Tom, that creek pollution assessment only makes the case for NOT stocking Atlantics in Sandy. Wasted funds. I am all for stream rehab but fed dollars going to stocking Sandy with Atlantics is still my tax dollars. Put them all in the Salmon River or remove the dam on the Black River or use the other Sandy and S.Sandy creeks North of Salmon River, anything but putting them in frog water.

Since the Great Lake basin is a historical wet area with a high water table, I wonder why they haven’t tried creating springs to add cool water. I see there is a technique to divert water back into the ground to cool then brought back up to be added back into the trib. This plus riparian shading with trees with large canopies that can be planted away from the edge of the stream might be the only answer. Silly to stock a species that isn’t going to make it just so we can say we tried. Agreed, stop with the money wasting half-assed approach.

Something to try next time out, if you want to release a walleye caught in deep water, try closing their mouth and dropping them head first into the water. I have been doing this lately and the fish seem to rocket to the bottom. I think when they open their mouth and drag for a while they have trouble getting their mouth closed without assistance- which affects their breathing. Obviously, if the stomach is out, they are not releasable.

With the big paddles, I slow turn the boat on hooked fish to try to keep the paddle in front of the fish instead of over its back flapping when they turn and burn straight away. Less likely to have the hook cam out.

In case anyone was wondering, the walleye bite can’t get any better. We TREID to target steelhead after quick walleye limits and had to give up despite increasing speed to 2.8 and dropping everything deep into cold water. Could not keep the walleye off the line. Fished off the Catt today. Salmon dudes bring your riggers and dipsys ….its all you need.

Nice to have a fish report with plugs! Size 3 plugs work for most of the year.
