  1. For sale one manual operated Big Jon dual Planer board mast and base (need to pull base off of boat prior to sale). Mast is 6' (two section mast). Base provides quick install and removal of the mast. New line last year. Very good condition. One spool has crack where handle mounts to it. It can still be used as is you just need to be careful when pulling the line back in. I also have a spare spool that the same thing happened to before. The crack on the spare is not as bad as the one currently on the mast. You could probably fix it if you were handy. I am upgrading to electrics and can't be bothered. $125 complete. I prefer not to ship this but will at buyers expense.
  2. Different boxes take different packing. As for amount you need to have pieces the circumfrence of your shaft. You buy a long piece and cut to desired length there will be several pieces stacked. When I changed mine I changhed them out of the water and just replaced with the same amount I removed. They make a neat tool for removing the old material. Worth the few $$ to buy. Google packing for stuffing boxes and you'll see a ton of info on the subject. Spike
  3. I guess I understand that they are trying to reduce the mortality of released fish but wouldn't that apply to either season in or out?Pretty sure the fish isn't going to say "Oh I'm in season therefor I shall survive after being released" ?????? This really doesn't make any sense. Either allow pictures of fish released in any season and educate the public on correct handling techniques or just disallow the taking of pictures of any fish released. Enforcement is also going to be an issue. Spike
  4. Just solved my problem! Ordered up a Cisco system! I also went electric as well. Heck you only live once and I'm not getting younger. Thanks for the insight on BJ having issues (not just me). Spike
  5. I had a 25' walk around with twin Johnson 150's on an armstrong bracket on it. They are a great boat. Mimic of a Grady, built down the street from Grady's way back when and workers would switch between the companies depending on who was paying more at the time. At least that is what I was told. That 25 I had was awesome riding. I don't know how it differers from the boat Sean rode in but mine was a deep V with a 19 deg dead rise. Trim the tabs down and she'd eat up a 4' chop at 24 kts. We would launch off the tops of a few rouge waves back then and landing wasn't always smooth lol. I had a lot of compliments from other boaters running in side by side in rough seas they never saw a 25 run so well. Like I say key to that boat was nose down and 4k rpm. She liked to run fast. Fishing wise it was a very stable platform. Only reasons I got rid of it was because it liked to drink the fuel and running a six pack out of it six guys was crowding it. If I had had unlimited funds for fuel and wasn't chartering I probably would have kept it. Spike
  6. Well Since I broke the first one I have always tried to pay attention to the stress on the handle when reeling them in. I also slow down and steer towards the board. This trip my crew reeled in the boards and I didn't think to warn them about the stress on the handle. I can't see myself replacing these every year or two so I think it's time to upgrade to quality. Cisco here I come. Thanks for the responses. It's always nice to know your're not the only one having problems. Spike
  7. I bought up a bunch of rats for my trip. Only caught fish on the goby color due to the clear water. It was hot for us one day anyway. Here is my Oscors revenge out of the package: I think quality control took the day off they packaged this lure. BTW I had a steelhead abosolutely destroy a smithwick when the hooks got tangled in my net and he was going ballistic. Cracked the plastic and the anchor pulled out. Can't really blame the lure for that one. I'll give the bay rats another shot hopefully under better fishing conditions. Spike
