Anyone have any information on waterfowl numbers and launch conditions for the upcoming late season in the western zone. Specifically on the Finger Lakes or Western Lake Ontario area? I'd like to make a run down after Christmas if conditions seem favorable.
Unfortunately I have not felt well the last month or so and have done very little in the way of hunting or fishing I just had little motivation.. I''m feeling much better the last week and am getting back into the swing of things. I think. I may have overdone it chasing walleyes this summer and the lack of sunlight this fall didn't help. I also keep getting nasty Why popups on this site which I can't get rid of. Only on this sit.. Thanks for your concern.
I actually haven't hunted or fished since I took the deer. The sleepless night, and many early mornings throughout the summer and fall finally caught up with me so other than processing the deer and doing work around the house I've been resting up. I'm also in no real hurry to harvest more game or fish as I currently have a good supply. I may even take a trip with my wife to NJ this weekend to visit my daughter and her family.
After chasing ducks in the morning I decided to try the afternoon opener with the muzzleloader. I took a shot with about 10 minutes of shooting time left and although I had a good rest and the deer acted hit he ran into pretty thick brush. An hour search turned up no blood or hair. After spending a sleepless night I resumed my search this morning and extended my grid. After another hour I actually thought I smelled it before I saw it. Certainly he's not a monster but I earned him and beat the coyotes to the meat. He was quartering to me more than I thought and I took out a lung and the liver resulting in the 200 yard recovery. I never did find any blood or hair. I've learned not to guess where a deer has gone and limit your search to that area when you don't find blood. You need to grid search the entire area as they often change their original direction of travel. This deer had made a right angle change of direction and wasn't where I thought he went.
Managed to get my friend Jim his first duck this morning on his pond. Nice male ring neck. Tomorrow is the last day of early duck season and then I'll be muzzleloading deer.
I agree. It's the sea ducks I've had a hard time finding a way to really enjoy them. Tried jerky, sausage and many other recipes and haven't found any I rally like yet.
21 lbs., 33 " grandson Shane is certainly my best catch of the year! Enjoying family wedding and weekend and taking a break from the hunting and fishing.
My brother is headed home to Cape Cod after a week spent together. We hunted for ducks and upland birds and even fished a little. Our weeks total was 46 ducks, 2 pheasants, a turkey, a woodcock, and 2 walleyes. A couple of good friends made our time in the marsh much easier for the two old guys. We ended the week with another good shoot this morning.

Unfortunately Pap and I weren't able to get out due to weather. Will try again in the spring. I may try the river again next week and am planning a trip to Quinte in November.
35-40 years ago there were very few deer or turkey in my part of the state and I had a beagle and loved rabbit hunting. I haven't done it in years but can still remember the fun we had chasing both cottontails and snowshoes. We also killed a lot of grouse. I've done a great deal of hunting for many species but can honestly say I never spent a more enjoyable day afield then listing to a beagle on a hot trail. I actually think they should shorten the deer season for a number of reasons including allowing guys with dogs more safe time to hunt.
Gabe Ward, Bailey, Ken, and I made a run to a State WMA this morning. Had a decent shoot with a mallard and 7 wigeon. Not bad for our first trip there.
