  1. As a long time Coast Guard Auxiliary member I get a bigger thrill out of hooking up and saving folks or their boats! Fishing I can do any time! Dr W Flotilla 4-7 Should you call for help I'm coming for you under Coast Guard orders or not!
  2. Fleas ?> does anyone have a good way to deal with them? There are some lines that they say will help like Flea flicker does anyone have and experience with them?
  3. Top Secret I do believe I saw you out there ? We had the riggers set at 50 amd 60 so the stack went from 60- 50- 45- 40 We could see the thermocline setting up at about 50 ft. Wednesday we went 9 for 12 so we were set up right I ran long leads and did not change anything ? Boats name low profile [Bayliner 24 foot hardtop]
  4. We got an extra early start [5am] expecting to find the fish where we left then on Wednesday, the weather was a complete shift and with a fresh west wind building the lake became rather bumpy and by 8;30 we called it . Not a single release! small pods of bait was around 125 FOW not a single hook [fish] around them. I suspect that with that full moon the fish gouged on bait last night and were not feeding. Hope others did better than we did BTW we only ventured out to 180 FOW so the fish may have been out deeper.
  5. I like Chinook divers best.

Some free advice ! Get a 25 watt ship to shore Radio for safety as well as talking to other fisherman

With the new Radios they all come with emergency systems and you get a number that identifies

you if you are ever in distress!  You have to register your vessel through Boat US but it is worth it!

The radio can be hooked up to your GPS and when you hit the red button your position is broadcast to the Coast Guard and we will come get you !

Back in the 1990's I ran a lot of Dodger spoon combos last year I picked up some Sutton hemlock spinners for live Bait and the Browns loved Sawbellies on them behind a small dodger.

      Pappy

Try that spinner or an O&M spinner ,same thing, with the frozen sawbelly for the kings off your downrigger with a long lead.

  8. I expect that things are going to get even better soon . I plan on getting out again by next week and think that using an old trick of a small dodger with a smaller spoon about 3 feet behind it will work well now. Haven't seen that used much after about 2000 .. Dr W
  9. I talked to folks at the dock who went deep and the did even better than we did. out around 250- to 300 FOW
  10. We were running all spoons and the action came on 2 on NK 28 frog with the silver back and 1 fish on black ladderback NK 28. All on the riggers and zip on the Chinook divers ?
  11. Short afternoon trip on 6/6 and the fish were spread out from 85 fow out we hooked 3 and all were kings 2 went back in but this one was to wounded to survive he was just over 10 lbs and is now in the smoker .
  12. I used to have one on my old boat and that worked for me and now they are out of business if anyone has one and wants rid of it drop me a note. I will make offer/ Dr W
  13. IF MONEY WERE NO OBJECT! My boat would have every bell and whistle GPS and Radar and auto pilot could make fishing easy ,BUT WOULD IT REALLY ? Navigation always depends on the human element and all those aids are just aides! I actually always have a compass , and because everyone will question even that compass I keep a hand held bearing compass on board as well.
  14. OF COURSE ! And GPS and I am now considering adding Radar! Remember all IO's have low speed wander and maintaining course is by eye The mate was not able to handle it.
  15. We took a short trip out of Sodus Wednesday morning and the fog was so thick that with out GPS you could not navigate, and to make it more fun the wind could not make up its mind which way it wanted to blow. Were there any other fools out in that pea soup? Dr W
  16. We who are with the USCG.Aux just want every boater to be safe and we try and do our part. We could sure use some more members too! so IF you have the time and want to help the boating community we can sure use the help. https://cgaux.org/
  17. I will do safety exams for anyone around Waterloo/Geneva on request I am a Coast Guard Aux Vessel examiner here in Waterloo. The Exam is free and goes over your safety equipment so you know that your up to code for the year. Send me a note here! Dr W
  18. Depends on your set up after you have about 8 to 10 lines out it starts getting complicated, and the experience of the crew Comes into play as well.
  19. When I fish deep I have been known to put the first line on the ball and then stack a roamer up the cable 15 feet so you have 2 rods on that Downrigger then put the slider on the top rod so you cover as an example 110 bottom 95 stacker and then about 45 with the slider Beware this can result is a tangled mess but you do hook up more. Remember that the lake has changed and it is harder to hook up with just down riggers and take a hard look at the Chinook divers made of Stainless they are the best I have found for deep and spread out well
  20. 100% roamers as well both on the bottom and up the cable !
  21. What color Bay Rats were working best and were they deep or shallow ?
  22. Fishnut The other reason is that the electric would be silent where the 5.0 makes some noise . I have both trolling bags and a trolling plate and can slow. Waverammer There is no good way to mount and run a kicker on this hull unless it were electric start and had full controls. The freeboard is very high and it would be tricky
  23. The Minn Mora 160 salt water was the one and would it be able make 2mph
  24. There is a twin ELECTRIC that mounts on the IO or cavitation plate of outboard with 160 pounds of thrust does anyone have any experience with this good or bad battery useage and power I have a bayliner 2452 and could put up to 4 battery on board
