs. Nothing but wool. It's too bad because they were amazing Nov and Dec but I haven't had great luck since.

  14. Did 3 sets last night after 10 when the wind died. First set I saw 3 dogs, first 2 running about 800 yards off and never came to play and the third crossed my field about 500 off toward the end of the set and showed zero interest in anything my fox pro had to say. Plenty of dogs but I have a feeling somebody has been pushing buttons on their e caller out that way. 2nd set was empty so I decided to hit a spot on the way home I've taken 3 dogs from this year but all 3 had mange. Right from the first howl I had a dog responding to me off to the north. I called sparingly for about 35 minutes with him responding each time I mad a noise with the fox pro. Finally I said f-it and set off pup distress and pup screams at the same time with the fusion. Sure enough he came screaming in from the north and was heading downwind. He slowed up on his own and I dropped him at about 180 before he winded me. Sure enough I walk up to a demon looking low 20lb dog with zero fur from his hips back and not much anywhere else. No thanks. He's still out there.

  15. Yellow jacket, Dogs like to use power lines as travel corridors. If you can’t see far due to age of cut, try elevating up in a climber.
Wood lots around those power lines are always $$$$$$$$$

  16. In my opinion yes. They are running for sure.
Great time of the year to get on them.

Agreed. Guys running dogs will tell you the same. All of a sudden they'll start killing multiple males out of 1 wood block in a weekend. All of them chasing the same hot female. Amazing how the switch flips and all of the sudden they can't resist a howl.

  17. I have a couple questions if someone is willing to help a rookie out. First, i read all the time how guys will do x number of sets in a night. How long do you stay in a set with no activity before you move? When you move to the next set, how far is it from your last set? Secondly, with it being breeding season, is there one or two things I could focus on to increase my odds? Lastly, I've been told that they like to make dens in the piles of tree tops after a property has been logged. Is this true? I'm hunting our property in Central Pa that is approximately 400 acres which is all timber. A little over a year ago we had about 40 acres timbered off and it's littered with tops.
Thanks for any help and I absolutely love this site, seems like a great group of people!

Often while strictly targeting coyotes my sets will be as long as 45 minutes this time of year and even longer if something leads me to believe I have a dog interested. Early season sets will be much shorter. As short as 15 minutes on a small wood lot "fox spot" and maybe 25 minutes when targeting larger areas I know hold yotes. March is by far my favorite month to call. I almost exclusively use coyote vocals with lots of single female howls with long gaps of silence in between. Your spot could very likely be 1 set, it may be something where u could do multiple sets. It all depends on how it's set up. Is it surrounded by fields? Is it something you can only target in certain winds? Is there open land in the center somewhere? Do you plan on hunting in the actual timber? When I say I did 7 sets last night I mean 7 different properties, run and gun, get back in the truck and move to the next and out of almost 100 different properties we have to hunt most of them only get hit 1 or 2 times the whole season. New spots and dogs that haven't played the game and aren't constantly harassed certainly make the job easier.
