  1. Just wondering if anyone is getting any Kings out of Oswego?
  2. Very well said Bout time!!! The best part is just fishing and enjoying your time with your son. Enjoy the competition, companionship, excitement of the tournement. Im really not sure why Charter boats would feel any kind of satisfaction competing and winning in an amerature division, but don't let it bother you, In my years of fishing Lake Ontario I have owned a variety of "larger" boats, a few Penn Yans my favorite a 262 Competitor, and I do agree in the nasty weather they do a lot better with speed control, drift, and just the stability.....but in fair to good weather a small boat can do just as well as a big boat. Even when I had my big boat I would rarly run more than three riggers, usually I would run two riggers either stacked or cheaters if using spoons and focus on wire dipsys and maybe a few board rods per side with copper or leadcore, I totally believe the stealthy approach, "less lines running through the water" and more focus on targeting the depths you are marking the fish. I now have a Starcraft 196 Fishmaster and run two mag10s, two wire dipsy rods, and usually that's it, and I'm very successful. I think it would be great if a lot of small boats would enter, work together and beat the Charter boats entering the amerature division, if that happens charter boats will be less likely to enter do to embarrassment, lol
  3. Karmakaze, I'm from Watertown and would like 2 14lb, did you plan on driving to pick yours up, if so I could order mine and give you some gas money.
  4. I hear ya, a friend of mine shot a 228lb 15 point last season.(10 point with split brow tines and three legal sticker points)He cut it in half, took the front out that day, got out of the woods at 10:30 and went back the next day for the other half. I was actually glad I was working and not hunting with him that week, lol. That buck was killed in almost un hunt able cliffs and shelfs, matter of fact he almost let it go and trust me he really would have let it go, I witnessed it about 5 years ago. I came out to a huge swail and saw him full draw on a nice 8 point. I watched him put his gun down. I called him on the radio, he said being all the way into the Jet crash it would need to be a smasher or nothing.
  5. Lily, That's too bad, nothing worse than finding a private chunk in the middle of nowhere. I did get a 7 point Sunday, basically an 8 point missing a guard tine. Not a huge bruiser but a nice Adirondack Big Woods buck. I cut his track on the back side of mount Marcy, got a quick glimpse of him withen the first 1/2 mile, caught him on a dead run on the north side of a gut, more a lucky quick shot, LOL.......then the fun began, that dreaded drag out. Shot him around noon, got him out around 4:30, but all worth while. Good Luck, you will definatly have enough tracking snow, lol Brian
  6. Unfortunately it's happened to me, not once bit twice, to bad I didn't learn my lesson the first time. Now I keep shooting, even if I'm positive the first shot was perfect.
  7. Also, I've never heard of changing a 30 caliber to a 338 caliber, good to know. Those Big Woods bucks have a will to live like nothing I've ever seen before, better keep shooting til they are down, lol I know a 35 Whalen is a good woods gun though.
  8. I've definatly heard of Lanny Benoit, read articles and watched films, and the greatest thing I ever learned from him was what to do when you first jump a Big Mature buck you are tracking. If I didn't get a shot or spooked it before I could see it I always believed it was over. Not any more, I wait about 45 minutes and then retake the track, it works almost every time. Years ago I would continue right on and he would panic and move into the next three counties. Now I stop, sit down for about an hour and jump carefully back on the track. If I jump him again and can't get a shot I repeat the process over. I wish I learned this about 20 years ago, my trophy wall would be a lot bigger.
  9. The 280 is a great round, it carries almost the ballistics of a magnum, great long range hard hitting bullet.
  10. Lily, I won't pull the trigger on anything that's not a big rack either,I try to get my meat hunting bow or muzzleloading, and I agree 100% with you, I wouldn't trade Big Woods hunting for anything, I can't count how many times I've tracked a nice buck to posted signs hunting smaller parcels of State land. There is a trade off.... In the forever wild area I hunt, with no logging the canopy has grown and limits the undergrowth, the deer population is very low. I had my worst year last year only seeing 9 deer all hunting season and I worked hard, hunted hard, many times three or four days in a row without seeing a deer, I guess the challenge is part of the drive and the reward of a 200lb buck makes it all worthwhile.
