  2. Centerpin rod needed and ultra light I managed to step on and break my Aventa centerpin rod. I need another one comparable or better. I am also looking for a nice ultra light rod for small stream/panfish. Larry

  4. The alevins have mostly consumed their attached egg sacs and are swimming freely around. About 1/2 the fry have left the basket and are swimming in the aquarium. The kids are adding gravel a handful at a time a couple times a day so the fish don't get shocked. I'm amazed at just how fast and agile they are after only a couple of weeks. We have 2 very large aquariums that we will begin pumping water into with a 2-way hose outlet coming off our chiller. We will add another pump as well to create an artificial current. This next stage of development has been interesting and only 3 or 4 died before consuming their egg sac. Interestingly there is one little fella that seems to have a very curved body but he is quick. We are waiting to see the growth difference between those who left the hatching basket early to swim freely in the harsher turbulent water of the open aquarium vs the fish that are 'chillin' in the egg basket still. 5. When I came in this morning the water temperature was exactly 52 degrees and this was great news. The chiller is doing it's job and the kids were rewarded with thriving brown trout alevins. In two weeks, we may have a few that begin swimming up out of their egg basket to feed. Of the approximate 150 eyed eggs we now have around 130 alevins.
  6. So far I am super psyched with the Okuma Komodo. I've only used it for 2 weeks but It is the best reel I've owned. Silky smooth, great casting distance and easy to use. I love the bait clicker too. I'm using it for float fishing primarily but it's been great as a casting reel chucking spoons and stuff.
  7. My son and I fished Artpark today. There's a few lakers jumping around but the bite was tough. I got bit off once and my buddy landed a nice walleye on a vibrax.
  8. For the first month or so the alevin (which are newly hatched trout) will feed on their still attached egg sac. When the egg sac is consumed we will begin feeding them food from the hatchery. They are still in their egg basket which the class made. The egg basket is your basic 10 x 8" storage bin with fine screen glued in. It floats perfectly. The stronger alevins are supposed to swim up and out of the egg basket in a few weeks. The gravel (similar to Irondequoit creek) is going in next week. Kids from kindergarten all the way to 6th grade are visiting the trout and asking a ton of questions.
  9. We have nearly all alevins swimming around now. So far, less than normal dead eggs. The kids are monitoring the temperature and quality of the water every hour. They are set for the weekend.
  10. Laker poop is "#2" on my list. We had a fish hatch today at around 9:30 a.m. The kids are psyched and we are hoping for more tomorrow. Only 3 dead eggs after 24 hours out of around 150. We are hopeful. The temperature is slowly inching down toward that 52 mark with the assistance of ice bottles being added a couple times during the school day. The chiller is working! I tried to take a picture of the little elvin, but it's hard to see. Here's the picture anyhow.
  11. Interesting question. I am running about a gallon of hatchery water and the rest is straight up spring water without any chemicals. Right now, I have no gravel in the aquarium but after they hatch, I would like to use gravel from Irondequoit Creek where they will be released in the spring, however I will be asking the hatchery folks about this before I do it. I have converted the entire rear of my classroom into aquariums to experiment with. We have 3 large set ups and the kids will control the variables in the 3 tanks to compare behavior and well being. The one constant will be the continuous flow of chilled water circulating through the fridge. Here's a picture of a nice lady clipping a laker. These were fingerlakes variety. They are kept in deeper runs with dark screens covering them to protect their sun-sensitive eyes. The other picture is the "Clarifier". The tanks were being vacuumed and all the fish waste is collected there. A local farmer raves about this being spread in his field. I'll have the kids find out answers to your questions. Larry
  12. I picked up around 150 eyed brown trout eggs today in Bath NY. The facility is great and the people were knowledgeable and nice. Ken was super helpful and set me up. The set up to keep the trout is not cheap and I needed to improvise. My son and I built a chiller out of a dorm fridge and 100' of garden hose. The way it works is; the hose is coiled through the fridge. We ran a ball valve to adjust the flow coming out of the fridge. This allows water to stay in the fridge longer or shorter depending on the temperature. Eggs like 52 degrees. Here's pictures and I will update on how it goes. Larry
  13. I'm proud to say that my 3rd graders will be the first class in our school to participate in "Trout in the Classroom". We have an effective, yet primitive set up for our classroom. On Tuesday the 18th, I'll be driving to Bath NY's hatchery to pick up our 100 eyed brown trout eggs. We will then place them in our aquarium set up in the classroom and await the hatching of our browns. I have an effective set up but I would have preferred a better chiller. Does anyone out there have an aquarium chiller we can borrow for the experiment. We will return it upon completion. The temperature we need to maintain is 50's. I will be posting updates on the experiment along with pictures of the progress. Captain Larry Hammond Andrew Townsend School 39 Rochester City School District
  14. A cross reference is for a 69 Chevy Nova. That may help you some. I would call Bill at Independent Marine. He is a wizard and knows that engine extremely well.
  15. I think you did a fine job!!!! They look terrific and I will be ordering for sure. Nice job!

  17. Hello folks. The American Cancer Society is hosting the first annual "Lure for a Cure" fishing derby. The headquarters is at Silk O'laughlins in Summerville on the mighty Genesee River. This is a trout, salmon and CARP derby, although if you catch a big fish, weigh it in! I know we have a lot of carp anglers in the area. Here is a chance to share ideas, baits, and tactics. Come on out to fish, eat and drink!!! Meet Patrick "Can't Touch This" Velyk and legend among legends. You can register at any time. There are great prizes and fun times in store. Don't forget raffles!!! Tight Lines and see you at O'llie's! Captain Larry Hammond Lure For A Cure Updated.pdf
  18. The Derby is a go this Saturday. You can sign up very easy by showing up Saturday at the Summerville parking lot!
  19. Yep, the Down Jigger. These retailed for a pretty penny in the 90's when I worked at B and E. They spent more of their lives on the shelf than in the water. Does it have the parachute still? A propeller would turn with the troll which would wind up the string and pull the parachute in. After it reached it's end, it would pop the parachute would cause your lure to slow way down and flutter. The propeller would then speed up the lure toward the "fish".
  20. Hello again. This event will be a ton of fun and a great chance to fish for a cause. Please spread the word about this derby. If you like fishing carp, come on down. You can fish a huge stretch of the river and lake side of the Summerville pier. There's kings staging out there and a very good chance that some will be within casting distance this Saturday, if not, already. We popped 'em in only 40' on Monday within eyesight of the Summerville pier head. Also, the Genesee Charter Boat Association met last night for our monthly meeting. We are actively planning a much larger event for 2017 for the Port of Rochester. For all you anglers who fish out this way, show your support for this event by showing up and fishing. Many anglers have talked about Rochester NOT having a Pro/Am or smaller tourney like the other harbors on the lake for a few years. The American Cancer Society is offering us a chance to do it! Anyone interested? Suggestions? I'm open for anything in the interest of spreading our sport and getting kids involved. Tight Lines!!! Capt. Larry
