Niagara bar
garrymny replied to Mike523's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Would love to try the bar once in a while, but no suitable boat launch. -
Yeah I check the LEU forum, but there aren't near as many members, and the reports are sketchy at times. My neighbor is a 70 year old lady and she wants to go walleye fishing, but she hates to troll! I took her last year for the first time she fished in 40 years. She got a sheephead and I thought she was going to jump out of the boat. Funny. Well she wants to go for walleye, or perch, so when we get a calm day I will try it again. Maybe drift with crawlers. I got some of those mustad death-spin hooks.

Cabelas Buffalo has the rangers. And the price is good too, last time I was there. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Question on depth
garrymny replied to Bassin Bob's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Jeremy thanks. I have often wondered what a good starting point is for my two riggers. I will try one at 52 degree water and one at 45 degree water. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
I've been using dental floss for thread because my old fly tying thread kept breaking. Then cover with fingernail polish. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Thanks for the information guys. I have fairly good luck with Salmon and steelhead, (only my second year) but I certainly need help with lake Erie Walleye and perch! I live in Clarence, so I am close enough to both lakes. But after many fishless trips to Erie I now Concentrate my efforts on Ontario. I do like walleye and perch better for eating, so I do hope I can learn where to catch them. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

They really need more than one buoy in the entire lake, off Rochester. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I have a 19 footer, deep v. Has nice tall sides. I have thought if I had a bigger boat I would be able fish in rougher water. Then I realized a few things: It is difficult to tend lines when it is rough. I usually have poor luck when it is rough. I don't enjoy it as much when it is rough. So I realized, my boat takes some pretty rough water and any rougher would not be enjoyable. So I think I am ok with my current boat. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Status update on Fort Niagara Launch(s)- July 22.
garrymny replied to garrymny's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Yeah when I was there paid my money at top of hill, and found same thing. Didn't launch because I was afraid I would scrape the transducers off. Really too bad they don't put in floating docks. The Niagara bar fishing is basically not an option this year. Sent from my XT1030 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

The trouble with no clip, which is how we have been doing it (did not know about the clip) is that the minute the net hits the water, the current, from 2.7 MPH forward trolling motion, wads the net up and right into a ball. Can't stop the motor as that creates a huge tangled mess of everything. I will try the clip, as it seems the minute something hits it, the clip releases, and the nets falls down. -
I have a Lowrance elite 4x Chirp. Now renamed the Hook 4. I saw one in Texas while I was there for work for $150 on sale. That would be a good deal. Although the unit seems to work well, for reasons hard to explain, I would buy a Hummingbird or Garmin next time.

Used Downriggers can be found fairly easily. Get both.

slapping the line on the water surface removes some of them. My lead core does not have a problem with them, which is interesting to me. I think it is the smaller leadcore, 17 lb. I do use the sea flea and some rods have 30 lb trilene which I heard helps too.
