  1. BILL GO WITH SIZE 18, THEY WORK GREAT. i USE TWO RIGS ONE WITH DOUBLE 18S AND A SMALL BELL SINKER WHEN THEY ARE HITTING GOOD. THE OTHER IS A DOUBLE MARMOOSKA JIGS IN SIZE 18-20 AND A SMALL ICE BUSTER BOBBER. ALL TIPPED WITH SPIKE.
  2. Df I managed around 250. I stayed until 11:30. I did not know you spilled ur bait, you could of used mine. I cant believe you stayed out there with what you had on, you had to be freezing next time I will bring my 4 man tent and you can come inside. It was real nice to meet you and I look forward to fishing with ya again. Maybe we can try to jig up some of them lakers. Were do you live, I am in hamlin. I will talk to ya later bud
  3. Was on onieda once and got to fish in a micro-burst. Nothing MICRO about it!!! Give ya the short story>>>>> In fish trap calm and sunny, temp 35 and on the rise. Middle of the lake with around 300 guys on ice. Trucks, ATVs, houses galore. Noticed wind picking up to around 10-15 in seconds. Heard what sounded like a train running down the ice. Then I heard the empty five gallon bucket bouncing down the lake. Asked my buddy what the hell was going on out there. The sound of velcro opening up the window and him sayin HOLY $HI^ Hang the #$@%$ ON!!!! Train gets louder and all hell breaks loose. The wind cranked up to around 60-70 miles an hour and flipped us over like a garbage bag. Minnows and fish all over and ice gear cranking down the lake. I watched as a S-10, yes a chevy went sliding by me at just 10 feet. I gabbed what I could and placed my right leg into a ice hole and started to say a prayer that I came up with at that moment. I watched grown men that could not get there footing slide by along with there gear. Guys and girls screaming at the top of there lungs for help but nothing that anyone could do. The Burst left as fast as it came and all was calm again. It looked unreal , Gear was left miles away down the lake. I lost my shelter and buckets with my catch and bait, and everything that was in the tent. But I lived when I seriously felt that this was it!!! I was 22 years old when that happened. The chevy was no closer than 600-800 yards away from the spot that it was parked when the storm hit, and the funny part was that the guy who owned it was in it taking a nap when the storm hit. He came to a rest and wiped his ass and picked up all the gear that he could find and drove back to us. It was a scary but a once in a lifetime event, I hope for me!!! That was in 1998 I think. Maybe some of you guys were out there. Oh and last note, the weather guys had clocked the wind at 77 miles per hour during that "MICRO" burst.
  4. Hey slimyfish, cheetoes has a new flavor out called jalepino and cheddar crunchy cheeze doodles. They have the right amount of spice. I take em and put em in a blender and make a fine crumb out of em and add a breading called "House Autry" seafood breader. You can get it at tops. Mix both breadings half and half and shake fish in gallon zip lock and let sit for 5 mins, and fry at 375 untill golden brown You dont need any egg just the breading. The House Autry is formulated to stick. This is a unreal and delicious recipe that I discovered one day when I ran out of breading. Goes great with a ice cold COORS LIGHT
  5. Bill I have tried all over the lake and in all depths, they are there I can see em on the camera and electronics but they dont eat. If you google ice fishing for smelt most guys are fishing in the day and crushing them. Dont know why they dont eat in big numbers during day. I know all the plankton and other little creatures release from bottom as it gets dark. My light is loaded with plankton within a hour of set up but the smelt at the light dont eat. I think they are full already. I catch them below the light like crazy. You have got to go it is a blast and they are unreal to eat Deaf Fisherman the reason that you may have not got them may be because they were filled up with plankton. Cant take much to fill the little guys. Let me know when you can go and I will meet up with ya. Im thinking about going monday night. I get there before dark and fish for trout for the last hour and then fish the smelt till around 9:00-or 10:00.
  6. DF you can pick up some fly hooks at gander Mtn, it will say on pack the size. You will spend about 6.00 bucks on 25 hooks. I also use one rod with size 18 hooks and one rod with the tiny marmooska jigs. Those tiny hooks take some time to get use to but he is rite the smelt just fall off most of the time or if you just pinch them behind the gill plate the mouth opens up and the hook comes rite out. I use a 30 inch mml rod with 8 pound fire line and a 8 pound floro leader for the lakers. Place a good bearing swivel at the end of the fire line and a 18-20 inch floro leader to lure. You can feel those lakers in 80 FOW on bottom like they are in 10 FOW when they hit and you get a great hook set. The rainbows have been traveling a few feet under the ice for me. I have been fishing the little points that stick out and placing tip ups in 10-50 FOW and most of my fish are coming in close. Hope this helps buddy and still hope we can meet up and fish soon. Good luck and good fishing.
  7. DF thats great. You were at Canadice I take it. Were you fishing in front of the launch or doen the lake more. I was there the other night and did well on the smelt. The smelt were biting down deep. They were all over the light but they were not hungry.
  8. I had a ghost once. I just acted real crazy and he went away
  9. Good fishing for smelt last night with my dad. We kept a few hundred. All fish caught on tiny marmooska jigs with a spike. 25 FOW and the green light was the trick with a faint glow. Fished from dark to 12:00. Wind picked up and for saftey we decided to go.
  10. Dont know what you have for gear but you should start with the basics and go from there. Start with a couple rods 18-24''. One with light action with 3 pound trilene ice and one with 6 pound. You can add a set of tip ups or tip downs to the mix also. I know when I started it was all about the big fish like pike and trout. As I got older, 16, it changed to panfish for me. Nice to catch some big ones now and then You need a hand auger like a mora or a lazer, a five or 6 gallon bucket, ice scoop and a a modest selection of panfish jigs and some jigging spoons. I like the line from Dave Genz like the fat boys and Genz worms. Also Marmooska jigs and gill pills and diamonds jigs from custom jigs and spins. They all go good with a waxworm or spike or plastic. Jigging spoons like the swedish pimple and castmaster are great jigging spoons for trout and perch. Shelters are great to have but are not needed, but if your wallet can handle it a great starter is the fish trap scout by dave Genz. Im sure you have seen them, the blue ice houses out there. The scout is a one man and a flip style shelter. You can custom the inside to your needs and fit all your gear in the tub. They also drag easily over the ice and snow. BOoTS BOOTS BOOTS!!!!! you need good footwear and good headwear. You can go to any body of hard water and find the most interesting and creative headwear that exists. The ice anglers have the warmest hats known to man. I have a buddy that wears a fur hat made from a full coyote skin. When I first saw it I wanted to beat him over the head with my ice auger to free him from the attack But the point is that it is warm. Boots should be warm and waterproof. You see lots of guys wearing the rubber knee boots in the 1500 to 2000 thinsulate. They are a hunting boot but great for ice fishing. You will encounter slush and water and your feet will stay warm and dry. As far as were to go I would say that you are new to it then go were the people are. Watch and ask questions most guys are happy to answer and give advice. And as far as what to fish for thats up to you. You will fall in love with some kind species. I love perch, walleye and crappie. They are all top notch when it comes to eating. I hope this helps you and if you have and Qs just ask me or any other guy on this site and im sure it will get a response with more than you need Good luck and good fishing.

