We lucked out with #3 Laker, but would have been better off with the #4 gift bag. I agree with you on the kiddos, they all should have got something back. Sounds like BP was suprised to get the # of kids they did. It's a new derby, maybe they'll change things up. Sure glad the Almond size hail we drove through onthe way home did'nt hit while we were on the water!!!

I seem to remember paying $25 for the derby entry fee last year. This year it's $30 with the lunker. Is this correct? Did they reflect the change in the payout money? Just curious.....

As usual, great info. fellas! Right now my oldest nephew is 12 and the youngest is 10. The older boy landed a 24 pound carp last year, so we have him on the right track. Good idea on some form of a leash. I found that knot while searching. Seems the obvious way to go, stupid simple! Thanks for the advice on the spin doctors and colors. I'll plan to go with one of each, just to get a taste. Are there different sizes in the spin doctors and e-chips? Sounds like the standard dipsey may be the way to go. I will also get that trolling book. Can't wait to see their look with that first screamer! I bought this with great visions in mind, but our second baby is priority one at the moment. I have an Early 80's Sylvan 14' Aluminum V bottom boat for sale. The interior of the boat is the standard three bench seat arrangment that has been redone in wood. The trailer is also an early 80's, 2" hitch. The motor is an older Johnson Sea horse 10HP that runs like a top. A friend has the same motor and has had very god luck with it. The prior owner recently had a dealer install a new water pump. The trailer lights are ok, but the drivers side may need a little TLC. Being it's fall time, I'm going to put a good price on it. If I have to keep it til spring it will be a little more. $750 firm seems more than reasonable to me. I have a few more pix if your interested. Chris

I have three Seth Green or otherwise known as thermocline rigs for sale. 2 have Penn 49 reels and the other has a Penn Senetor 6/0. All three rods are around 7 foot with roller tip ends. All are fully rigged with heavy line and bead chain for your leaders. I also have a box with around 6 leaders rigged with spoons ready to go. If you want to catch LOTS of fish, these are proven derby winners. $80 Each or all three for $225 I would rather not mail these items, but am willing to meet at Bass Pro shops in Auburn for the exchange. Here is the answer: How does one distinguish Seeforellen Brown Trout from "German" Brown Trout? and do "German" and Seeforellen browns run at different times? Seeforellens and "German" browns are different strains of the same species. Seeforellens can be distinguished by finclips, although only fish stocked in the Menominee, Kewaunee and Root Rivers are generally clipped. Differences in the time of spawning and age at maturity can also be used to distinguish each strain from the other, but physically the fish are very similar. The "German" or Domestic strain of brown trout may begin staging in harbor mouths for their spawning run beginning in July, with the majority of the run occurring in September and October. The spawning run for Seeforellens generally occurs in November and December. The age at which the fish matures is also a distinguishing characteristic of each strain, with the Domestic brown trout maturing at 2-3 years of age and the Seeforellen at 3-4 years. This later age of maturity in the Seeforellen usually allows for greater growth before their first spawning.

Well.............Time to give a little back to the board. Sorry for the delay, but here is the Brown we ended up with. It took top in the "odd" class at 11.8 lbs. My luck charm son is also in the photo. He's got the makings to be a real sportsman! Anyway, the real kicker is we got bumped off the lunker pool by 1ounce!!!! We were not able to put the time in the derby that we wanted (about 7 hours for the weekend). We did'nt boat all that many fish, but one is all it takes This was actually the first hit and fish I landed (via jig in 65 fow) on sat., about 8:45. This year has been a he!! of a ride for me and my buddy Gordie (who took the top brown in the Red Cross derby). We started in 70 fow and slowly coverd depths out to as deep as 120. We tried to fish over bait. It was difficult covering lots of ground, I would really crank up the trolling motor and by the time we saw a solid suspended mark, it was tough to stop the boat to target it. There is no doubt that it can be done, it's just a matter of knowing the area better and hitting a good concentration of fish.

Well...........We tried the jigs on sunday (oswego). We did have a few chase, but did not get a hook up. I think it is worth another try or two, but we would need to find a better concentration of fish. On a + note we really got into the smallmouth of the break walls of the harbor. and my buddy nailed a really fat 8.5 walleye. Great way to end a slow morning.

Jykell-Forgot the zebra mussels. I know about them all to well here on the fingerlakes. We seem to bring them up on our jigs about 1 in 5-7 drops. it seems that the fish know they are on there as well.

King Davy- Thanks for the advice. We've got the method down well here on the fingerlakes. We've been using heavy Bass gear (7.5' heavy HM rods) with 10 or 12 pound XXX spiderwire super mono (little stretch). I may bumb up to 15 for the big O. Jekyll- Thanks for further advice on the buzz bombs. Do you have an idea of the weight for the 4 and 5 inch jigs? Thanks, Chris

Thanks for the replies guys. What Buzz bomb did you try. I checked their website and they list length of jigs, not weight. I shot Ardentangler an e-mail. He has a pretty impressive website. Thanks for the replies. Just the confidence that I need. Davy, I hear you loud and clear. I've been digging my old trolling equipment out in preperation for fishing up there. The more I rig up the less excited i'm getting. Personally I would rather catch 1 on a jig vs. 5 trolling. I love the hook set! WOW 250 FOW with a 4 ounce jig, that's wild! Any other recommendations on jigs? I've built up an supply of buck tails, plastics and salt water jigging spoons. Mostly 1 oz stuff. Some of my jigs are rigged with #4 trebels, sounds like it may be a good idea to go one size larger? Also, what pound test should I be thinking. Right now I'm spooled up for 10 and 12. Thanks, Chris

I did a search and came up with little. My sister just moved 5 miles from Olcott and i've been toying with trying my luck up that way. I've been jigging on the finger lakes for a few year's now and have built up some confidence in the technique. My question is: has anyone had luck with this method on the big lake? or is there too much water to cover to make this a viable option? Thanks, Chris
