  1. Friday June 29 we fished the big fish Friday Species tourney.. Only could weigh in one Laker, Brown, Steelhead, and King. Wheeled into our normal Brownie waters...deployed the typical frog pattern spoons...and all Hell broke loose... Slight problem though... They were not browns , but kings... In 35 FOW!
We put a high teens King in the box and released all the others.... No brown! So into 15 fow we go.... Cold water in shallow so out went split shot rigs and mini Chinook divers.... After 5 minutes we iced a 7ish BT. Cool.... Now it's out to 120 to look for our LT... Bottom was void of chickens, but I put down the gambler/ Hammerhead rigs anyway... 20 minutes and Mr Laker 13lb came over the transom...not back to the Kings for an upgrade.... In 35 fow, I put a frog Yeck on the bottom and it immediately went... Not a King, or BT.... But a Steelhead ...9lbs.... We never did upgrade the king.... And ended in 6th out of 27 boats... Not too bad..
MCOC June 30th... 0500 it was hammer down back to the skinny water... The water warmed up a little and the fish moved out a little. Once we got on them, it was on like Donkey Kong...spoons.... Geezers, wonderbreads, shelly Snacks and flounder pounders....short coppers and 5 color rigs took fish also... After the sun got high in the sky, we put out the meat rigs on 8inch spin docs. Man did the Kings chew... We ended up weighing our 5 biggest kings and we ended up 9th out of 47 boats. I'm happy with our finish because there were a lot of good fishermen in the field.
Congrats to Jim Piano and Team Hammerhead for taking top king prize and over all win.
Being part of the tournament planning was very time consuming... As I walked around the weigh in...I saw sunburned smiles, hand shakes, slaps on the back....and all the coolers with the team's catch... Very humbling... In the end the event raised around 3k for Dream Factory Rochester. I'm blown away....
To all who participated, thank you very much... You guys and Gals are the cream that rises to the top...
    Be well anglers....and tight lines....Matt

  2. Lure depths change depending on where the temp break is... For instance today I put my king spoons in 45-50 degree water... I ran free slide cheaters on the riggers... Theoretically the free sliders are half way down the "Bow" of your rigger rod... Took a few really nice buckeyes on my sliders today.
I let the fish tell me what speed to go... If I'm getting my king bites at slower speeds, then my slider spoons will be regular size stingers ( more tolerant of slower speeds).
Find the temp break from mid 50s to high 40s and the buckeyes will be there

  3. Been there a bunch of times.... The best is when your copper gets wadded up with the wire diver.... Good times!
I've had kings do a lot of weird things behind the boat... This Spring I tossed back a 10 lber only to have him dart under the boat... Next thing I saw was scales and a pool of blood..... Prop victim...
Great job getting your son out...

  4. Just my 2 cents:

    1. Entry fee, $200 is a lot of money if I have to run from Rochester.

    2. I always thought you should be able to leave from multiple ports, example if the tournament is in Rochester you should be able to leave from Braddocks and I Bay and end up at the weight in.

    3. No catch and release options, sorry I don’t eat fish and all my friends and family’s freezers are stocked and I have a lot of guilt if I had to throw them in the garden.

    4. No late entry, I want to be able to PayPal the tournament director at 9pm Friday when I know there aren’t 4 footers that are going to kill me all day.

    5. Why do all tournaments hate our only native species, the lake trout?

make it cheap and easy and they will come.

The Monroe County Offshore Classic was designed keeping the regular Joe weekend guy in mind....

The entry fee was created to include a donation to a local charity.... Most tournaments do not do this ( healing waters might be the only other one, but I may be wrong). 200 entry is on the low end of all the tournaments on the lake.... When we decided on the initial dollar amount entry, we envisioned at least 3 guys per boat...say 75 bucks per man ( 3) including fuel. Not terrible considering I once paid a 4 person share of 250 each for a West end tourney.

As far as ports.... Rochester and Irondequoit bay are the participating ports. Braddocks has not been ruled out as a future port. We are just waiting to see how the dredging is working out ( there were some small issues earlier in the season with accessibility)

As far as signing up at the last minute.... I will be around Rochester the Friday before. 5pm is the cut off, however you will have to arrange to meet up with me before then. I explained that with pay pal comes fees.... And In the spirit of the tourney being 100% pay out ( minus the donation) we wanted it to remain as is for this year.

Now to the claim about Lake Trout.... Only being able to weigh one laker actually protects the species a little.... No one will be out raking 30-40 Lakers off the bottom if you can only kill one. The 5 fish box allows regular guys and charters to compete. Catching 5 fish usually isn't a problem for most..especially this year.

Last year there were people at the weigh in that took unwanted fish...

I get people will be reluctant to enter tournaments.... In fact anyone who, knows me will tell you I'm not a big tourney guy. What I am is, a guy who is proud of the fishery we are blessed with around Rochester. I'm proud of the diversity we have and I'm tired of the Monroe County area being the least talked about port on the Lake.

Good luck to all you guys who are thinking about fishing ANY of the tournaments on the lake. Tight lines boys....Matt

  5. Ok guys.... The date is approaching fast.... Give me a shout to arrange signing up. This event is lining up to be as good or better than last year. The lower water levels have made for for transient slips available....and what more can be said about the fishing this year!
