  1. The lack of respect has hit the sporting community with a bang. It seems as fishing was the last to get hit with the "me" mentality. Could go on forever. As far as sale of perch, we had legislation drafted at one point to change this but it was shot down. I think it can happen again with support. The one thing we need to keep out of it is Lake Ontario and Erie. That is one reason it was shot down in past. I have no problem drafting a letter to all powers to be to fight this fight again. DEC knows these guys go from lake to lake and when Lake O is rough the head south. Conservation Council and the New York State FIsh WIldlife Management Board a good start. Many counties have a fish advisory board as well. As for the outrageous behavior, you know the saying "you can't fix", but you can numb it with a 2x4!!! Thanks for the topic Les. D
  2. We caught them while kick netting inverts with students past spring. Not very effective for catching gobies so fact we caught bunch was interesting. As far as depth I was told they migrate deep in fall. Sent from my SM-S765C using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. Hermit, What DEC said was their population is now where it will be at its max since they do not live long, so what we see now is what we should expect to see(not get worse).. All the lakes they are in the predator fish do get bigger, but not every lake is alike, and while they eat zebra mussle, those critters filter toxins and now the fish eat the gobies. Fishery guys also told me that the gobies should be heading out to deep water so as to not interfere with fall spawning, although they do like laker eggs. We did net a lot of them in Spring up Salmon Creek so I assume they will be eating rainbow egg. Again, pros and cons to them.
  4. Second time snagged a big goby today in 110 FOW off bottom jigging lakers. Got one last Friday too while waiting for wife to meet us at Myers, other mile up lake on east side.. Hope not a sign to come. Talked with DEC fisheries and they seem to think Gobies at peak of cycle so probably what we see now is all we will see. I know pros and cons with them, but interested to see impact in another 5 years. Still doing well jigging though anywhere from 60' to 130'.
  5. Jigged Long Point, front of college. 100 to 105 FOW best. Hermits 1.25 oz painted white glow with lunker city alwife shaker best. 16 netted fish total, A number of shake offs and lots of nibbles. Son out did me as usual. 11 pound 32". Most in 25" to 27". Kept 3 for smoker, rest went back. Bit of a chop but no one else around other than pleasure boaters buzzing within 30 yards and waving!!!! Probably get worse next 2 days.
  6. Cayuga Lake Lake Trout netting – Sampling is underway to assess relative abundance, condition, and lamprey wounding rates of Lake Trout in Cayuga Lake. Data will be analyzed and summarized later this year but observations to date indicate that the Lake Trout population remains high, all trout and salmon caught appear to be in excellent condition, and very few fish have lamprey fresh scars. Hope this helps and yes they had a small older looking trawler I think blue and white. They were out most of last week.
  7. While I have no problem debating issues with DEC and sometime disagree with their programs, they do work for all of us and need input(disagree and agree). Plenty of organizations out there that meet with DEC on a monthly basis. That being said just as much lies with us as Alex said. A lot of misinformation get thrown out there and the becomes "truth". First, there were 2000 surveys, not 12, that went out, most to those holding licenses within county, then rest within region. Can't remember the total return, but it was not great. Shame on us!! Plus they survey was not the endall regardless of wich way it tilted, just another tool to make descisions. Next, walleye are not native as one post mentioned. I actually have been around long enough to have heard fishermen talk about their putting walleye in during 40's and 50's caught from other lakes. They are an introduced species. Remember browns were introduced as well, not native. Walleye are native to central US and Canada. Also regardless of what we expect from DEC, many of these lakes are difficult to manage post alwife introduction along with other invasives.. Otsego lake fishery crashed big time as well as they were were stocked with walleye and lakers to get rid of the millions of alwives. Bad things happened there. Before we send out information we need to get facts. Go to meetings within counties and regions. We have a voice and they do listen to those who come to them with facts or concerns.
  8. Here is an update from Canal Corp.
  9. Launch at Myers was still open, although water only couple inches from top of launch dock. Lots of debris. Although streams are flowing quite well the lake usually would handle it. They are using Cayuga for flood control on Seneca River. Do not want all those expensive summer homes to flood even though they are built in a "flood plain".
  10. Treaman State Park Marina on South end usually has open spots(15 min to Miliken), although not where you were interested in. Town of Lansing/Myers Park is usually full. They may have spots or dry dock space left. Or private marina mentioned above. http://www.lansingrec.com/camping-marina
  11. One more thing on the diary program is fact that you can check for boat, ice, or shore fishing. Access for many without boat increases in winter and there is good cold water shore fishing at times as well. A lot of lakers came through the ice past couple years on the lakes, and that is important data as well. I know on Owasco, far more people ice fish for lakers when conditions allow than you will see on lake in summer.
  12. Sk8man, A couple more thoughts. Each region has a DEC run FWMB (Fish WIldlife Management Board) with sportsmans reps. In region 7 the board is very active and quite often influnce policy regulation changes. Most important though is we see a definite disconnect between Albany and the regional folks. Quite often the region folks look to us to make a stink to Albany when changes are needed as they do not listen to the regional people. While there may be times we disagree with some of the things that come out of our regions, more time than not it was directed from Albany who has no clue about regional differences. That is why I pushed a year ago for the State of the Finger Lakes meetings. We need more people on board to advocate for the Finger Lakes. Also as far as the diary program it does not matter if you fish 5 times a year or 55 times a year. All that data is important regardless. Thanks for the topic as usual Sk8man.
