  3. The fact that you did that all yourself is so cool. I wish I were that handy. Keep us posted on how it goes as you refine it.

    Parts box

Ok, this is going to sound corny, but you know the guy on TV that puts a screen door in the bottom of a boat and than paints it with Flex Seal? Well, that stuff really does work. A while back we split the seam on a canoe at our hunting cabin. While in town the next day I saw Flex Tape, made by the same company, at a hardware store. We were able to seal the split seam with it and keep fishing for the rest of the trip. After seeing how well it worked I started carrying some tucked away at the bottom of my emergency box. I got it on Amazon in a roll and cut a few legnths so it would fit in the box. https://www.amazon.com/Flex-Seal-Tape-Black/dp/B01N5Q3G8H/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1489451858&sr=8-1&keywords=flex+tape
  5. Man you must be really bored....
  6. I just did a little Google search for Trim Tabs. There are some self adjusting options that are not that expensive and they look easy to install. As always, you guys here on LOU are really helpful and I really appreciate it. Thanks !!!
  7. Leaning to port and conflicting advice Good day everybody, I have a Starweld 18 Pro with a 115 outboard and a 9.9 kicker mounted on the port side. The boat seems to sit pretty level when at rest but leans to port when on plane. The lean get worse as you increase speed. These two facts lead me to believe it's not a weight issue. I've been reading up on the internet and talking to people but getting conflicting advice. At this point the most reasonable cause I've come across is the small adjustable fin just above and behind the prop. Even the name of this fin seems to be in question on a couple of blogs. (Not within LOU, but others). My understanding is that this fin is intended to adjust for the natural tendency of the boat to pull to the left because of the rotation of the prop. I've also read they are unnecessary if you have power steering, which I do. I can't send a picture because the boat is storage but the fin is adjusted slightly (maybe 3 degrees or so) to the right, which would make sense if it were correcting a pull to the left. I'm being told that the fin pulling the boat back to the right may be causing the lean left. I can't quite get my head around the dynamics of that. It seems counter-intuitive to me. Here come the questions? 1. What is the correct name of this little adjustable fin? 2. Could it's current setting really be causing the leaning to port? 3. Is there any harm in adjusting it back and forth to see what results I get? I guess I mean, could I cause a bigger problem in doing so? As always, any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated.
  8. Hi guys, All this is really helpful. The discussion on line vs leader got me thinking. I've been tying a few crawler harnesses and im using 15 lbs floro line, not leader material. I know a lot of guys use 17 or 20 lbs when tying harnesses. Im going lighter line to help the action early in the year when trolling really slow. Ive not had any problems in the past but ive only been tying my own for the past two years. Should I be using leader material and is 15 to light?
  9. The more I think about it the more I like the idea of mono for the main line with flouro at the end. That approach allows for a lot of flexabilty. Ive always used seaguar because a close friend who has fished lake michigan his whole life swears by it. Thanks guys ! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  10. Thanks Missdemeanor Do you use mono for the main line or flouro for both? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. Off Season Questions and Ideas With the holidays behind us and football winding down, it's time to get started on all the off-season tasks I promised myself I would do this winter. For most items on my to-do list I find myself wondering what other guys do or how they do it. The purpose of this topic is to pose those questions and kick around answers and ideas. The first thing I'm wondering is this. Do I need to replace the line on my primary trolling reels? The line is 15 lbs test Fluorocarbon put on last winter. They were in the water about 18 to 20 days last year, some days longer than others. The lines look fine to me but I know some of the reels have less line on them than others due to snags, tangles, etc. None are really low. I am leaning towards replacing if only so I can make sure the line counters are consistently calibrated. What say the group?
  12. I can't even imagine catching a smallie that big. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. Hey Chaser Have you hit any salmon? My buddy and I will be fishing out if catfish Creek next weekend and hoping to find a few. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  14. Hearing others have been struggling, while disappointing, at least makes me feel like it's not just me. We're headed to Otisca tomorrow but will be back for one last try Columbus day weekend. If anyone is interested we trolled all day off Oswego in 100 fow with flys, and spoons and didn't have a hit. Only marked one fish. Disappointing but that's why it's called fishing not catching. 15. Trolling just off Oswego, very few other boats, and no fish. What gives? Help!!! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. I'll be up there next weekend. Please don't catch all the fish this week. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. Thanks guys I really appreciate your help.
  18. Thanks Sea-IV Where you have yours is where I'm going to move mine, just about where the transom wall meets the gunwale. It sounds like you mounted your rails yourself. Do you happen to know if there are any wires right under the side deck that far back? I can't see up in there and would hate to drill into the anchor light wires which should be the only wires anywhere near there. Thanks again
  19. Fat Trout - I think you just solved my problem. In comparing mine to your I can see what you mean about being too far forward. I either need to move my rails back or add small ones further back where there is more support. Thanks for taking the time to help me out with this.
  20. I've been trying to figure out where I can create some new storage space and the idea of a step/box like that never occurred to me. Whats a great idea. I know what I'm doing with my next rainy day. Thanks for sharing guys! And as you can see I'm still trying to figure out how to use this site too !
  21. Hi Everyone, I have a new Starweld that I'm still outfitting and could use some help. I'm hopping someone else out there has solved this problem already. I have Berts rails on the deck just inside and below the gunwale. The rails are great for rod holders but I just bought Berts swivel mounts and used them to mount Cannon Downriggers. Here's the problem. When you put any weight on the boom of the downrigger the whole deck where the rails are mounted moves. And it moves way too much to be normal flexibility. I've attached a pic to give an idea of where its mounted now. Does anyone else out there have a newer Starweld with downriggers mounted? If so, where and how did you mount them? Any thoughts are welcome and appreciated. Thanks Frank S.
