  1. Ok, here is a report.

This afternoon,my 5 almost completely tame suburban deer came up to me as I was pulling out the tomato and pole bean plants from the vegetable garden. I threw the greens across the fence and some of it was hanging on the fence they happily munched on the greens about 2 feet away from where I stood and one of the fawns came up and sniffed my hand. It was a nice experience in my Brighton, NY backyard.

  2. I received my extra reels and 2 Penn 330 GTI reels and 1 Penn 320 GTI will be transferred to leadcore. The 330s will easily hold 10 colors and the 320 will be fine with 8 colors. I was thinking about taking the 10 color lines and splicing in a few feet of 30 pound mono at 6 and 8 colors so they can be easily used at different lengths when running them of the boards.Did any of you good people ever try this and if so ,how did it work out?

    Thanks,Cornelis.

  3. There really is no such thing as a cold blooded beast in outboard engines.

Usually there are a few problems that combine together and create the sort of trouble that you describe. It is never a bad thing to clean or change your plugs, specially when you troll a lot running a very low rpm. A slightly hotter plug may be called for in that case. A smoking engine is not usually because of a mixture that is too rich, but if you suspect your fuel mix, just mix a bottle with 1:50 and start it with that. If it does not smoke then you have too much oil. Improbable ,but possible. One thing you should check is your fuel enrichener. Maybe it is stuck in open position after you push the key in and only releases after a few minutes when the engine warms up.Another thing may be the air supply to the intakes. Some dirt in the air holes in your hood may cause this sort of trouble. How about the spark? Are all the plugs firing or is there a bad coil? How about the link and sync?

The best thing is to check the trouble shooting page in your manual and do all the checks. That way you go by trial and elimination. Always do the cheap things first.

The even better thing to do is to buy a manufacturers manual for your engine. The 1990s manuals are very user friendly. The Chiltons and Selocs are nice but useless and most of the E_Bay CDs are Selocs.

  4. The best thing to do is to go back to the one inch plywood and fiberglass it in again. You should use marine grade plywood which is very dense and you should seal it with epoxy resin and hardener. Once it is properly sealed and dry you can glass it in. The reason why your stringers rotted away is that the wood was not properly sealed before it was glassed in and when the fiberglass started cracking, the wood got wet and it expanded thereby damaging the fiberglass even more and enough for the wood to start rotting. This was a very common thing to happen in Bayliners (bilge liners)build in the early 90s,but it is the first time I heard of it in a Thompson.

Was there any flotation foam in the boat? If there was,was it dry or waterlogged?

When you have the floor out and the stringers replaced it would be a good time to check the flotation foam and replace it. You can either pour it in, which is best, or use the pink closed cell boards that you can buy at Lowes.

  5. Mine is usually winterized after thanks giving. My Brother In Law comes over for Thanks Giving so, dependent on the weather, we either go perch and pike fishing in I-Bay or brown trout fishing in the lake.

The worst part is having winterized and then pulling the boat out again because of very good weather in early to mid December.

Fall trolling is a matter of finding the best temperature. That is where the bait can be found. It is much like Spring with the fish in a frenzy to get the last few good meals before the long cold and hungry winter.

  6. Thank you all for your opinions and expertise.

Being mostly a weekend warrior I decided to buy an additional 2 57 daiwa accudepth reels and a Penn 320gti.

The accudepths will replace 2 Penn 330Gti reels at the trolling rods and the 330s will hold the 10 color core while the 320 will hold the 8 color core. This is a great improvement over the shakespeare tidewater 30 L reels that I bought for $8 a piece when a lot of K-Marts closed down.

  7. It is a good thing that this tax payers money robbing scheme has been exposed and disposed of.

On another note,by making this go away,we have not in any way advanced our very real need for alternative non polluting energy sources.

This means that we still have the same problems that haunt us,while countries like Germany and China are making giant strides toward environmentally clean and renewable energy,we are staying stuck with the same old same old. Germany has already 20% clean renewable energy and it has a roaring economy.

Having stopped this is one thing, now we have to think about tomorrow.

  8. The commercial pen raised salmon fisherys are doing well in Norway, Chile and British Columbia are doing well supplying salmon to the world's markets. Take a look in Wegman's fish counters. It could be the private concerns do something well and government agencies can not do as well.

