  1. We must have been just outside of you. Our best morning bite was 180-190 FOW, then 215-225 FOW later in the morning. All big kings for us with a bunch of steelies thrown in. Bigger kings must have been on the outside in deeper water.
  2. Nice fish. I'm sure Tom stayed behind and scrubbed the boat. LOL
  3. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:A-Lure-A ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):7/4 Time on Water:bout 2 hours Weather/Temp: 90 Wind Speed/Direction:sw Waves: 1ft Surface Temp: 72 Location: Rochester LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: Don't keep counts Total Boated: Don't keep counts Species Breakdown: kings and steelhead Hot Lure: spook and nbk Trolling Speed: 3 Down Speed: 3 Boat Depth: 170 Lure Depth: 80-90 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Got out at a crack of 9:30am start yesterday with my fishing partners and our wives. This was a first for us and we knew we had to be on fish within minutes to keep their interest. As luck would have it, even in the high sun and calm water, we had non-stop action on Kings and Steelies for two straight hours. Biggest king was around 20lb, biggest steely about 12 lbs, and we lost some screemers. Ended with a nice swim to cool off with a couple beverages. Awesome end to a great morning with good company, perfect weather, and insane fishing. The fishing is as hot as it could get right now. Here is a picture of me and my wife with one of our steelies.
  4. Fishing off Rochester is horrible this year....sorry, can't even say that with a straight face. Fish between 100-200ft and you will have no problem finding fish. Good Luck, DR
  5. I also like to thrust the fish in head first to force water through their gills. Also sends them down to deeper/colder water faster. Couple things to consider are to burp the fish by rubbing their belly if they are taken from deep water and try and keep them out of the water as little as possible. I don't even net the little guys, just unhook them off the side of the boat. I also know some folks that went to single hooks instead of trebles. Really doesn't have an impact on their hook up rate.
  6. I think you will have better success if you shorten your leads. I run a 4 rigger spread and rarely set back more than 10-15 ft off the ball with spoons when fishing below 50ft. Above 50 ft, I’m back 20-40 ft and above 20ft I’m back 50-100ft. A lot of times the down rigger balls actually attract fish. Salmon typically aren’t boat shy. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve caught coho in the prop wash. Salmon are used to attacking large bait schools that create a lot of commotion not individual bait traveling on its own. Running spoons tight to your downrigger balls simulates this. I’m mostly using my spin docs of wire dispeys and copper rods, but if I run them off the downrigger I don’t fish them above 50ft down and I put them back about 15ft. Also, I run the fly 22 inches behind the spin doc. Hope this helps, DR
  7. Put a little epoxy in the crotch of your treble hook on the flys for your spin docs. For some reason kings manage to get the line jammed in there and break off. The epoxy prevents this from happening. Sounds like you had a great time! DR
  8. Thanks. Sorry more questions. Really appreciate the advice. How do you brine your cut bait? Have you brined the familiar bite with better success as far as them holding up? Thanks again, man. DR
  9. Sorry, forgot to ask this on the last repsonse. Are the new UV lures best used in low-light conditions or in the bright sun? Also, how deep down can these be run and still have the benefit of UV? Thanks, DR
  10. Thanks for the tip on the Erie Drearie cut bait. Does anybody near Rochester sell them? Thanks, DR
  11. I have a gift card to Savant Spoons. I haven't used these before. Appreciate any suggestions that anybody can offer on good choices. Thanks in advance, DR
  12. Fishusa.com can have it to you in a a couple days if you live in NY. They are in Ohio
  13. At least you won't have to worry about catching a lot of fish to win:)
  14. Just curious as to what releases everybody uses when pulling copper off their boards? Thanks, DR
  15. Tough fishing right now. I went out for an hour yesterday with the wife around noon to test some equipment. Put a couple rods down and ended up getting a couple steelhead. Seems like the best bite right now out of IBay is north of 200 fow for steelies. Had one rigger at 30ft and another at 25ft. Fast troll, 50 ft leads on watermelen. Hope that helps, DR
  16. Just interested to see if there are any others on this board entering the open division in Orleans this year? We did it last year and had a blast. Nice little tournament to promote a little friendly competition without losing your shirt if you don't win. Hope to see many others there this year. A-Lure-A
  17. The inside brown trout fishing is a very consistent fishery, but I have found the good brown trout fishing to dwindle after 8 or 9 am on most days. On the other hand, some of my best king salmon fishing has occurred after 10 am. A good game plan would be to take advantage of the early morning brown trout fishing for fast action and then move offshore between 8 -9 am as that fishing slows. Again, some days it can last all day. Two weeks ago on a calm/sunny day we still had browns firing at noon when we left.
  18. Agree. The area from wilson to olcott was best for us. We started in 60 fow water every morning and worked north until we found a good pod of active fish. Didn't have to go much more than 300 FOW. If you hit a couple in a row while searching than do circles and the rods should keep firing. The fish seemed to be group by age class right now with groups of <10LBS, <18LBS, and 18+ lbs. If you find that all your catching is a certain size then keep looking for pods of bigger fish. We had a period of two hours when all we hooked were fish between 20 and 25lbs and lost some bigger fish that it makes me sick to think how how big they could have been. Best bite was 50-80 ft down on anything green. Green/white/glow in the morning or overcast and green/silver mid morning until late afternoon and in the sun worked best for us. I might add that I have glow on almost every spoon I own. Good Luck!
  19. What model Saltist would be best for a wire dipsey rod? Also what model would be best for a 10 color? Thanks in advance, DR
  20. Planning on buying my first copper rig. Think of getting a 450 paired with the Tekota 800LC and Okuma GLT 8.6 leacore/copper rod. Also, mainly plan on running this down the chute. Questions: 1. Any comments/suggestions on the combo I mentioned or better recommendations? 2. My thought for buying the 450 is that I can only run the copper part way out if the fish are higher...ie only put the 450 out 200 on the line counter if the fish are in the 40-50ft range. Is there a problem doing it this way? Can I run it off the board with a release doing it this way? 3. If I'm running the copper down the chute and have a wire dipsey out on each side should I pull the copper when doing turns? Thanks in advance. DR
  21. Looking for pre-rigged lead core set-ups - rod/real/line...the whole gig. Anybody know where I might find these?
