  1. Sounds good Scott! 1dogshy you are correct. Lake trout has very forked tail, dark greenish with light colored marking. No black spots.
  2. Thanks for the pic! The rainbow is on the right. Spots on the tail, smaller spots , Few or no spots below lateral line real white in the mouth. Pink strip on side unless they are real silver from being in deep water. We won't chop your head off rabbit.
  3. I wish I had also. The one I lost was a nice one. Hope it helps some of the new people out! Wes
  4. And we released the big laker to fight another day
  5. Ben and I decided to try for browns for the derby and had a great time. We were out of our element fishing so shallow in such warm water. We stayed in water 60' to 80' and started with 2 riggers with stinger spoons parked at 35 and 45 and two dipsys 100' on 3 setting with stick baits. We had a steady pick all morning with several doubles and a couple triples. Highlight of the morning was a double with Ben landing a 4lb brown and the "old man " as he calls me dropping a huge rainbow that would have been between 8 and 10 pounds right at the back of the boat. My wife and 1dogshy joined us later in the morning after the bite slowed but we still got a few more fish. We went in for weigh-in and enjoyed a chicken bbq before going back out till dark. Being tired from a full day of fighting fish and weeds we decided to run 2 rigggers and 600' copper. The girls landed several more fish with 1dogshy landing a nice 5lb landlock . Just before dark the copper rod fired, Ben fought the fish for 5 or 10 minutes and we could tell it was a good one. He handed the pole to 1dogshy and asked her if she wanted the fighting belt she said no. We checked the time and after 5 minutes asked her if she was ready for the fighting belt and she was. After 15 minutes we boated the laker. Great way to end the day! battle is on! wanted to post a pic to help with fish I.D. These fish look alot alike. Brown on left jaw goes back to the eye, square tail more spots farther below lateral line. Landlock more tapered head, jaw stops short before eye, fewer spots below lat. line and forked tail. Some have more fork than others. Hope this helps. Wes
  6. Be careful Scott I've seen stuff like that come back and bite people. Got myself and crew all signed up. How many people do you have in? Are we going to talk on the radios so that we can release any fish that don't have a chance of placing? Or do we just bring in what we get and sort it out at weigh in? I have not been on the water in a few weeks and not sure yet which end of the lake to fish. Might play with the sailboats and see how many run over my copper Wes
  7. Nice job Rollie, See you this weekend! Wes
  8. How big is the boat? If the wind is out of the west you can launch at Dean's cove or Tfalls. If it is out of the north the waves can stack up. We have a 20' trophy and fished in a 30 mph north blow. Waves must have been 4 to 5 feet We could only troll with wind but still could fish. The waves tend to be closer together than lake"O" so it can be tough going. Wes
  9. I'm thinking 1200' that should reach those sulking lakers at 250'. It would take the whole lake to turn around.
  10. Looks like you are getting that spin doctor thing down. You might want to start entering some of these derbys. You have been putting some real nice fish in the boat Good place to put faces with the names you see on the board. Ben tells me you had someone that fishes lake "O" say that purple doesn't work Keep up the good work. I have not been out for two weeks. I might need therapy if I don't get out soon. Wes
  11. Great job Great to see you teaching the boy about catch and release. Think how big that fish will be the next time someone catchs him. I think Cayuga lake is turning into a trophy fishery and you see more and more people releasing the bigger fish. We love to eat fish but try to keep fish that are hooked deep or smaller lakers. We put all the rainbows back even during derbys unless it would be a top money fish. We have had very good release rates with unhooking them at the side of the boat. We have a Boga style grip that works well for us if we want to get a quick pic. What helps with this style of landing is the heavy pound test we use on our spinny flys. We grab the spinny insert grib and unhook. It might be hard to do on a rigger fish with light line. See ya on the lake! Wes
  12. Scott, Any chance we could have someone at the launch to keep one lane open at the ramp for people coming in? The reason I normaly do not launch at Meyers is because of the pleasure boaters that have no idea how to be courteous. 30 fisherman can launch in 1 hour but 2 pleasure boaters can tie that same launch up for that long or longer. They could use a sign to instruct them on the obviouse like: stage boat before pulling to ramp, Do not tie boat up in loading ramp, Do not work on boat in ramp, ect. I would be willing to help fund such a sign. Any guys that do safe boating course this should be part of it. Wes
  13. Nice job It took us 2 years to get our first 10 lber. Did you get all 3 fish on your new wire rigs? I love when people say lakers don't fight. I've had a few days when my arms hurt from reeling in those lakers that don't fight. Keep up the good work!
  14. nice job Hal. Average catch rate for the angler diary is around 2.5 hours per legal fish. You are right on track Wes
  15. Great job Andy and crew I'm not going to ask what color lure or your secret spot I'm just wondering how the heck you got that many pounds of fish in that little cooler Wes
  16. The cline dropped from last week. The cline was around 70 feet. I tried running 12 color but kept getting tangled due to currents. Had the same problem last week. I normaly run 4 dipsy's with no problem and in the last two weeks I've had them tangle 4 or 5 times. I'm sure the weeds are not helping. You pick up a ball of weeds and the dipsy is no longer running were it should be. My mailman better hurry up and bring my secret spinny for Sunday
  17. Took Ben's Grandma and Floyd out today. It was hot, fleas were not bad but the weeds were a pain. No big fish but the grill is heating up as I write this. Fished Meyers to Long point no spot better than another. Will have to wing it Sunday. See ya then.
  18. we use a tiny spro barrel swival. I'm sure Ben showed you the knot for the wire, If not there are some good videos On the Fish Doctor Charters web site. Wes
  19. For the finger lakes it doesn't much matter. If you fish for king salmon that might be another story. 1000 feet would be enough for most fish but if you have a few mishaps with the wire and you have to cut some off you might start getting short for salmon. I am not sure how much wire plus backer that reel holds. I think we have the 30d okuma and 47 diawa. I would use enough backer so that the reel is near full so the line counter is more accurate. The tape " Black electrical tape works" that Splitshot is talking about is to help prevent the line from slipping on the spool. Super braid is real bad for that, mono is better for not slipping. Wes
  20. Corn works good. Buy cheap stuff, toss a handfull in the water. load a fine wire hook as full as you can get it and toss it out, hang on They are line and weight shy. I use 4lb test with little or no weight if little current. In rivers I would stalk feeding carp a toss a crayfish 5 feet upstream of them. Have fun Wes P.S. leave the bail open if you put it in a forked stick. If you put a rubber band around the grip on the pole you can put the line under the rubber band so that it does not un spool but when the fish strikes the line will pull out of the rubber band you close the bail and set the hook.
  21. Rolmops stop by the lou all weigh in and we can show you how to rig them. Knots , deployment and setup can be learned in a few minutes. You will curse them if you get tangle but you forget about that when you have a fish on all the wire rods at once. One suggestion I have is after you spool the reel up take it out in deep water , deploy all the wire .allow the wire to relax and then reel it in without trippng the dipsy. We learned the hard way when we latched into a big king salmon with a freshly spooled reel. The line was not wound tight enough and it started slipping and cutting into itself. Its a pain but we have had no problems after doing that. Also I read from one of the wire suppliers to have someone hold the spool and keep tension on it. If you hold your thumb on the wire it will induce stresses that can cause failure . Wes