  13. Always appreciate Sk8man sharing wisdom. Was just on another forum where guys bashing someone for asking simple ice fishing question. Sk8man would not have just answered the question, but given another 10 lines of good advice. Thanks for the post about life jacket. I usually do not go out until plenty of ice, but even then there are always flaws, cracks etc. Would like to add one to the list! Take a kid out as fishing buddy. Do not see enough of them out there.
  14. While rain stopped DEC a couple hours short, they feel confident that it was a success. Saw lots dead lamprey and many struggling on bottom shortly after they started. Hopefully a good start for a rebound in the lake.
  15. DEC starting lamprey treatment today and finish tomorrow. They were rained out last week.
  16. bought a second for our kayaks, Humminbird pirahnamax 176i portable from cabelas' on sale $139. Has chartplotter which help getting back in spots when drifting. Also have a 570 portable. Suction cup it to front of kayak works great.
  17. Another good day on Cayuga. 11:30 am to 2 pm. Caught 12 kept 6 for friend who got mad that we were releasing most as he wanted some for freezer. Thanks to Alec from Deepwater lures for the ounce and quarter jigs. It was windy when first got out there and those jigs hit bottom quick and stay there. Actually caught some casting way downwind and just reel back on bottom. They would slam it when lifting jig after few bounces. Caught 2 fish less than 30' from boat reeling in. Mid day worked again. Thankfully we had a good netter with us as son and I hooked up at exact same time once. Shows we can fish without looking at looking at fishfinder, not jigging vertical, no trolling motor etc...90'- 100' was good today. All fish but the one in pic with the mark, were clean. DEC going to treat lamprey in a week. This will kill all the juvenile born this year as well.
  18. Bulletbob that we me in blue boat last evening and one who posted the evening suggestion. Took out friend, could not stay as late as I wanted to. Glad you stuck it out. I have luxury of being couple minutes away so can hit those spots often and during week there is usually no other boats on the lake. We also hit them at noon. Just have to be there went they want to hit. Sent you a pm
  19. Jigging mornings and evenings past several day at Miliken. Evening was best action. 8-10 each trip. Kept a few for friend rest went back. Many in the 5-7lb range. Cayuga Fishers 1.25 jigs white with lunker city alwife shaker seemed best.
  20. Couple issues with Cayuga. Due to the flood May16th/17th they feel lamprey got over the fishway to the lake and some adults got up into the inlet. They will delay treating until August so that any eggs laid will hatch so they can kill everything(doesn't kill the eggs). They did handle over 5000 in the fishway this spring. The wounding rate on rainbows in the fishway were high, about 33% of the targeted length rainbows.
  21. If you are interested in getting the word out it would be good to post and attach a word document flyer with all the information. I would be happy to distribute to a number of sportsmans organizations to donate. This would make it easier for people to understand and contribute.
  22. Just putting out ideas. I would be willing to help with a chicken BBQ could have it at park or up at Lansing town hall. They can make decent money. Not the end all, but something. Should hit up the area sporting organizations etc. as well. I will try the couple I belong to!
  23. It wasnt to many years ago when it did freeze past Myers. This year it certainly would have froze more if not for the darn wind, and many days out of the north or south making it imposible to start to ice up.
  24. Believe me, I am well aware of the funding issues as the boards I am on deal with it all the time, but it still goes beyond that. The diary program which I am on in R7 is certainly a great start, but not the the whole answer. The biologists use catch rates to help them look at the social efforts, but they will be the first to say that catch rates are not a good indicator as a snapshot of the fishery or even stocking rates to a point. It is survival rates that are important. Onieda lake is a great example of that. DEC has a great hold on the total number of walleye in the lake do to intense studies and it has been stable, yet the catch rates are all over the map in past 20 years most often due to availability of bait fish. They need to be out gill netting for everything possible and developing management plans based on real numbers, diet analyses and so on. That is where the money constraints come in. When the biologist do not have these tools it is often a best guess on what is going on in these lakes. Then you add invasive species, crashes in bait etc and the whole thing falls apart as it has. I think with our support we can make it work and give the fisheries program what they need. The hatchery improvements have been a long time coming and were a separate issue within the Governors budgets. The governor needs to be continually reminded of how many dollars fishing pumps into the states economy.
  25. Sk8man, I was hoping to make the long drive for me and attend and it is a whiteout at my house right now, but thankfully you have summarized and started a much needed discussion. I am disappointed though that what you say, not much really took place. Region 8 crew would not do a meeting last year like the R7 crew did because they said they did not have enough time to prepare. One year later and what? My original intent of requesting these meetings which started with the Eastern last year was to pull together concerns for the entire Finger Lake system. Although each lake has some unique challenges many similarities are out there that should be looked at as a whole. First while I do not know the R8 Fisheries crew like I do the R7 I do see a disconnect in the way each region approaches management of the Lakes, but that is systemic in DEC as a whole. I really think it needs to be more cohesive in order to work. Then in each region I see little "teamwork" when looking at all the lakes. Often one biologist has the difficult task of managing each lake and do not have the resources to work as a team on the whole system and they often are lacking the number of biologist needed to really study the lakes as they should. With the help of all those that obviously care about the health of the fisheries I would like to compile a list of directions we would like to see the Lakes take. What are the similarities and what are unique then attack each. I have the ability to take this through the proper channels at DEC and other groups. If many are interested I am willing to give out my email, compile a constructive list of thoughts, concerns as well as positive directions and then disseminate any and all information I can get from DEC and other resources. I really think that we will continue to follow the same path unless we all get involved, but we need to start somewhere. If I am wrong let me know and I will simply go fishing, otherwise I am very willing to be a part of the solution.
