I been wearing earplugs that let you hear normally but block out loud noises. They work pretty good but when you have a hat on it drives you nuts every time you move your head They are about 15 dollars. I use them crow hunting a lot now too.

LMAO W.W.IV! Rochester is a scary Place I'm a big hunter and fishermen! I feel completely safe doing both. There are a lot of idiots out there but it is what it is. And if something happens to me, Well then Sh*t just happens All you can do is be safe and make sure the people you are with do the same. I hate hearing about how this person or that person got injured in a hunting accident but an hunting accident is an accident! Its avoidable but still its an accident. Just be safe out there but enjoy your self. YOu only live once

I love mine. I got it last year after christmas and I could not hit the broad side of a barn with it. The day before opening I sat down with it and got it dialed in. As a final test I walked a water bottle out a 187 paces and nailed 3 times. I told my self I was ready This buck I took at 40 yards and dropped him in his tracks. It was a good feeling to see him drop. I am only carying my pistol or I would not try and use it. Also, I cary shooting sticks. Hard to hold this gun steady with the long barrel. I almost forgot but I almost dropped my gun after I shot him. That gun is so loud I could not hear very much out of my left ear after that for a little while. I wear ear protecting now in the field

Downrigger trolling newbie.. any help?
rshubuck replied to bulletbob's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Bulletbob. I don't want to scare you out of trolling cause of price. You can have a lot of fun just using your two downriggers. It just gets addictive and I found my self buying this and that. I would have 2 to 3 guys on the boat with me this summer and we just pounded the fish! I would say your looking at around 120 dollars for both downrigging rod setups. Then you just need your tackle. Its all about how much you want to spend on it. Really a few different spoons, spindoctors and flys will have you covered. Spoons $5 piece, Spindoctors $11-13 and flys $5-7. I use Blacks downrigger releases. I personally prefer them over others. They are about $10 a peice. Read the weekly fishing reports for where the fish are and you will have it made. If you really do get into trolling. I highly recomend you purchasing two wire rods. One for each side running dispy divers. One rod setup your looking at $130 new. I can't stress how successful I have been with these rods. And if you wand to get even more copper and lead core setups also are champs. I put my boat up for the winter but around March or April I will have it back on the water. I am very willing to take you out and show you my setup. -
Downrigger trolling newbie.. any help?
rshubuck replied to bulletbob's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
There is a real good post by ATomMik a few months ago that explains a lot about how he sets up. Search for it. It will help a lot. As far as equipment goes, I suggest getting a depth raider for your boat. They are expensive but worth it. GPS with good mapping software is great too. I use Okuma GLT 8'6" downrigging rods match with the okuma 45x magna pro reels. I prefer to have the okuma convectors but too expensive for me. Diawa also has great reels and rods. I use 30lb mono line with flurocarbon leaders. Lures- I switch up a lot. Stinger spoons are my favorite. Scorpion size i use more of. Chicken wing, steelie stomper, wonderbread are my top picks. Switch up often to what works. Buy more then one because if it works you want to be able to switch your setups to it. Also, I use 8" SpinDoctors with AtomMik or Big Weenie flys. My absolute go to is mountaindew spindoctor paired with big weenie proctoligist fly. Downriggers are great but you should consider buying two wire rod setups. I catch probably 70% of my fish on these rods. They are a pain it the butt!!! Magnum dipsy diver and your favorite lure. You can't keep them in the water. This is epensive sport. Make your christmas list. -
Thats a good sacrifice to the fish Gods! You should have caught a monster after that one.

YOUR A CRAZY SOB! That rain was coming down! Still beats sitting at work I guess. You did good thought. WTG!

Thanks all. I took the soft top off for travel. When I took my trip to ontario it ripped on the corner and its starting to get worse. I think its time to replace it. Corey, you right! There is way to many things we can do this time of year but just not enough time to do it

I had no intentions on going back out trolling this year but we went fishing on Salmon river the day before with some luck only catching 2 kings. Steve and Paul convinced me for one last trip to Cayuga and I'm glad they talked me into it We launched at cast park and trolled the south end shore lines around 60fow to 120fow. We target the browns mainly for our first time ever. Used all scorpion stinger spoons on everything. 2dipsys, 2 riggers and 1 ten color lead core. We hooked up right away with 3lb 8oz Brown I was in aww I ask my self could it be I'm just that lucky? First time fishing for Browns and not even ten minutes in and had one in the box. Well we kept fishing and landed a ton of dink salmon and dink lakers. All had no problem swimming back down except for one deep hooked laker BUT after circling to hit the same area where we caught the brown here came what I heard was nesting in the area. Yep it was a Bald Eagle hungry for some lake trout. It hovered for a bit and flew down and picked up the laker like it was nothing and flew off with it. That just made my day. Earlier in the year Steve and I saw another bald eagle on the south end of Seneca lake. I love seeing them. Back to the report. I mananged to catch another brown weighing in at 4lbs on the magdipsy 3 setting 150 ft out. 9ft of 17lb flurocarbon. Chicken wing spoon Around noon everything shutdown and we stopped catching the dinks and decided to call it for the year Weather was not bad. It poored off and on and the wind came up off and on out of the south. Weeds were bad everytime the wind picked up but they weren't too bad over all. Time to let the fish reproduce and do some more trib fishing for the Kings up north! Also, I'm a big bow hunter so I'm probably not going to do much fishing when that starts. I had a great time this year and got to meet a lot of you Lou Members. Thanks for all the help and I hope to see all of you all in the spring.

A-TOM-MIK Success & Techniques Explained
rshubuck replied to A-TOM-MIK's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Thanks Tom! Great post! Lots of good info that I have repeated and brought me a lot of success this year! I only have one copper rod and always use it down the chute Now you got me thinking about running it on the big boards Thanks again! Rob -

Welcome Rob! Lots of info here and a bunch of great guys! I love Lowrance HDS units. I have HDS 7 with the Navoconics Platium chip and love it. If I can afford it I would have a HDS chartplotter running all my GPS stuff and another unit running the sonar unit. Two seperate units is the way to go if you can afford it. A lot of guys like the RayMarine electronics, but I don't know much about it other then a lot of big water guys on the ocean use it. Downriggers are probably one of the easiest ways to fish trolling. I like to run my dipsy off the sides of my boat and have 3 downriggers off the back. I run Spindoctors flashers/flys usually 10 to 15ft off the ball. I also run spoons but usually give spoons more of a lead. My start of the progam is to cover ten ft of depth where I believe the fish are. So depending on temps I will set one rigger at 50 ft another 60ft and the last one at 70ft. My dipsys will either be somewhere in between or I will continue by going deeper 80ft and 90ft. I go by temps and what I am targetting. When one rod starts producing then I will move one or two rods to the same depth. Good luck! Rob

Thats is how I do mine!

Talked to my wife! It turns out she did boil them! Big O I like that setup. Thanks for sharing and putting in so much detail in it. I'm going to have to give it a try some time. I don't do the hairrigs. I mold the cornballs into the hook leaving the eye and hook point exposed but I like trying new things.