I think that the Canadian government has done about a hundred times as good as the private companies. Not a single salmon has come back to spawn in the commercial fishing pens of the private companies 8):P:P8)

  9. According to my my son's girl friend, the problem that has to be tackled is mostly the smolting time that the atlantics need. They spawn very high up in the watershed and then the small ones will stay in the rivers for 2 to 6 years before they return to the lake. That is very different from the king salmon. Most of the stocking experience is with the kings and the cohos and in the beginning the atlantics were treated just like the kings and cohos. That did not work. Her Masters project is mostly concerned with an effort to find or create a current genetic strain that carries very similar if not identical DNA from the strains that lived in the lake 150 years ago.

At the same time there are watershed restoration projects in Ontario to the north and west of Kingston and in the future reaching into Algonquin park and the Ottawa river.

It will probably take a few decades, but it is happening.

  10. My soon to be daughter in law is working on a Masters degree at Queens university in Kingston on Atlantic salmon in Lake Ontario. She tells me that the Canadians have been very successful with the Atlantic stocking over the past few years. There is no reason why our side cannot be successful.

    SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

Left the Genny around six and had to maneuver between all the combat fishing boats (20) just to get out. Headed due north and on the way north I saw what I am pretty sure is Longline (who else takes pictures with a flash light at 6.30?).Along the way I slowed down a couple of times to see what the screen looked like and at 380 it was looking promising So I lowered the dipsy's and trolled farther out ,bur no dice.Picked it up again and went all the way out to 550 to find an empty screen.Started trolling back and as the trolling direction turned south, the bite started. Pretty much on everything I put out,all the way back to 370 fow. Got a few real nice hits, that came to the surface and started dancing on the water. Got a very nice 2 year old salmon and the rest steelies.

Thanks to Reeljerks for the deep water advice.

  12. I was just at Gander Mountain in Henrietta and they are selling 2 packs (2x300 feet) Mason 27 pound test leadcore for $14.95. This is usually somewhere close to $30.

Somebody must have put the wrong stickers on the package. This is your chance to get something for cheap.

    Cornelis.

  13. I think about replacing my leadcore reels and currently under consideration are the Penn levelwind reels like the 209,the 309 and the 320.

But I don't know whether the 209 will hold 10 colors of 27 pound test.Does any of you good people have some expertise to share?

Thank you for your opinions and advice.

    Cornelis.

  14. Cut bait and whole alwifes can sometimes give you an edge (if they're hungry they'll follow the scent), but this time of year I have found the best presentation to be very bright flashy colors to get them to hit out of aggression: Rrred's, chartruese, bright greens, flies with mirage in them, etc. Also, varying your speed can trigger hits as well. Pay attention to the other boats around you - if they are hooking up repeatedly, then you're probably missing something. If no one is boating fish, like this past weekend, then it could just be a tough bite. :$

So I tried some cut bait and I got the fight of my life...

    With an effing sea gull

  15. Metal tanks should be filled according to my dealer. The reason being air and metal cause particles to form that plug up your filters and injectors. Plastic tanks should be near empty. More importantly, use Stabil Blue Additive in the proper amount as to have a safe supply of gasoline in the spring. Lawn tractors and other machines that have vented tanks need the Stabil Blue as they are having fuel problems also.

Drain the lower units as metal particles will flow out now better as they settle out and do not flow out in the spring. Refill immediately, check your prop for fishing line wrapped around it that will destroy your seal.

The only thing that I would do different is the stabilizer being used. I would use "seafoam" stabilizer because this stuff also cleans out the carburetors and injectors.

  16. I tried both. Otter boats with single keels and Riviera triple boards. The riviera boats pull harder when you are running in a straight line in quiet water (Finger Lakes), but when there are currents or when you have to make a turn, the otter boats work way better.I have not run either of them in waves that top 3 foot, but the Otter boats are way more stable in the 3 footers. It seems to me that the main problem with the Riviera and similar boards is that they are way to high up in the water, because of that, they loose a lot of their effective pulling surface. The Otter boat's keel is completely submerged and that makes it so effective.

  17. Great story, love the father and son episode reminds me of my father taking me fishing...and it’s nice to see bigger fish caught in Lake Michigan again. I’m still wondering why the fish all of a sudden became smaller in Lake Michigan ? was it over stocking? to much or to little bait around? Climate/water change?

Why are Lake Ontario fish bigger? When Lake Michigan is deeper / with more shore line than Lake Ontario?

Anyone know the average size for fish caught in Lake Michigan as compared to those of Lake Ontario?

    Mark

According to the articles that I have read, it is because Lake Michigan is in a colder temperature zone, which makes for a shorter feeding/growth season. Add to that the quaga mussel that is making a big dent in the food supply for minnows and shad and you end up with smaller fish.
