I have been asked a number of questions lately about licensing requirements to be a captain or to take people out on your boat for hire, and the difference between a guide license and a captains license. As a result I am going to post some information here for general use. If you are on a federal water way, which includes the canal system, and every lake that is attached to the canal system and you are taking passengers for hire on the water you must have a Captains License issued by the USCG. You also must participate in a random drug screening program that you must pay for through an outside company and you should keep proof of it. Once you have your captains license the drug testing is not automatic, and does not happen through the government. You must contract with your own outside company to do it for you, even if you are a one man show. Failure to be properly licensed can result in fines of 10,000 per event. (This is not isolated to fishing if you are hunting ducks it also applies, this law has nothing to do with fishing, it has to do with passengers for hire on federal waters, for any reason) In NY if you are taking someone out for hire either fishing, hunting etc you need a NY guide license if you are not on a federal waterway. (look into this yourself if this describes you) This post is not meant to be legal advice but simply a notice to help those that might have been given bad advice. If you are doing any of these activities for hire it is on you to make sure you are in proper compliance with NY state regulations, and Federal Regulations. As we approach the season this year I would strongly strongly suggest that everyone who is doing these things for hire be properly licensed.

I was just informed they hit the Meyers side as well. This was a very brazen crew.......to have pulled that off to the degree they did they were organized and equipped to haul a LOT of gear. I cannot believe that someone somewhere along the way did not see these clowns. There was a good number of players at least 4 from what I am told. They were captured on camera, but they knew to keep their vehicle off the premises. Back when I ran a charter I had a wifi motion sensor camera on board the boat, If you walked down dock and approached my boat an alarm went off on my phone. The camera rotated and had speaker capability and a light turned on. There were times I had conversations with people through the camera because I was concerned about their intentions.

Ok so here is the story, A group of thieves in the early morning hours of Sunday stripped some boats of their fishing gear including my very close friend and the man who purchased Indepth Fishing Adventures from me. They took every spoon, every stitch of gear and items off his boat, other boats were hit but I do not know to what extent. I originally posted this yesterday but it was in the heat of the investigation and I was asked to take it down to allow time to work. My request to the community is that you keep an eye out on Market Place, Craigs List, and yes here for a glut of trolling equipment. Coppers, divers, flasher flies, and Amish outfitter foam spoon cases that were loaded with spoons were among the items stolen, slide divers as well. Based on what was and was not taken I'm thinking while well organized they aren't likely fishermen and will be looking to sell the gear. Please don't pepper with too many questions or call the marina. They have enough to deal with. 1.) If you leave your boat equipped in a marina rethink it..... 2.) We all need to watch out for each other. If you suspect something odd reach out to the NY State Police they are running the investigation. It infuriates me that something like this would happen, let alone be a coordinated effort by multiple players. And my friend Sk8 .... you are as usual correct!

One way or another I will have more coming I might be working with Lansing Fire on their new rescue to do some joint training and see how their new system does with sonar in the next few weeks it’s a great target to practice tuning the sonar on Cody so thanks for the find .. Lily aka Zack brought it to my attention and I had some time on Patrol this weekend to work on the scan It appears at least 50 feet long and clearly has some mast or posts sticking up based on the shadows.. depending on what visibility is I could drop a dive group on it myself I am very intrigued …

Just launched at wrights for my first time last week wide open ramps like six lanes perfect surface gets deep pretty quick very long docks only 10 bucks to launch. Went 6/10 on my run last weekend. Hitting meat/spoons/flasher flies....went straight out worked north and south hits between 150-350fow..... good luck...2.3-2.6 depending on direction and greens were good... -
Took my two adult children and captain Chris a friend we used to captain different boats on Cayuga to Oswego for a Friday evening Saturday morning trip. We moved boat from Cayuga dunked it in Friday started to fish and lost speed wheel off FishHawk on first drop … was windy after the storm and after three lost hookups decided a bonsai trip to fat Nancy’s for a repair was in order to make Saturday more productive… and it was bagged 6/10 all Kings thanks to Chris lending a hand converting my thinking to the big pond…