    Honeoye

Same here, A marmasooka with a #16 hook with a waxworm pushed over the jig. Take a tooth pick and turn the waxworm inside out before you place it on the hook. The camera does not lie, IT WORKS!!!

    Honeoye

Honeoye has been good in the evening. The last hour before dark at the trident has produced good numbers of gills and some walleye. The fish are there you have to work for them.
  13. DF go to boat launch, walk out to the left about 80 yards down and 50-60 yards from shore. Thats were I got em in 25 FOW. Look for the cluster of holes and were a fish house was, thats me. You can get em all around that lake. Dont think it matters much but 25 FOW seems good. I had a sub light that goes down the hole and after dark I cant keep them off the line. I used a tiny marmooska jig with half a spike x2 rig. It was the first time I have done it and what a blast!!! If your like me you will be hooked. I work 3-11 and 4-2 wheel, but if you ever want to meet up there I would be glad to fish with ya. Lots of guys out there having fun. Hope you do well, any Qs let me know. Good fishing!!!

  21. I have sets ready to go. $75 for a set of 5. Thats five bases and 5 rods. These TIP DOWNS are the ultimate for perch, crappie and walleye. They have a balance system that you can tune to make them as sensitive as you want for those light biters. They come in neon green and flo-orange tips. The craftsmanship and quality is top of the line. They come with HT reels and ready to fish with STREN blood red #6 line. The line makes it great to see on the ice and keeps you from getting all tangled up. Stop watching all those guys with tip downs out fish you and get your own!!! This is first come first serve. I have 10 sets ready to go and they will go fast again. I am located in Hamlin, Shipping available. THEY ARE LIMITED FOR THE SEASON. I DONT KNOW HOW MANY SETS I WILL MAKE THIS YEAR, I DO KNOW THAT I WILL NOT MAKE THEM THIS WINTER. I WILL PRODUCE THEM UNTIL BOW SEASON THEN I WILL BE DONE FOR THE YEAR SO WHAT I HAVE MADE BY THEN WILL BE IT. ITS NOT TO EARLY TO BE READY FOR THE HARD WATER!!! Shipping available add $15.00 Jim 585-490-4246
  22. Me and my son fished on braddocks out of the state loop. We started at around 3:00 pm and fished till dark. The start was slow but around 4:30 the perch came in good and we put 34 in the bucket fast. 9 1/2 s to 12 inchers. most around 10 inches. We could not catch one jigging. All fish came of tip downs and minnows and when they started it was a blast. My son would catch em and I would re-bait the lines. We had a good system going and it kept us warm. Few guys left out there piken it up but couldnt tell if anyone was catchin. Good fishing to all!!
  23. My buddy has went to this place three times this winter and him and his buddy have limited out every time. Nice perch too!!! I am planning on a trip next week for 2 days and going to spend the night out on the ice. Have any of you guys fished it this year or last. I have fished goose bay and done good in the past but never Chippewa.
