  1. Did a quick Google search I did not find an actual published document just opinions and heresay like my own. I don't see how it could be 40% when prime spawning habitat is limited and there are so many anglers finding sport in lifting activley spawning fish. Good thread and discussion. Think ill call Dec Monday. [ Post made via Android ]
  2. That would be great if you are right. I was given that figure by a knowledgeable source. Can anyone confirm the correct figure from literature? [ Post made via Android ]
  3. We've caught channel cats over 20 pounds in Oneida and Onondaga. [ Post made via Android ]
  4. We had some issues trolling and ended up casting musky killers and sticks on the north end. Caught one about 20"... I was just happy to be out. [ Post made via Android ]
  5. Last I knew the natural spawning success rate is less than 3%. The water level is not an issue for the fish to make it to the hatchery. 200-300 cfs is plenty but at that level its like shooting fish in a barrel. A percentage of the salmon river fisherman are totally in it for there own personal pleasure and they could care less if it hurts the fishery. However I don't think many of the anglers are educated on the science of the spawn that they could understand how they are impacting it. In a low flow year they should consider managing the king fishery like they do in Alaska. Up there they end the season when needed to assure that enough fish get to the spawning grounds. I hope there are folks at the Dec that understand this as we'll as some of us on this board. [ Post made via Android ]
  6. Pounded messenger shoals for hours yesterday afternoon. Caught 1 decent walleye in 8 fow. Fished out to 40 feet. Hardly any bites. Fished jigs and cranks. Where are they at? [ Post made via Android ]
  7. That's about what I figured. I know they'll come up 10 feet or more for a bait so we should be in business pretty easily. [ Post made via Android ]
  8. I'm going to do some trolling for tiger musky tomorrow at otisco lake. I figure with the hot summer they'll be deep, probably in the thermocline. I was going to target deeper water north of the causeway, near the north weedbeds and near the west side points. I've caught several from shore in the spring and fall but never tried in the summer. Any insight would be appreciated. I'll be running my okuma salmon setups off big boards and maybe a dipsey. [ Post made via Android ]
  9. File a police report to make it official. If you bought them with a credit card, they may be insured...
  10. Apparently not... I fished there 2 Saturdays ago, with almost no luck. We had 1 head shaker 40 down over 80. Pretty sure it was a brown. It never took any line, did some head shaking and got off. Blue 00 flasher with aqua hammer fly. We could see the thermocline on the FF down 50 at that depth. Marked a ton of fish and bait from 40 to 60 down over 70 to 90 fow. We worked out to 200 with almost no marks, except for some fish hugging the very bottom. Very fustrating. We were out 5+ hours and only saw 3 other boats between salmon river and nine mile. Of course it was also the day of the Oswego Pro-Am.
  11. Pretty fish. I have some memories of catching some nice Cohos on the river. I remember one in particular that screamed line off so fast that the dew on the spool / line vaporized!
  12. For several years i've thrown out balls of skein or trolled glow spoons at the mouth of the salmon river in the wee hours. However, the crowds have turned me off from that. Besides the inherent frustration and danger of trolling after dark, is there any reason why trolling glow spoons on the main lake would not work off the mouth of the salmon and oswego rivers in August and September? I have an In-Fisherman video (Great Lakes Salmon and Trout) of the boys having sucess near dark, but not after dark...
  13. This year has been so busy that I have not fished alot. But the years that I am consistently on the water I catch more and bigger fish. Assuming you are a average fisherman or better, spending more time on the water may be all it takes. Guaranteed if I spent as much time on the water as at work I would have a lot of big fish in the cooler. [ Post made via Android ]
  14. Caught this a couple years back. Not a real big one, but it was pretty enough to win On The Water's trout photo contest last year.
  15. That is what I was thinking is that two shiny 00 flashers might draw strikes when fish are staging. [ Post made via Android ]
  16. I was just day dreaming at work. If I'm feeling dangerous I'll try it. [ Post made via Android ]
  17. Anyone ever try 2 with the fly behind the 2nd? [ Post made via Android ]
  18. I did an experiment this morning on my diawa 47s. They are spooled to the brim with 50# PP. These aren't even numbers but back up the point of this. At 82 on reel the actual was 11% lower, at 167 actual was 13% lower, at 255 actual was 15% lower and at 349 actual was 18% lower. The results on my magdas with20# mono weren't skewed until 250' of line out. Rays results with wire were more extreme than my results with braid. This would make a big difference if you are trying to hit Max depths with dipsys. [ Post made via Android ]
  19. Yeah I know, but I don't want to stay that close to the inlaws! Looking at last years reports it seems like a good mixed bag of fish near sodus in the late summer. [ Post made via Android ]
  20. Does the salmon fishing carry through August in the sodus and fair haven area? I might be vacationing there... thanks! [ Post made via Android ]
  21. I presume you run wire rigs off the riggers in the summer? [ Post made via Android ]
