My dad put the tackle box full of O&M's up for quite a few years... Every year he was extremely excited that someone would win that box of his spoons more excited for that then the derby itself I believe lol... I think with all of us brainstorming and working together this tournament will definitely stick around and probably be stronger than ever to be honest with you it definitely needs some new blood some new ideas and yes we need to use technology to our advantage and keep things updated possibly even get some small flat screen TVs at each weigh station and we can just somehow update them directly from the internet instead of moving cards on the big board yes I understand the big board is cool to see your name on and everything and possibly we could still do that too but we definitely need to look into and take advantage of the technology we have in today's world it's also nice to jump on your cell phone while you're out on the water and you have that questionable fish on whether it would make the board or not if we could check real quick while we are on the water and we see that the fish would not make the board some of us probably would release that fish to Live Another Day..Sounds like things may be headed in a positive direction. So will this continue as "Sports-o-rama"? Or will a new organization be formed? If so, who will the board consist of? Will this continue to be a "for profit" event?
As a kid I really wanted to win that O & M lure box so we always had 1 in the water. With this in mind, I want to thank all who are stepping up for charters and tackle.

What I've been told is that the marina and I'm not sure which one actually charges them to bring it down for the weekend for viewing purposes on sight and they charge like $500.00 to $700.00 to do that... One would like to think with all the free advertising the marina is getting with there sign sitting on it all weekend they would be willing to do it for free or pennies of that cost...Mike has a good point here... We all have our individual contacts and collectively we can help the future and expand on the current derby.
Sean and les raise a good point as well. Those ideas will be discussed at the next meeting.
On another note.. The boat raffle is costing the derby a lot of money. Some ideas on replacing the boat raffle for something other than a boat or cash need consideration.
Could we start a list of what folks would like to see happen to improve the overall experience of the derby?

Thanks Jason for going out of your way to get info for all of us.. Much appreciated! Advertising is a huge thing to keep people informed other than signs up at sign up places for the Derby I don't think I have ever seen any advertising other than that? So can see why the entry's have gone down. ... Sean couldn't agree with you more on the the way the drawing goes... Those smaller fish should be going back instead of brought In for chance at a prize.. If your entered in the tournament you should automatically get a chance at a door prize without bringing in the fish...

Couldn't agree with you more and if we could figure out how to get it to Sampson State Park ( A former military training base ) and a place that could use this support right now and for future years to come that would be even better... There has to be a big fishing company out there that would be willing to sponsor a big part of this too... I think as a group we could all come together as a great team, tag teaming all the different aspects and come up with some just as good or I think even better tournament than we have now...1200 anglers at $30 a pop $36k even if you pay out 20K. I think it's safe to say we could figure out something for $16 k to have a BBQ and a nice ceremony at the end of it and pay tribute to what Memorial Day is all about.

Finger Lake Trolling Association has helped for many moons.. We run the weigh station all day Saturday and setup and take down weigh station in Watkins with our members and We have two guys in the club that attend every national lake trout derby meeting and keep us Informed of what is going on... We also sell a extremely high number of boat raffle tickets for the national lake trout derby every year... So I'd say we've been stepping it up for years.. We do everything we can to help support it and keep it going...The folks who have run it all these years had a great formula. Sounds like it's time for a new group to pick up the torch and continue. Maybe spread the responsibilities and advertising to include both ends of the lake more evenly and modifying the name calling it Seneca Lake Trout Derby.
Geneva's government doesn't seem to be helpful in recent years so maybe moving headquarters to Watkins or Sampson makes sense. I believe to be successful it will need to be organized by a few but some of us will need to get involved with the actual event.
I believe Barge Canal Bassmasters have supported it in the past and maybe some of the existing groups of Seneca Lake trollers need to step up.
Just my thoughts.

Colin is a good guy and has worked hard to keep the derby going for a long time and at his age most folks would have given up long ago. He deserves a lot of credit. I think one of the factors involved behind the scenes is the total lack of support from the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. They are all absorbed in their glamorous building and attracting out of town people to the wineries etc. and have pretty much totally ignored the derby and haven't even supported by letting folks use the restrooms during the derby to my knowledge. I think Colin may have tired trying to deal with them. Speculation on my part not hard data.
That's the whole problem I have with this.. Geneva is suppose to be the Lake Trout Capital Of The World and they want the Sports Orama to pay them to use their facilities ?? Come on that's a Joke!! They should want to support this derby it's part of the city's history... If Geneva wants to get rid of it and Watkins doesn't want to pick it up I think we as a group should present this derby to New York State and ask them to run it once a year as a way of trying to possibly save Sampson State Park .. They have Staff already working their , they have plenty of room for camping and a launch and a marina, plus plenty of room for a ceremony after.. If we could somehow figure out how to get more people to come there for the weekend and stay for tournament it's a win win...

Just received my Iron Duke Flies in the mail today. Super fast service and excellent quality/price. http://www.ironduketrollingflies.com/
Man those are some sweet colors Mike!! I wish you the best, not to mention for an extra $2.40 per fly with the caliber of hooks your using I don't see a need to buy the unrigged ones, there are some that have their own bag of tricks up their sleeve so it's nice to be able to buy either way. The thing I find the best is that there is another person with lots of knowledge about the lake "we" fish building these flies and another reason to go no further than LOU to purchase the best of the best!! Well done Mike.
Flies look very nice, good luck with the business.

Had a little free time Saturday morning so decided to get the Iron Duke rigged up with all her gear last night and Josh and I headed to Seneca at the crack of dawn... We arrived at Sampson with the flags showing steady south east wind and looking like it might be a bit bumpy but wasn't to bad at all.. We did some bouncing around looking in different spots getting ready for derby weekend.. Our divers and riggers started out hot with a Steady pick of Lakers on the Iron Duke A10 Fly and the Iron Duke Green Pearl Killa Fly then slowed down a bit until we had a good rip on a 200 Copper pulling a FLT Spoon and we got a beautiful little bow to the boat.. Think we ended up calling it a morning around 10:30 going 9 for 9 and a great shakedown for my boat and everything working the way it's suppose to.. Looking forward to the derby . We are Staying at Sampson this year for derby and can't wait to see you all there

Right now I have been using Size # 2 Vmc 2x strong treble and a 4/0 Vmc octopus but am about to upgrade my trebles to vmc #2 3x strong and maybe even 4x strong because of King Salmon (We all know what they are capable of lol) I haven't had any issues with the rigs yet but I want to make sure when you guys buy our product it stands up to anything that may take a chomp at them (nobody wants to lose that tournament winner or fish of a lifetime due to straightening out hooks).. I do put two 6mm beads between the treble and octopus and include 2 8mm beads to go between the fly and the harness also.. I have some new Flourocarbon 50lb on the way and they will all be tied with that once It gets here in the next week hopefully. . Originally I was making these flies for the Finger Lakes but now with the support of some Ontario guys starting to show interest I understand that I need to upgrade these tournament ties and am in the process of doing so... Any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact me on the site or PM me as wellNice looking web site Mike, I was wondering about the kind of hooks on your rigged flys? Boy they look super!
Thanks

Great job Les... We found a few spots in the north end a few weeks ago during our club tourney with screens like that on our Lowrance elite 7 also and every time we ran through it we picked up a brown just couldn't find that one big one.. For the money compared to all the high dollar Fish Finders on the market you can't go wrong with the Elite series.. That last picture with that huge arch on it almost looks like a man made object laying on the bottom.. That has me stumped a bit..