  8. I saw ciscos while looking for an alternative. Not cheap is an understatement.
  9. Second instance for me now the plastic around the handle has cracked, and the replacement isn't cheap. Anyone else having this problem? Spike
  10. Next morning we headed out in pea soup fog. Knowing we were the first boat out made it a little easier but not great. We put the boards out only far enuf to see them. Took a hit on a rigger but missed the fish. short time later fire tiger stick produces a mid teen king. Then we hear a boat come just inside us and start setting up. Not being able to see him I headed away from the engine noise which pushed us out deeper. The water got colder in just a few feet difference and all we saw for it was a bunch of small steelhead and kings. A while later the fog started to lift a bit. We hooked up a 9 lb brown on a orange spoon down 6 back 70. We worked that area a bit producing no more bites. With the fog clearing up a bit and being able to see fairly far we headed back inside to the warmer water. That produced zip as well. Then while back tracking the fog came in thick aain. I knew there was a bunch of boats around us and trolling in that mess would be tough. We pulled lines and headed in with plans to get back out in the afternoon. The afternoon produced more small steelhead and kings. Not what we were looking for. It took a while but we landed a nice 7 lb brown and then dropped another right at the back of the boat. That would be it for action for us as the lines went dead. We called it around 6:30 and headed in. Another great trip for us. I have had better catch rates but our quality of fish wasn't bad and we seemed to do better than most that we ran into. Can't wait for August to get here. Spike
  11. Bear with me I'm working on ten hrs sleep in two days. Not something I'm used to. Started mid day Saturday and only managed a small steelhead and some pig small mouth. Wound up dragging one color cores in to shallow costing us some lures and leaders. Went back to the cabin and re rigged with a different plan for day two. No cores out in less than 12' of water. Without stripping reels that left us with only six lines deployed. We started out at grey light and only managed a small brown and lost another. A little further down the shore we saw a pretty big fleet working an area over good. We headed that way and on the way picked up a nice 10lb brown. By the time we reached where the fleet was only a few boats remained. We got pushed a little outside and boated a very nice rainbow. A little further and a mid teen king was landed. We decided being pushed out worked to our advantage and we worked that zone producing nice steelhead. Tons of bait there and much colder water. That area produced a few more hits before we decided to back track to where we started. Half way there we landed a couple more Browns and another small steelhead. Hot lure was, yes the goby bay rat. We went home and were crashed by 4pm. We woke at 10 ate dinner and headed out for walleye. We fished till 4:30 and landed our personal best walleye. A just under 10 lber for my buddy Mark and a 7.5 lber for me. It was Marks first walleye and only my second. My first was an accidental catch from Oswego river. Fishing for salmon in the mid eighties. So after walleye fishing we went out for Browns. Fished till 10:30 and called it due to non existent bite and fatigue. Boxed four nice Browns biggest at 10 lbs again and threw back two small Browns and two small steelhead. I don't know how to post pictures from the phone so when I get home I will. Thanks to Andy on Broad Horizon for some advice and Jim from the clean station for some advice as well. Back at it tomorrow. Spike
  12. Does anyone else have one of these installed. I just upgraded from my tiller model and have discovered something that was a bit of a surprise to me. There is no tilt switch at the motor, only on the controls???? So to set my motor in the transom saver for trailering I need to be stretch armstrong to reach the control and hold the bracket in place. I called Honda and they said it didn't have tilt on the motor but maybe it could be installed. I contacted the guy who put it in and he said it wasn't available. I called another dealer acting like I wanted to buy the motor and asked if it had a control on the motor and was told it did??? So someone doesn't know what their talking about.......Question is who doesn't? I don't know if my guy ordered my motor wrong (no switch at the back) or if the other people don't have a clue? Who designs a tilt motor that can't be tilted at the motor?????? Sure I can back off the relief screw and move the motor manually but doesn't that defeat the purpose of the tilt? I fish alone alot and not having that feature is going to make trailering a PITA. So does anyone have one and does it have tilt at the motor? Spike
  13. remove core, use double uni knot no problems here. I have had Albrights come undone over time on lead core. Spike
  14. Curious what type of water your fishing over before you start using dipsy's? I have a trip planned early next month and was wondering if I should bring a couple dipsy set ups just in case. Thanks, Spike
  15. Moving the axles is easy. I had to do it to mine to get the trailer to run right. I started with a suggested 6" move. Turns out the 6" made all the difference in the world. I'd think you wouldn't want to remove rollers as they help support the entir weight of the boat and it's likely the trailer rating is based off of the trailer having all the rollers. Spike
  16. Isn't the tip plastic so getting it off is out of the question anyway, unless maybe with a heat gun??? Mine usually break off, lol. Making shorter rods...... Spike
  17. Well I did some research and these are knock offs. From mooselo something or other company. They looked good. Read about complaints on the finish tarnishing. Hope they fixed that. Was so hoping they were the originals. Hope they fish half as well. I got them at a local tackle store in NH. I see Kittery Trading post in Maine and AJ's Bait and tackle in Nh are also carrying them.
