I regularly fish both the lake and tribs. Is it just me or does it seem that more large browns (>10lbs) are caught out in the lake rather than the tribs? I have seen and caught many, many browns in the tribs but have always consistently caught larger browns out in the lake. Browns I catch in the tribs seldom exceed 10lbs but browns I catch out in the lake often exceed 10lbs. I see folks fishing the lake consistently posting pictures of 14+lb browns but I can honestly say I rarely see browns this big in the tribs. Would make sense that the larger browns should be caught in the tribs since this would likely be where the largest concentration of mature spawning adults would be but that doesn't seem to be the case. Just asking out of curiosity if anything.

I wouldn't worry about having too much extra time for hobbies with a newborn. Take it from me a year in to it. Sleeping might be a good hobbie to take up:)

LAKE ONTARIO MEETING with D.E.C/Sea Grant Tue Oct .7th

Still seems odd that we aren't seeing an abundance of legit 40lb salmon if there is so much bait around. Are all the salmon maturing early because of all the bait and not making it to age 4? In the 80's and 90's did they all mature late because there wasn't enough bait and many were able to make it to 35lb to 40lb by staying in the lake an extra year? Did the hatchery used to get all 3 and 4 years olds and now they get 2 and 3? I don't disagree that there seems to be alot of bait in the lake, but I just don't understand why the salmon seem to be getting smaller on average? I'm purely basing this from the salmon tourneys that I have been fishing for the past 30 years. Does anybody have any actual stats on the average weight of salmon over the last 20 to 30 yrs by age class? I would think that would be a decent indication on the health of the bait population. -

Nice report. It has been a late offshore bite this year but the bite out there has been fantastic the past couple of weeks. My guess is that these are salmon river fish still migrating down the lake. Caught a couple big mature coho out there. As far as I know the salmon river is one of the only rivers that get a significant coho run. River guys should be in for a stellar steelhead season. Big and plentiful.

Most teenagers are next years mature fish and won't stage this year. They will stay out in the open lake feeding.

Start in 80-100 FOW and point North. Seems there are fish from 100FOW to 400+ right now. 200-250 was decent (not great) for us last Sunday. Keep an eye on the graph. -

Advice for new angler / Iron Bay area...
Sweet Caroline replied to Oncebitten's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Fish Hawk is a must, especially in the Summer. Don't need to go crazy on spoons or spin docs initially (easy to do). Get muliple spoons (2-4) in a few differnet color patterns. Downriggers first, then dipseys, then copper/lead core IMO. -
Tomorrow from 8am to 10am the Monroe County Conservation Council is hosting a kids fishing derby in Power Mill Park (north side). They recently stocked a couple thousand nice browns and have closed the area to fishing and will open it at 8am tomorrow for the kids. No sign up or registering neccessary...just show up ready to fish. There will be 3 prizes, largest boy, largest girl, and largest fish overall. Sorry for the late notice, but better late then never I guess.

Set up in 50-75 FOW and go north from there. Water depth changes fairly quick between 50 and 300ft, Keep an eye on surface temps and your graph. If temps start to drop more than a couple degrees stay on the warmer side of the break. If you are marking fish, try and keep your spread near the marks. Kings generally are caught >20ft below the surface all the way down to 100ft or more. Shouldn't have to put your rigs deeper than 100ft to find kings, although some folks like to fish super deep (100+) for larger kings this time of year down there. Coho/steelhead can be found in the top 20ft. I like to troll fairly fast keeping lure speed between 3-3.5mph. Use cores, dipseys, riggers. As a general rule, lead from downrigger ball to lure should decrease as you go deeper, i.e 20ft down 50-75ft, 60ft down 10-15ft. Any trolling spoon with some green/silver in it should work 90% of the time. You can try spoons with orange or pink in them if you are targeting coho/steelhead in the top 20ft. These are just general guidelines to follow which should get you some fish. Hope this helps and let us know how you make out. DR
