  1. Nick, your probably the only one with that many people on a boat. I believe you went by me last year with a boat load of people. Sent from my C771 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  2. Dont worry about a 20 rod spread. You need 7 people on a boat to fish those rods. Who has 7 men on a boat? No one! A 22 ft boat cant accommodate 7 men on a good day! Fish 5 leader rigs, and be good at it. Then you will be one to beat. Sent from my C771 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. Yeah, I hear that! Took all the fun out of it. If you pulled 15 leader rigs, boat control was a must. Didn't take much to make a mess of things. I handline my rigs. I dont remove leaders, making boat control even more a priority. No rookies at the wheel. Sent from my C771 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. I miss the old days! I loved 10 leader rigs. 15 was too many for Keuka, owasco and others. With 4.5 lbs of lead your dragging bottom before you got the rig in. I wish we could get the 10 leader back! Sent from my C771 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. 5 rods = 25 spoons in the water! Hard to beat 5 leader rigs on the Finger Lakes. As for top water, stretch one out from the planer board to the boat, ( 15 ft spacers = 75ft of rig ) put the sinker on the boat end ( at the rod ) and lower to 25 ft. I call it a PBR! ( Planer Board Rig ) 5 spoons fishing top water!
  6. Here is a good link regarding "tuning" your antenna. Too much return can ruin your radio. Proper whip length for a 150 Mhz radio is 40 9/16 inch. I realize most of us, including myself use an 8 ft antenna, but they are "tuned" to 1.1 swr. this is an acceptable rating. Probably the best tuner on the market is the MJF812b. You can buy a radio and antenna and hook them up and notice no problems, however it may not be functioning properly. Without a tuner, you will never know. http://www.hamuniverse.com/testingswr.html Jason
  7. I see no one mentioned anything about radio/antenna tuning. Because your radio is low frequency and your transmitting vhf to a loudspeaker your radio and antenna should be "tuned". There are tuners available on line. You can make one if your comfortable with electronics and such. So much talk about details I thought I would though that out. 8. Joe, dont tell me your the kind of guy who lets work get in the way of fishing? Jason
  9. Ive had both Shakespeare and Ray marine coax vhf antennas. both transmit and receive well. Used Ray marine on the ocean ( gulf stream ) had no issues. I would recommend either. Wiring properly is a must for good quality. Not just vhf, but all electronics. I wire all accessories to a second battery, main battery just for the boat. 10. I just ordered one from Mike at Hills Valley's and Streams. They are a sponsor on this site. I ordered a Uniden for $129. It is comparable to any other and cheaper than some. It has all the features you are looking for and isn't breaking the bank to purchase. You can contact Mike aka Iron Duke here on this site. He is usually in the Finger Lakes conversations. I checked a lot of them out before purchasing the one I did. The price is as good as any other's and cheaper than most. Jason

  13. Fished keuka saturday. Launched out of Branchport. No fish to speak of in the west branch, so we motored down to the bluff. Set all the rods and got one before I could sit down. I thought we were gonna slam them all day, but the next couple hrs were slow. Finished the day 4 for 5, all lakers. lost one we didnt get to see. Fishing was a little tough, but there are fish spread out all over. Hoping to go there again next weekend also.
