  1. Thank-you to all that have replied with incite into this type of endeavour. I am very familiar with the ups and downs of business life and the headaches and hassles that can come with it. I'm not trying to imply that I know everything its just that I have operated my own business for 11yrs and and have learned a thing or to about staying a float.no punn intended. I also have competition in my business and I am actually one of the more expensive companies in my industry and I continue to work for my accounts in spite of the "cheaper guys." My customers have learned to trust me and my quality and they also know that ya get what ya pay for. I have never and will never be the "cheap guy" cause in the long run it only hurts myself as well as the industry. I honestly have more to learn before I would consider doing this but I am strongly considering it and my wife thinks " I need to go for it." I know its not all sunshine out there but I am used to putting in more than is noticed by customers or even my friends for that matter. Just looking into it at this point. Thanks for the input and looking forward to hearing from others on this topic [ Post made via Android ]
  2. i own and operate my own small business now and make decent money doing it. i have no employees to avoid the headaches of the slow seasons and the drama that can come along with employees. My schedule is pretty flexible. Looking to just start out slow and small and feel my way into. I currently know many river guides and charter captains that are very against the new guys and the part timers but how else do u become a full timer. ya gotta start somewhere! By cost analysis what do i need to include? Fuel, tackle, insurance, advertisement costs etc... what else am i missing? im sure alot! Again this is not something im gonna do over nite but make no mistake im gonna do it one way or another. Dont mean to sound cocky or arrogant im just determined to do something more fun with the second half of my life.
  3. What do you have to do to start recording water time. Is it a some kind of official documentation or maybe just some kind of personal journal? How many weeks are the classes for? Becoming a charter for me would not be to a small fortune as much as it would be to actually and finally do something I love! [ Post made via Android ]
  4. breathable base layers next to the skin. then from there layers and lots of them. u can always take it off, but if ya dont have them on to begin with it gets cold and fast. nothing will make for a short fishing trip more than getting freezing cold in 35deg water. and its only gonna get colder. and bring extra gloves so that one pair gets wet(which they will) ya have back up pairs. a good hand warmer muff with hot hands packets is priceless on the water. hope that helps. trial and error has worked for me but i only live 15 min so heading home is no big deal.
  5. yup, but not a ton yet but they are on their way. salmon river and oswego river are loaded with them. dexter does have fish though
  6. set release so that they trip at 10lbs of pull and sharpen the hooks regularly. as far as the hook set most will be done by the tension on the release but salmon this time of year have harder mouths than normal so i give it a little pop after reeling in the slack as fast as i can. we very rarely lose fish that hit the riggers. as far as dipseys go lose the snubbers and beef up your leader. the biggest thing is getting to the rods that fire as fast as possible and start the tension quick
  7. by the way davey jones and pig pen flasher have been hot in the sun with big fin atommik fly and if its cloudy hammer time and white with green dot spinnys with shredded hammer and crinckle green glo atommik flys have taken alot of beasts as well. 22-24in leaders on the flies. a jplug or two is a good idea this time of year as well. get one that glows for low light times and the bloody nose jplug is a great choice for sunny times. good luck
  8. i agree with g-daddy. going on one charter or even going out with someone who has it figured out is well worth the money and time. there is alot to learn and at this point in the season your behind the eight ball. this is my second season trolling and last year i started by going out with a well known charter just as an observer and wow did that help. just watching how they rig why they rig and where they rig helped me put alot of fish in my boat this season. the fish this time of year are staging to head up the rivers so i would start looking in 100 feet of water or less. the one thing ill tell you from my limited knowledge at this point is a temperature probe is worth every penny you pay for it. in fact id rather fish without a fish finder than without my probe. the sharks like to be in 42-58degree water and if your lure arent in those temps it can be very boring. dont give up. read, listen and ask questions and when the first fish hits the deck you will never look back youll be hooked. its alot of money and work but is very rewarding when you start hitting fish
  9. i believe its a strip of herring wrapped around the fly under the skirt and fished as usual behind various flashers. adds a little scent to the mix can sometimes help and hinder just depends on the day
  10. casting for browns in the spring definitely can be action packed at times. get the right winds and the are right on shore within easy reach. i like to use a ten foot ultra light rod with six pound test so ya can really fire it to deeper water. change up the speed till ya find what they want. chrome and blaze orange cleo has been my favorite over the years but chrome and blue takes alot of fish also, id have both if i were you.
  11. both clear mono main line and flouro leader is the way to go. just my opinion
  12. ya i just run 30# all year then just change leaders as the season and fishing changes. the only exception is early in the spring for browns. at that point the lighter the better in my opinion and i use 6lbs on ultra light spinning rods. it makes the fight a lot more fun also.
  13. weather definitely sucks, but what are ya gonna do. i used the time today to work around the house and get things done like that. as the saying goes a happy wife is a happy life. so im using this sucky weather to make my wife happy so when its nice i can load and go and she will be happy also. Thing is she loves to fish and has gotten to be very good with a pole, hahaha, and its a great way for me to spend time with her and fish at the same time. but make no mistake teaching her to fish is a double edge sword. cause now if i go guess who wants to go also, opps. but yes i will be getting the bow gear out myself and checkin trail camera pics if this keeps up. i wonder where the fish are gonna be after the wind settles? what gonna happen to temp? it aint gonna be pretty im sure
  14. I also have the bird 788ci and love it. $700 isnt to bad for what you get between the product and the customer service. i was one of the guys that got a bad transducer, and it took me two trips out to figure out that was the problem. I was out one day and everybody around me was marking and talking about all the bait in the area but i saw nothing but a very poor description of the bottom on my screen. i thought i was just missing everything that they were seeing. the next trip made me realize i had an issue. i thought that i maybe had my settings wrong on my system, but i didnt. A guy told me that when i pulled my boat out of the water i should be able to hear and feel the pings comin from the transducer. should sound like a little clickin noise. and of course there was nothing to be heard or felt. ah the problem. bad transducer. took off the bad one and went to bass pro where i got it, they plugged it in and tested it and sure enough there were no pings comin from it at all. no pings means no fishfinding! bass pro traded it for new one no questions asked. They did say be extremely carefull not to bang or hit new transducer at all during instalation or use. there is a fragile crystal in there that can be damaged and if it is damaged be prepared for frustration. otherwise great unit with many upgrade options available. great choice as far as im concerned
  15. im new to the game of trolling for salmon, and im not claimin to know it all but i caught fish fri, sat and sun. fish were in 90 feet of water with there bellies on the bottom then as the sun dropped in the evening bam caught fish. i guess just right place at the right time, but ill take it.
  16. i am a green horn when it comes to trolling for salmon and trout on the big water of lake ontario and would love to know what temp and speed gauge people think is best. I have been out on my new boat 4 times now trolling right with the pack of guys outside the front door of oswego harbor and have yet to hit a fish. i know there are a ton of variables that contribute to being successfull, but i found out how important speed and temp at the ball is. I went out with a guy on his boat early in the am thursday till noon. we pounded fish. he had all the tools of the trade. i went out in the evening that same day with my buddy on my boat and dropped the same tackle in the same spot and didnt touch a fish. i was markin fish but couldnt tell where temp was and had know idea how fast i was at the ball either. i know gps is close but not close enough. so lookin into buyin a unit just wondering which one people seem to like the most. sorry long winded but need some help. anybody please!
