  1. I have 8 of the Coldwater 453s and had exactly the same problem as described in the previous comments. Seemed to get worse after a year of use. After 2 years I called the Okuma office and complained. Even though they were out of warranty, I was given a repair authorization number to send back to Tuna Tony's. Talked to Andy on the phone and he said the new drag washer setup would solve the problem. Sent them out and had them back two weeks later. Just paid for shipping out. They are excellent now, no problems. At the time about 2years ago Andy said they don't sell Coldwaters any more because Okuma never fixed the problem. Don't know if they fixed it by now. I also have Covector 30s for spring browns. I have since installed the washers supplied by Tuna's and they are much better. Installing the drag washers is not difficult.

  2. Been looking at them myself. The Suzuki looks interesting. There were some comments about it not being a true high trust because of the gear ratio but it is very similar to the Merc in displacement and gearing. The Merc is made by Tohatsu anyway.
The one that differs is the Yamaha T9.9. It has a much smaller displacement and lower gear ratio to compensate. The Suzuki 9.9 has the same displacement up to their 20 hp so it is a detuned 20 which will be working a bit less. Certainly like the idea of fuel injection as I am tired of carburetors.

  3. The deep cycle batteries are usually not maintenance free. They are very thirsty and require water frequently. If you are not very vigilant and let the plates get exposed, they will be damaged. Some look like they do not have access to refill with DISTILLED water but if you look and pry carefully the covers with caps are there.
I have been using the Duracell type from Sam's Club. They are made by Deca batteries in Pennsylvania and have been good for the price. Of course keeping them fully charged as much as possible is the other factor.

  4. I have a 36 volt 112 lb Terrova on a Trophy 2052 I/O. Boat weighs 3500 lbs. I troll with the main engine running as slow as possible, about 650 rpm with the 4.3 Mercruiser. Use the Terrova as autopilot and to control final trolling speed as necessary. It is extremely good at those functions. My problem is deploying it and retrieving it when done. Can be bad in 3+ ft waves. I don't believe you will have much luck using it as the only trolling power source on a 3500 lb boat.

  5. Bat 1 to bat 1 term on switch, bat 2 to bat 2 on switch, all positive on boat to output of switch EXCEPT supply to automatic side of bilge pump. That goes directly to a battery. That is in case you turn off the switch the auto side of the pump continues to work. If you can't fit all pos to the output of the switch neatly, run a red battery cable to a suitable buss and hook all pos there. ALL neg can go to a single, neat negative buss.

  6. Take a look at a company called Oceansouth. They have a stainless one for up by to 96 in beam for a very low price of about 150. Seen it as low as $127. Seems too good to be true. Look at the boats for sale in this forum and there was a Trophy 2052 that was sold a few weeks ago with one on it. It comes with 6 rod holders but you can add more as the Trophy shows 8.

  7. Don't forget about Sylvan, that is part of the group. A few years ago I was looking into buying a used Starcraft. They wanted $500 to transfer the warranty to a new owner for a two year old boat. Didn't buy it, crazy company.

Called again and let them have it. If they do not reply today I will go on a anti starcraft, starweld, smokercraft campain. I'll keep you posted.

  8. I have a Sea Nymph GLS 175 with a 70 hp Yamaha 4 stroke. I use it for early spring browns. Also use it heavily for bass and walleye on Sandy Pond. Last year I put on a Motor Guide XI3 which is functionally the same as a Minnkota terrova. It is a 52lb.54 shaft 12v that was on sale at Cabellas. Paid $949 and got a 50 rebate on top so final cost $900. I use it as an autopilot for spring browns with the main motor pushing and the XI3 steering the course on low power. Easily gets about 5 hrs out of a good battery doing that but I keep two on board. Has the "anchor"function that works great for bass on a windy day.
