Thanks guys, a few keeper salmon have been falling victim to the stealth boat as well. The last few year's Cayuga has really been producing some trophy Brown's, I hope it continues for 2010!

There is lots to consider. I have a 18' Alumacraft and went with the a 24 volt minnkota. My last boat was a 16' with a 12 volt minnkota. This set-up worked well 90% of the time. It was marginal during derbies when the weather really got snotty. This motor was the 54 inch shaft and under whitecap conditions it would occasionally come out of the water and after a few hours the battery fizzled (always had a spare). Look at the conditions you plan to fish. If you don't find yourself out on rough days and you fish 3/4 days, you should be fine with the 54" 12 volt (still consider the 60"). I primarily fish with jigs and under the conditions listed above and my occasional Niagara River fishing the 54" and 12 volt won't cut the mustard. The 18' I have sits higher then my old boat, so a 60" was a must and I ended up going with the 24 volt system. You also need to consider cable drive vs. electric. I've only known electric so it works for me + I can control it any where in the boat. The downside is they are slower and you have marginally less control. The price difference between the 12v and 24 v is considerable as well. It's also discouraging to read all the negative reviews on ALL the trolling motors available (read up on Cabelas and bass Pro reviews) Good Luck

Best fish out of the Yak yet. For those that have tried, you know it's not an easy feat. Taken flat lining a rapala stickbait. I think they were on the feed bag before the storm, She tipped the scales at 10 lbs. on the button. 20 minute fight, awesome air show, no net, 6 lb. line = a great way to beat the winter blues.

Interesting that sun tan lotion is mentioned as a no-no. I jig lakers a lot and have been playing around with various scents. Without my knowing, my 13 year old nephew put suntan lotion on his jig when whw intended to put uncle mikes on it. He was significantly out fishing me. Once I realized his mistake, I tryed the same sun tan lotion and low and behold I started hooking more fish. Another fellow told be that preperation H ointment (not the cream) is made with shark oil and really works as an attractant........Anyone verify?

Thanks again for the input. I ended up buying a F8 with the tiller handle. It was a demo and I could not pass up the price($1,500). I'll give it a go and see how the year pans out. The same dealer has some other smokin' deals on other T and F motors. PM if you need details.

Good Ol' Lewiston. I fished this time of year there last year for the first time. I patiently waited in line for my turn (2 wheel drive minivan and 16 foot boat). In the mean time this bozo in a 1 ton decked out diesel 4 wheel drive whips his rig to the non salted area of the ramp. Dips his boat and spent the next 5 minutes slowly smokin' through the ice inching his way up the ramp. Driving past him in the minivan, well PRICELESS!!

In my opinon you are a few year's too late. Seneca surged in pike #'s a few year's ago and had both banner #'s and size of fish. Since that time something has really decreased their #'s. Your better bet may be Cayuga. So far the fish appear to have not been effected the way Seneca has been. Good Luck

Thanks for the input guy. Finally talked to the dealer today. He stated that the T models are geared different. So....... He recomended a the T8 DELH model. This unit comes without the controls. Any recommendations on controls? Do I have to go with the Yamaha 703 remote? Are there better cheaper options? Thanks, Lavarock

Hey Fellas- I'm pricing out four stroke kickers and could use some advise. The motor will be going on a 18' Alumacraft. I would prefer to stick with a Yamaha as that is what the main motor is. I found a local dealer that has the following: F 6 MLH F 8 MLH T 8 DELH (high thrust) T 9.9 GELH (high thrust) T 8 PLR Researching on LOU, many have had good luck with the T8. It's $400 more than the F6, is it worth it? Can I put a high thrust prop. on the F motors or is the gearing different? Thanks, Lavarock

Great info.! I think I'll invest in a copper rig and spend this year comparing it to the 10 core I already have. Could I rig up 200' sections of copper on swivels and add them together to achieve greater depths as the season progressed? What is the best swivel to quickly link 2 sections? Lavarock

We'll I've done some extensive searching in the archieves and still have some ?'s. I'm going to buy two set-ups to run off my big boards and I can't decide on copper or lead. I have a current non level-wind/ no line counter the I run streight out the back that really produces. Is copper and lead equally as good against the fleas? Is there anyway to clip the copper/leadcore to the big boards or must I go to the monobacking? 80% of my fishing is on the finger lakes and the other 20% is on lake O. Would two 400' copper rigs fill my general needs? If so, would adequate backing and copper fit the accudepth 57? Thanks, Lavarock

That's the first I've heard about Locust being toxic. Here is what Wikipedia had to offer. Unlike the pods of the honey locust, but like those of the related European Laburnum, the black locust's pods are toxic. In fact, every part of the tree, especially the bark, is considered toxic, with the exception of the flowers. However, various reports have suggested that the seeds and the young pods of the black locust can be edible when cooked, since the poisons that are contained in this plant are decomposed by heat. Horses that consume the plant show signs of anorexia, depression, diarrhea, colic, weakness, and cardiac arrhythmia. Symptoms usually occur about 1 hour following consumption, and immediate veterinary attention is required. Should I take any special precautions working with it. I built a large dock with it once and saw no ill effects. Just curious? The first planner board (32") is built and the primer is drying. I was only able to get a 45 degree angle on the planner lip. The plans called for 60, hope it is ok (the locust really maked the power equipment grumble).

Thanks for the thoughts- Explainin' the splinter is alot easier then splanin' what I could be catchin at Kumas Oak is the same weight, so it should work. I'll make one and try it out.

I'm building a new set of boards and thought I would give Blck Locust (the natural pressure treated wood) a go. My only concern was the weight of this stuff vs. cedar/pine. Then again I see posts were guys were drilling lead into the bottom of the boards for better stability. Any thoughts before I build. Thanks....

For a green horn, there are other methods to put fins in the boat. In my opinion, you should start SIMPLE and jig for some lake trout. This is my prefered method, don't get me wrong I love trolling as well. If at all possible put a bow mount trolling motor on your boat if you don't already have one and tip a 3/4 oz. or 1 ounce jig with a shaker or fluke and jig away. It keeps the kids busy and I have had several kids in the 8 yr. old range land BIG fish. PM me for more info. Good Luck, Chris

I am right handed and learned to crank the reel with my left hand and cast with my right. When jigging with a bait caster I buy left hand models (crank is on the left) because this is the most comfortable. All of my trolling rods have hte crank on the right. This is unnatural for me, but I deal. Anyhoo, I'm in the market to upgreade to higher end rigger rods/reels. It appears cabelas Gold is the only company that sells a left hand crank (left handed) unit. Are there other makes/ models? Does anyone else have this issue? Lavarock
