    Early Ice Walleye

    Would any of you fishing veterans be willing to share a few tips on targeting and icing walleye? Tactics, common fish holding structure, tackle, techniques, etc...

    I am still fairly new to targeting the mighty walleye. Thought this might be a good general exchange and particularly helpful to those new to ice fishing for walleye. Any wisdom shared is deeply appreciated. Thank you and Happy Holidays!

    I saw a black bear in my stand the last day of muzzle in the southern tier, Stuben County. First time I have seen one in the woods. It was probably 90-110 lbs. watched it for about 2 min then it must have winded me and bolted. I cant believe how fast they run! Very cool.

    Felt great to get on the ice for the first time this season on Sunday. Limited ice made for spotty fishing. However, still managed several flags, few nice perch, 2 pickerel, and a largie released safely.     Great topic. Clearly a lot of experience here..... Lots of great info and advice.

    110% agree- fish with a partner..... If u must fish alone tell someone where you are and when you will be off the ice.

    Decent creepers are a worthwhile investment.

    Extra gloves, hat, and sox are easy to carry and can be a life saver when its nasty(for you or a buddy).

    Can you have too many sounders?!

    That is a NICE NYS Buck... A very minute percentage of hunters see... let alone harvest a buck of that caliber consistently in New York State. Particularly in the northern zone. (I realize that was a southern zone deer) I believe the deer pictured above is an awesome specimen of a NYS whitetail and should not be diminished. We all know that Ohio, Kansas, Idaho, Illinois and a few other states are factories for such deer but this is a fine example of whitetail hunting in NY. Thanks for sharing!! Stay safe in the woods.

    For what its worth..... I shoot a 7mm08 and use the winchester silver ballistic tip rounds in 140 grain. Accurate round. Just harvested a doe and butchered her. The expansion of the round is very impressive.

    Great observation, Bosun......I would not have believed such large bobcats exist either....if I didnt see it on camera. Spoke with a DEC officer that winter while ice fishing and told him about trail cam pics. Asked his thoughts on an 85 + lb bobcat. He said, just like humans there are the top 5% that could reach that size. Of course that is not representative of the average specimen.