  11. The model 700 is a great gun, and light, but a model 7 mountain rifle carbine is lighter but more importantly to me, I comes to aim better than any gun I've ever shot, which is super important to my style of hunting. Also it is very compact, easy to weave in and out of thick cover. I bought one for my dad for Christmas and couldn't believe how well the gun fit and pulled up. I guess It's just a personal preference, someone else might not like the gun. Chas0218, The 20 gauge wouldn't work in the full picture, would be fine at times but there is open hardwood ridges and beaver meadows that you can see for a long ways, and many times that has been where I've caught up to a buck tracking it, so I would say I need both a good brush gun with down range capabilities also. The 30-06 works great.
  12. Small world, years ago I lived outside Malone and also hunted Regis wilderness, and Tupper lake. The guy that hunts with me goes to the high peaks for three days every season, usually kills a nice rack buck. I've Still hunted almost everything south of route 3 from Star Lake to Cranberry, From Stillwater north to my tent. We actually break off to hunt the moose river plains a weekend also. I also don't like to sit and spend most of the time still hunting, and tracking. All my guns are 30-06 so I agree it's the best caliber for Big Woods hunting, unfortunatly the model 7 only comes in 260, 243, 25-06 and 308. Out of those choices I think 308 is the best. I have a 300 Wetherby magnum that I never use and want to sell that and buy the model 7. If I only use it twice a year it will be worth it, lol
  13. Yeah, that cut is tricky, especially when there is a lot of current or high cross winds. I would always cross my fingers in the spring when water level was high that my rocket launchers wouldn't hit. I'm actually suprised that Tiara fit under it. What a sweet boat you bought, you wouldn't believe how close I was to taking out a loan for that, lol I can't believe no one has bought your 286, what a sweet platform, good luck and enjoy the Tiara.
  14. Did you buy the Tiara with the Black canvas top in Henderson, if so that is an awesome boat, I eyeball it everytime I go though the cut, a dream salmon rig for sure!!!
  15. Lily, I actually hunt with either my 7600 or my favorite is my Remington 750 woods master semi-auto carbine. I also like my Browning Belgium. All are 30-06 and I use 180 gr bullets. I just like the model 7 cause it is light. We travel about 6 to 8 miles a day still hunting and sometimes 10 to 12 miles. My two favorite tree stands are over 3 miles one way from my tent, some days a light gun like the model 7 would be my choice mainly cause I'm worn out, lol Also, I may be wrong but I believe the 308 and 30-06 have almost the same ballistics with a 150 grain bullet, I know it's hard to believe cause the 308 is a much smaller casing but like I said, I may be wrong on this statement. Just curious what area of the Adirondacks did you hunt, I've studied a lot of them, I might know the area. Have a good night
  16. Looking for a Remington model 7, prefer 308 caliber, with short barrel. I hunt the forever wild part of the Adirondack mountains in the five ponds wilderness area and these guns are perfect for this type of still hunting because of how far you walk in a day. I bought my dad one for a Christmas present and I fell in love with it. I'm only looking for the short barrel carbine model, hardwood stock only too . Thanks
  17. I have Big Jon vertical quad rod trees and love them for boards, they are sweet and easy to adjust. I have Traxstech rod holders on track system. These rod holders adjust both vertical and swivel all with a pull and lock system. They have super strong springs and the rod holders have a rubber rope at the holder tip that locks your dipsy rod into the holder which I only use when running two wire dipsys per side of boat. Anyway, Just wanted anyone looking into upgrading their rod holder system to give traxstech Look them up at Traxstech.com
  18. I'm in Oswego tommarrow, I would like to take a peek at it if time permits , PM your phone number, Thanks
  19. I tried to post a few pictures and only the 5 for 8 went thru, I'm not very tech savy
  20. Absolutely awesome video, great rod management, there is nothing like fishing kings in the big pond, and this captures the excitement!!
  21. I personally haven't heard anything on Browns, but haven't really targeted them. I know the last few years you couldn't avoid catching them and this year they have been very scarce in the Henderson area. I don't know what the reason is, anyone have any opinions on this??
  22. Well I didn't do well today, it was rough, only ran two riggers. Fired the rod twice, one King and one laker, quit fishing at 9:00am
