  1. i use cowbells exclusively for lakers, never fish lakers without them. i use hammerhead bells, and very seldom use spoons for them but when i do its a stinger (pearl trout or rainbow trout) but mostly use rapala husky jerks HJ12 and HJ14's colors (bue glass minnow) (clown) or similar with bright colors, i never use natural color rapala's for lakers. also i never fish suspended lakers, i always fish 3 or 4 feet right off the bottom, and if the fishing is slow i start bouncing the ball on the bottom.
  2. fished tues and wed, went west to nine mile, and north to selkirk shores, found water as warm as 44.5 degrees, cought 2 browns on tuesday and nothing on wednesday. don't know where they are but sure weren't where i was.
  3. are you guys just looking for warmer water or is there more too it than that?
  4. heading up tuesday for a couple of days, was wondering everyones opinion on wether to go out of mexico point or oswego for browns and any place there to start looking for them. went out of mexico point last year a few times for kings so i know alot of landmarks if anyone wants to point me in the right direction. thanks.
  5. sounds like the down current pushing your weights toward the back/center of your boat, if thats the case it does it too when the downrigger is pointing off the back of the boat you just dont notice it as much. how long are the booms on the riggers.
  6. some of the advantages of the wire line i can see is you would gain greater depth with the same lb. line due to it being thinner, and i was told somewhere along the way that wire line gives a sort of (electric hum) like downrigger cable, that strikes a predatory response in fish. the disadvantages is wire line WILL kink, somewhere somehow, it WILL kink, the newer 19 strand wire line takes a little more to kink but it still will. other than that i guess it is personal preference, never ran slide diver on braid, i have ran them on 50lb mono, and dipsy's on wire. Oh yeah down currents are a ****, wire line handles them alot better than mono, can't comment on the braid.
  7. i have the 18lb tuf-line, have only used dacron lead core before so that is the only thing i can compare too, it has a good rise and fall action, a rule of thumb for me for the dacron was 5' sink per color, from what i have read, but have not seen yet is the tuf-line will sink 6-6.5' per color so calculations will not be as easy, and not fine tuned as the dacron, but time will tell. chris
  8. unless they are running the slide diver on the mono that is attached to the steel line, i don't see how it is possible, when you set the slide diver it would kink the wire. chris
  9. thinking about getting a airmar transducer for my hummingbird 757c, will i notice that much of a difference between the stock ducer and the airmar? also i have to find the best place to get one and the correct one. chris
  10. would help if we knew what size reels you have on the rods, the 19 strand is more forgiving, less acceptable to kinks, and less abrasive to rod guides. they claim the 19 strand is also less likely to collect SWF's because of the smoothness of the wire. chris
  11. what is everyone's take on stainless steel treble hooks on lures. have had alot of stock trebles bend, rust and break over the years. i was thinking about replacing all my stock trebles on my stick baits with stainless steel trebles. my question is there is obviously a difference in color between a stock bronze colored hook and stainless steel, would fish shy away from lures with stainless steel hooks, or would they be more productive because they would give a certain flash from the silver color of the stainless steel?
  12. yeah the wille's are nice, you can sometimes find one or two on ebay, i drive my wife aroud to garage sales, and last year i hit the mother load a 9 section bait file for $4, couldn't believe it, they are handy but the special mate is easier to use.
  13. i have the 8" stick bait box, works great, like it just as much if not more than my wille bait file
  14. hammerhead silver/blue 5/0 bells, with husky jerk blue glass minnow or clown, best combination i have ever used.
  15. talking about spread and gear, how many rods in water? how many off the planers? how many down the chute? go to lures, and best period in the spring you fish them. Yeah its a early thread, but i need something to drool over this winter.
  16. you might have to go deeper just to find the fish, just got back last night, mexico bay in front of the river is bare, the fish must be out in deeper water, fished to 130 fow and still didn't find any numbers. cought 4 fish in the 2 days i was there. if i were to go again i would make sure i had some j plugs with me and i would be fishing right in front of the rivers in 20-30' of water, a good run of kings has already entered in the rivers, but will be many more to come. if you do decide to run in 100' fow, run your dipsy's 240-270' out on a #2 setting. go with white flashers in morning and greens or chrome after around 8 am. if the bay is like it was when i went out there will be no pack to follow, only 6 or 7 boats in the bay that i could see. make sure you bring some spinning rods so your trip is not a bust, if you can't catch them trolling, hit the rivers, you will see hundreds of people fishing the rivers as there is a ton of salmon already in them. you can buy what you need to fish them there as there is a ton of tackle stores right in the areas, most people say that they don't feed once they get in the rivers, that may be true but they will strike out of instinct, so you can catch them. best of luck and let me know how you do. chris
  17. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):9/12-9/13 Time on Water:12 hrs total Weather/Temp: Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: calm, 2-3' Surface Temp:72 Location:mexico bay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 5 Total Boated: 4 Species Breakdown: 1 coho, 3 kings Hot Lure: mt. dew spinny, hammer glo Trolling Speed: 2.5-2.6 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 100-130 Lure Depth: 70-90 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS bay was almost non-existant with fish, marked very few, warm water top to bottom. so i assume fish moved out to much deeper water. went 3 for 4 on wednesday, 2 kings and 1 coho. thursday cought 1 very small king around 6 lbs. fishing was fun, the catching part not so much. fish are colored up good, pretty dark. heard of a couple guys catching 1 or 2 on j plugs in the mouth of salmon river. fish are in the river by the thousands. could see hundreds from the bridge in port ontario, and they guys fishing them there were having good luck. think this was the last trip up for me this year, good luck to all. chris ====================
  18. Was out yesterday and today bay was bare hardly marked any fish water was warm top to bottom so fish are most likely out to 200 feet [ Post made via iPhone ]
  19. i don't know of any manufacturer that makes them but i know a few rod builders that make them, but a custom acid wrap rod will cost you 2-3 times as much as a really good trolling rod. Can i ask why you would want one for trolling? chris
  20. have had them go bad on me on both hummingbird and lowrance units, have left power on to units and have had them go bad, and just go bad on their own, not sure about over the winter thing though. chris
  21. 4 hours is a long drive for a no go or go decision at the dock. are they catching anything in north sandy pond, if the wind is too bad for the big lake?
  22. Where does everyone go for the most accurate wind reports for mexico bay? chris
  23. i am setting up a swr rod, question is do i run a 2 or 3 color setup, and does anyone run spin doctors and flies behind the leadcore? chris
  24. i have used them, didn't care for them, but didn't have any line fraying. i switched to big jon releases and love them, will never look back. chris
