  1. We will be mixing it up between Sampson and Watkins. We will be floating in the lucky charity case (16' Discovery with an aluminum center console). $30 and a dream! Don't be shy if you spot us, we can bull$hit with the best. Chris
  2. Anyone have the info. on any derbies on Owasco? Last year we fished a Bass Pro derby there and I believe there is another derby as well. Thanks!
  3. Thanks for your reply. Well.....We decided to go to Oswego and landed a 4lb and an 8lb Brown east of the harbor. We started our troll in harbor with nothing to show for it. Both fish were landed on flatlines with trolling weighted stickbaits. nothing off of the planners Chris
  4. Hey Fellas- Swine flu got me , I'm heading to Port Bay or Fair Haven tomorrow at sunrise. I have an idea on the planner gear. Never splashing down in these ports, can anyone suggest a direction to go to get the best creek mouth/ warm water coverage? Thanks!, Chris
  5. Thanks for the comments, it was the S. end of Cayuga. By the sounds of it I'm not the only victim. I get the sense that they have a general disrgard for fishermen and that their actions were intentional. The class certainly was not green, they handled the boats like they knew what they were doing. I'll stear clear of the area in the future.
  6. Went out on sunday with my father-in-law and 4 yr. old son. It was choppy so we only flat lined 2 rods. A local college has a sailboat club and they had a dozen or so 2 person sailboats out. They had 2 motor boats at the edge of the group of sailboats just in case there was a tip over and I'm assuming to ward of other baots from their area. This is just what we did (stay well outside and away from the motor boats. We had turned and were heading away from all of their boats. The next thing I know all the sailboats barrel down on the rear of our boat. (25 feet away) I tried to grab the rods and dip the tips in the water but the keels grabbed the lines and it was a huge mess, so I cut the lines (cut off 2 of my favorite J-9's). Two of the boats with ivy league pricks told us we were in the wrong. I was pi$$ed and my first thought was to chuck the fire extinguisher at them. I remembered who was on the boat and held my tounge. I calmly told them they were in the wrong, motored up and went home. I'm still pissed about this, any thoughts? I'm considering sending them a letter to refund my lost tackle and for an appology of their attitude.
  7. Thanks fellas- The J-9 have been working well off of the planners as of late. Makes sense for them to work deep as well. Fo they work with flashers and spin doctors as well? Robert, I'll be sure to give the lucky crafts a shot! Interesting tactic stopping the boat and changing the ball depth. Sounds like it's worth a shot. Lavarocks
  8. I've always gone with what I've been taught. Stickbaits on planner boards and spoons/ flies on riggers. Do any of you guys run stickbaits deep off of riggers? If so, what kind?
  9. At this point I but mine, I'm a bit of a green horn. Has anyone made a thread on how to build your own or the best place to buy the pieces? What is the cost of building your own vs. buying? lavarock
  10. Interesting subject. Knock wood, I have never had an issue. I have 2 cheap Eagle 320's. I also fish in the middle of winter with the boat, so regardless they are going to see freezing temps.
  11. I'm hoping to get out on the bar for the first time ever this weekend. I did a search and could not find the #. Does anyone have the phone # for the coast guard at Fort Niagara and Oswego (summer fishing). Just trying to get my phone programed - just in case. Thanks
  12. Great info. ? - Talked to a serious troller the other day and he says that he ties all of his rod handles to the rod holder with a clips. The reason being is he has had the line on rods break and they jump out of the rod holder due to the release of tension. Anyone else have this happen? First I've heard of it.
  13. The lake is up a little from what it was. Cayuga inlet is still froze solid. Taugh is open. Lavarock
  14. News to me. A few months back a couple guys from PA caught a long skinny Brown around that weight. If I remember righ the fish was 36 inches.
  15. The launch is clear but be very careful under the bridge. It's super shallow.
  16. I was watching a fishing show that was filmed in Canada. The guide caught 2 types of lake trout. One had the coloration of most of the fish we catch from Cayuga, the other had a orange colored fins with strong white stripes on the leading edge. The guide remarked at the better taste and orange flesh of the orange finned lake trout. Over the year's I have caught a few lakers with a prononced orange flesh from Cayuga. Does anyone know if there are different strains of lakers in Cayuga? Thanks Lavarock
  17. I would like to get my father in law some walleye tackle for Christmas. I'm not very in tune with this type of fishing. I've searched here for ideas, but became confused with options online at bass pro. I would be taking him to Owasco lake and possibly Onieda. We would like to try a combo of still fishing and trolling (my boat is geared for salmon trolling (2 dipseys/ 2 downriggers) Here is my list so far- 2- smithwick rattling rouge 2- thunderstick jrs. 2 jointed rapalas 2- husky jerks Jigs - mix of bass pro bucktails (black, red, brown) I'm confused on the worm harness rigs. Any advice on a over the counter rig to buy, or should I make my own for him (what parts do I need) Any books/ videos to recommend? Thanks......
  18. Thanks for the report and glad you had success! I've yet to get the yak out for trolling, but it is on my to-do's What's your thought on running a dipsey/ wire rig with the yak?
  19. X2 on this unit- This is a relatively new product that work GREAT. I Just bought one at wally world and the pump WITH batteries was around $11 bucks. The bags are also reusable.
  20. I don't have the dough at the moment for a down temp./ speed set-up. Off the wall ? (I'm in the office way to much)- If I were to always place one rigger ball at say 80 feet, then use a square to mark the cable agle to the side of the boat, would I be able to determine my down speed? I realize boat movement is a veriable, so let's say given calm conditions. Just curious if anyone else has tried this.
  21. I'll stop lurking and join in the challenge with one or both of my nephews (10 and 12). I've wanted to meet some of you guys for a while now. It's tough to seperate the BS over the computer