  18. Are they back in business? Hoping these aren't a knock off using the same name. Welded eyes and all. My supply was down to two so this will help. Spike
  19. Well this explains why the two on my boat went within six months of each other. I also am a limited use heavy weight user. I only use the heavy weights out on Ontario for one week a year after that it's 8-12lbs only. I did get an STX when my probe died and Cannon offered that up for a replacement. Guess I'll be checking all the brands out if this happens again. Thanks for posting this up. Spike
  20. I wasn't serious about my hey I have a thought in the above post..... Spike
  21. Wolfish must be returned to the water immediately as they are protected. Read a few reports then tell me how plentiful the pollock are. My buddy went out last week on a head boat and came home with 6 fish, his buddy two. And they do nort eat the same as cod or haddock. Yes charterboats will focus on the fish they are allowed to catch. Problem is the number of anglers willing to go on those trips are down and soon expensises outweigh profit. Many fleets shut down early this year due to that fact. Boats from the Gulf of Maine will not be relocating to Long Island to catch cod. Maybe boats from Long Island will be targeting cod but the headboats and charter boats wont be relocating. Spike I just had a thought....The goverment supports farmers when they have a bad season why can't they support the fishermen and recreational Charter boats (full timers of course) guys when they restrict them from fishing?
  22. Yes it includes everyone. Many charter boats felt the hit hard when they shut cod and haddock down Sept. 1st this yr. If I was a betting man I'd say this closure, which is only in place for 6 months because it is considered an emergency action, will be extended another 6 months come May and then NMFS will probably hand down further closures after that. It doesn't just affect the charter boats and commercial fishermen. It will have an impact on local marinas, tackle stores and lodging places as well as restuarants and other places visited when chartering a trip or fishing on a friends boat. The trickle down effect will hit them all. Some harder than others. Spike
  23. I'm assuming your talking about commercial fishermen and not recreational charter boats that take people fishing. Because if you are talking about the commercial fishermen they are the ones that put us in this situation. Well them and piss poor management of the fishery. Apparently what I was told led to this latestest "collapse" of the fishery is three yrs ago NMFS removed daily limits on the groundfish and allowed boats to catch their yr'ly quota in one day if they wanted to. Well my guess would be if I were a commercial fisherman and my screen was lit up I'd sure as hell scoop up my yearly quota in one day. Problem is the fishery could not sustain having indivual schools of fish completely removed or at the least depleted in one day. Thus the situation at hand. Case in point for piss poor management #2 (as the above statement certainly highlights #1): Back when I was chartering the ocean and limits were first introduced to the recreational angler we were told that NMFS counts every discard of a recreational fish as a dead fish and it goes against the recreational quota. Shortly after the limits were put in place it was argued that if every fish rec's catch is counted as dead then why not lower the length limit on groundfish to match those of the commercial guys? The rec length limit was adjusted to match the commercial limit. Keep in mind now I got out of chartering in 2008 and a lot changed since then. Cod went to a ten fish limit per person and then to 9 fish PP. Last yr haddock went from unlimited to 3 PP with a longer length limit. This amazes me how haddock could go from unlimited to just three in one yr. Changing the length limit (for rec's only) then resulted in more discards to go along with the cod above the 9 fish limit and below the increased length limit for them as well. OK NMFS are you STILL counting recreational discards as part of the recreational limit? If so the rec's will have the same quota but with discard rates soaring high which results in less fish to the end user when on paper it looks like the rec's are still catching and keeping their share of the quota. Total BS. No way a rod and reel fishery is going to hurt any stock of fish in the Gulf of Maine. The number of days to fish are limited by weather and the distance off shore limited by day trips, which would account for the majority of chartered groundfish trips. Can't say I know of anyone that takes their personal boat out groundfishing over night either (especially with the minimal limits in place today). So NMFS did what they did to preserve the fishery by closing the Gulf of Maine to Cod and Haddock. You can bet this will probably translate into a total closure for next yr as well. This is going to put commercial fishermen as well as charter boats out of business. Focus will be put on the few remaining groundfish that people would actually take home to eat, redfish, Hake, Pollock, Whiting, and cusk come to mind. I can tell you in all my charter trips nobody ever took home any of those species except an occasional decent sized pollock and very few wanted the cusk (though they are great eating). Cod and Haddock were the prefered fish and there used to be plenty to catch. Enjoy your fishery today because someone could screw it all up someday and never be held accountable. Spike
