  1. I can't speak for rshubuck, but I was out Sat. and there is a lot of warm water. @90 down over 300-400 we were between 50-52.5 degrees. when we got into water with 50f at 90 we marked deep bait and caught fish. we ran our riggers at 90 and 100 and dipseys with a mag ring at on a 3 setting at 330ft. If you find the baitfish down around 70ft work it well. Good luck this week Greg! oops didn't see rshubucks post while writting this one
  2. You need to catch one like that in a tourney so you can pay for all those spin doctors you bought before your wife finds out how much they were . Thats a great laker!
  3. not only a slam, but a nice one at that, great brown and nice rainbow
  4. it was a great day out there, not many fish but thats ok. The old man (qualitly time) and i have been fishing in all sorts of crappy weather, but it beats work anyday. At one point we crossed from sheldrake to the east side and lost site of land for about 15 minutes it was raining so hard. I think its safe to say we are both happy with his trophy, and we haven't backed out due to weather yet. We were quite pruned by the end of the day, but we will be out again ready to go.
  5. I was a little damp and bumpy to say the least. We were on the water around 6 a.m. and started trolling just south of AES. We trolled north to Sheldrake and back south past meyers and almost to the south end. We has a south wind to start and it turned north by the end of the day moving the warm water all over the place. We put 6 or 7 in the boat and lost quite a few more. I tied some leaders with smaller hooks and went too small. we lost a couple really nice fish because we weren't hooking them well. Our largest for the day was 7lb7oz laker. We could have done better but we chose to stay under cover instead of thowing different combos down. Mountain Dew spinny with proctologist did most the work and we tried out some of the 6" spinnys and did well on salmon with them. The end of the day the waves were stacking up pretty good so we called it a day. After we got the boat pulled out and were tearing down for the day we saw a guy with two kids launching a 12ft old aluminum boat that was hardly wider than a canoe. I went over to advise them that it was pretty rough out there (some 4ft waves) right when the two kids (around 15) were about to head out. After i said something to the dad he told the kids that "it was too rough for thier first time" :o and decided to pull the boat out. They couldn't keep the motor running and they had no life jackets on board . The whole drive home i was thinking about it and i can't imagine them actually making it past the light house. The waves were breaking and as narrow as that boat was i'm sure it would be hard to keep upright. Its scary to think that people would even consider going out on a day like that with that boat.
  6. awsome! Quite the mixed bag, and some great fish there.
  7. Barney and Bears, see splitshots post from a few days ago. They put on a good tourny.
  8. I would like to take the six pack course next time it comes around, but i can't find anything scheduled. I have looked at some things on line that say you need a certain number of documented hours to get certified. I would just like to know what i need to do before i take the course and whats involved in the course its self. For those of you who charter in the fingerlakes, i was wonder what the first year or two of starting out is like. How big of boat would you recomend to start? I'm just in the thinking stage right now but would like to start getting things in order. thanks for any info.
  9. It was fun watching rshubuck and his dad run back and forth from one rod to another, so that made it worth it. the dipsey rod will be back in action with a new twillie tip.
  10. We run dipseys with the magnum ring on a three setting usuall 300' or more back between 2.2 and 2.4 down speed. Does anyone have any idea how far off the side they would be going?
  11. Hitched a ride with rshubuck out of long point. We started trolling right off the point and headed north. we put a small laker and three small salmon in the boat at sunrise, then it shut down. We headed down to sheldrake and started again. Then a new pesonal record for myself, a 5"-6" landlock. I've never seen one so small, lol. We ended up catching another one about an hour later. I was soon to find out the reason to our bad luck as rshubucks old man asked if i wanted a banana. The curse of the banana haunted us with small fish and no action untill we made our sacrafice to the fish gods with a broken dipsey rod. The end of the day we were rewarded with about an hour of steady hits and better fish. We did 15 for the day with only 5 legal lakers and one legal salmon. spoon bite was good with dipseys being pretty slow. Slow day but still a lot of fun. Weather was great, weeds weren't too bad, and very few fleas.
  12. keep your eyes out on ebay. the wire is about the same as 30lb in diameter, so the line capacity of the reel should give you an idea. We have 600ft of wire on our rods plus backer. I got a good deal on the older okuma magda 30's which are kinda cheap built and the drags don't work well on a light setting but for the fingerlakes they work just fine. we took a trip out of oswego a few weeks back and a king that weighed only 16lbs stripped out 150ft of line on top of the 330 we had out. I would say bare minimum 600ft, but on these reels i hear you can spool 1000ft which would be better for lake ontario. Diawa heartland rods are popular, and i run the okuma classic pro. you want a good number of eyes down the rod to distribute the weight and you will have to put a twillie tip in the end.
  13. thanks guys, We bring them up easy and unhook the ones we can in the water. I just wanted to know how to burp the ones we have to bring in the boat. We were doing great till the water warmed up. Hopefully this will save a few more.
  14. I have heard of people doing this but have no idea what to do, or how to do it. We release most of what we catch but always seem to end up going back for a floater or two. I would like have better releases, so any help is appreciated.
  15. Hey rshubuck, i work with your old man at Vanguard. When your boat is all set to go let me know and i'll show you some of our cayuga set-ups. Send me a PM and we'll go catch some fish. Ben
  16. If i don't have to work I'll be there. Where are we sending the $10?
  17. I hope there not too much worse than the fleas out of Oswego 7/7, holy crap! We had lots of fleas on everything 30# big game, wire, copper, downrigger cables. It wasn't as bad out deeper but out first set was horrible up there. Hopefully the weeds pick a side of the lake and stay there this weekend.
  18. yeah that always seems to happen lol. I haven't been on cayuga in a while, but we usually start with the same program and adjust as needed depending on the day. we will be out of long point this weekend "Quality Time" on channel 68. good luck everyone!
  19. Congrats on the rainbow! We noticed the same thing with the bait, lots of bait with no fish around it. I think i heard about your bass on the radio, I heard smallmouth carp and started laughing. It is a fun derby, we went last year also, and i'm sure we will be back again.
