  1. I was fishing opposite longpoint on the west shore sunday morning. We had no luck in the hour + we jigged for lakers (50-90 fow). My little one got board, so we went perch fishing in the same area. In 19 FOW, my 5 year old landed a 26 inch laker on a fathead minnow with his 4 lb. ultralight. Talk about a proud kid - Dad as well for that matter. The water temp was 58, and even the perch we caught were stuffed with sawbellies.
  2. Thanks for the report. Glad you found some good fish, it's been tough for us as well as others. May have to try a bit shallower next time!
  3. Thanks for the tip lakertaker. We were getting perch south of Dean's for a while, but it fizzled out. Is the bullhead bite over at mid lake areas like Dean's? I have not been around enough to figure it out.
  4. It just goes to show, right place at the right time with a big dream! Way to get it done!
  5. Carp are so under rated! We to discover the limitations of your tackle. Landing a hog trout with the same gear will be no problem! Way to Alec-thanks for the report.
  6. I think I've answered my question. We went from zero panfish to as many perch as you are willing to fillet. The panfish are in full spawn mode in the central portion of the lake - great time for a fish fry!
  7. Last tuesday I noticed that the lake had indeed turned over (during the sunny/ calm spell). This is mid lake Cayuga. We went from zero panfish to catching panfish one after the other. I'm not sure how much temp. change effects breeding fish, but I'm sure a blow on the lake will very the temp. greatly and these fish are seeing these swings daily. Food for thought.
  8. Just noticed yeasterday that the lake went from crystal clear to to cloudy. I'm guessing the lake is turning over. Maybe it's pollen (seems that would stay on top). Anyone approach the fisheries different when it turns over? Stuck at work, thinkin' fishin' -Lavarock
  9. Chowder - Thanks for the report.
  10. Look at the smaileson those kids, you'd think they were at Disney! Heck of a crew and thanks for the report.
  11. Went with my 5 year old. The North tip of the lake had a smokin' laker bite. Had 8 fish on in 8 consecutive drops. Brought 2 home for the cook pot. Several had small lampreys. Have yet to put the FF on, guess was 110'. Wee-man got frustrated (tough for him to get a hook-set on the lakers - he did reel all mine in though). Anyway hit the Canoga Marsh area for steady perch action (went through lots of dinks for the keepers). Wee-man managed to land a Pickerel for a bonus - triple play for the day. All in all a great father- son outing - Thank you Cayuga!
  12. I have a similiar issue with my 1993 alumacraft 90 HP Yamaha. It' s a bear to start after it sits a few days (fairly certain no fuel). Tonight I used starting fluid and once it got going it ran fine. The bulb never really gets hard as well. Is the suggestion to replace all the rubber lines to the tank + bulb, or should I change anything in the tank itself? Thanks, Chris
  13. Great info. - might have to give Seneca a try this year! When you guys are working the steep drop offs in the areas you mention, do any of them have notable currents? Thanks
  14. Hermit- Sorry for your afternoon hassles. Year's ago I had a parking brake slip at that same launch. Not to worry the truck did not go into the drink, the driverside door caught the dock piling and turned into an accordian - really sucked. You have my number as well if you need assistance.
  15. Thank you for your efforts on this derby! I hope the rewards for the salvation army are equal to the rewards we get being able to enjoy the fishery. Seems like a win-win situation (great cause and great times) Very fond memories from last year.... Lucked out with a personal best Smallmouth that found a place on the board. Caught while fishing for trout - you just never know........
  16. Could not make last night meeting as well, thanks to those that were able to go. Any measure of the impact the lampreys have had on the trout population? Any comments about the impact of the power plant intake on the sturgeon? Thanks, Chris
  17. Was planning to go last night, but bailed due to the slick conditions. Anyone make it?
  18. Shane- I've been going to the keys the last few year's hand have learned a LOT. You have 3 types of fishing to try. Reef fishing on the Atlantic side, Deep Water (big game) fishing on the Atlantic side and back country fishing on the gulf side. I have yet to go for big game. For reef and back country look no further than Capt. Freddie (let him know Chris from NY sent you - he has a summer place in the finger lakes). CaptainFreddie.com Hoghaven and the OV are fantastic bars that do a great and reasonable job cooking your catch. Good Luck, Chris
  19. Last saturday I ran the cobwebs out of our little fishing boat between Elm and Popular Beach. It was mirror calm and we could see down to around 25 feet. I was amazed by the lack of fish. No panfish, maybee 6 trout/bass and 20 lathargic bull head. Also very little vegatation. I have heard that the panfish winter over on the north end flat of the lake and when the water warms in the spring they migrate down both sides of the lake. At times wayves of panfish swim to the south. Anyone know if this is true? (we due well in this area of the lake May/June with perch)
  20. All right............ This may have been a fluke........ Walked for 5 hours over 2 days, 4 different spots and flushed 2 birds. Lots of Coyote tracks and for the first time ever, stumbled on a fisher track. The last 4 or so turkey nesting seasons have been very poor - likely not great for the grouse as well. May be time to try out coyote hunting.............
  21. I have not gone enough to make a true comparison from year's back. The first outing we busted a group of 4-5 birds, another area that usually produces was a bust. Yesterday we had one of the best days I've ever had. I lost count of the # of flushes (some of the birds we bumped multiple times). We hunting the Finger Lakes area. Food sources change over the year's and over the seasons. Areas we hunted 15 year's ago have grown up and no longer hold birds. Find the food - find the birds. We were hunting transition areas, areas that had been heavily logged 8 year's ago(lots of small beech / aspens), brush lots with lots of multi floral rose / fox grapes. We only hunt on calm wind days and snow cover is prefered. Yesterday we hit it just right before the midafternoon front rolled through. Good Luck-
  22. IF your planning to hunt snows locally it may be a crap shoot. I look at the main part of Cayuga every day, as of now there are no snows on the lake. They are very touchy to hunt. I know several locals that hunt them in Canada (fall) and do well. Let me know if that is what you are interestedin and I'll get you the #. Lavarock
  23. What county are you in? Near a lake? I'm in Tompkins County. The highest lyme disease rate in the state (by far). The ticks are worst along the lake edges (but they are spreading). Last fall I took the kids anddog for a walk through the woods. Everyone had at least 12-15 ticks by the time we returned. (tore our clothes off at the door and jumped in the shower). There are areas that we do not deer hunt until it freezes. Our dog has had lyme twice now - just sucks.
