  1. Sounds like a lot more fun than my deep trolling but I have caught some on the same Bomber.
  2. All part of the learning curve Trapper. Keep trying those heavy bottom bouncers and you'll get the hang of it.
  3. In the past 3 week I've received about 9 personal messages inquiring about catching walleyes on the river. I certainly don't mind sharing information and enjoy the new contacts. Hopefully I've been able to give some helpful advice. I believe over the last few years I have posted a great deal about what works for me. However, I'm not certain that most people understand how difficult my methods of trolling in current and in the dark actually are. It's taken me several year and many hours to find methods that are effective for me. I honestly believe there is a thriving population of walleyes from Cape Vincent to Massena. I believe that If I were to explored new regions I could be successful within a few nights. That said, even when I take people out at night I tend to hook the majority of the fish. You really have to put in the time to get the feel of both the boat handling and presentation techniques. There really are no secret hot spots or methods. As the add says Just Do It. I hope to continue to share information and answer pms. I'll also generally give you my cell number if you want to chat. But remember there's really nothing better than experience.
  4. You can catch them throughout the day but the bite is not as consistent and they tend to move to deeper water. Also boat traffic makes boat control and fishing much harder.
  5. This time of year lakers will be deep 60-70 fow. Guys catch them fishing bait on the bottom and using jigging spoons. Also might try plastic flukes on 3/4 to 1 oz jig. Not sure about landlocks. Good luck.
  6. It's interesting to hear various opinions on what is an effective presentation. I've done better since I switched to wire on my dipsey rods. As most people know some days they mostly come off riggers, some days dipsys, some days lead core, and some days copper. That's what keeps the game interesting. It's also what keeps us all spending money on gear!
  7. I have a friend that charters that area and said the king fishing has been quite slow.
  8. I think you'll have difficulty maintaining contact with bottom trolling into current with 1-2 ouncers but they will work drifting with the current with worm harness but gobbies may drive you nuts.. Deep diving cranks will work into the current either off long lines or riggers. I catch many on stick baits but you need extremely heavy bottom bouncers or riggers to fish them effectively.
  9. I've fished most of them. Millsite has some great bass, and pike and also has nice lake trout. There use to be a good population of cisco but someone put smelt in and now they are the primary forage. I've personally caught smallmouths over 21" and even larger largemouths. I've caught lakers over 13 lbs. and have heard of some very large pike. Due to the smelt population many fish may be deeper than you'd normal target them. All the Indian river lakes are good and the 10 hp limit at most state launches limits large boat access.
  10. Very cool. I live about 10 miles from Red but haven/t fished it in a few years as I'm usually fishing the big lake or St Lawrence. I may have to give it a shot sometime.
  11. You can catch them during the day but you need to fish deeper and boat traffic may be an issue. Many spots I fish are basically not very fishable after 9:30 am when boat traffic increases. I generally seldom see a boat when I'm fishing. If you can't fish at night I'd fish from sunrise till 9:00 or the evening if that's possible.
  12. BSmaster, I use to fish smallies the same way but then went to a 1 oz sinker and drifted similar to drop shot rig. I caught tons of smallies like that in water up to 120' using electric to slow the drift. Now I do the same thing using jigging spoons and bucktails. You can certainly catch walleyes a lot of different ways even in heavy current.
  13. Current is extremely strong in some areas on the river. I troll into the current and my over water speed is extremely slow, sometimes I'm actually moving backward at idle. It's somewhat like hot-shotting with a drift boat in a river. I call it slip trolling and it;s not easy to do. There is a great deal of boat control involve working in and out of current seams. The lure action does change with current changes but I think that only helps trigger bites. When using heavy bottom bouncers I'm constantly slowly pumping the rod to feel the bottom and I believe this also triggers strikes.
  14. Tugger, The current is extremely strong where I'm fishing. I tend to simple slow as much as possible and continue to head into the current. I generally leave the rod in the rod holder and try to clear rods I release the line and raise the rigger and leave flat lines out or reel in the bottom bouncer. I head out into deeper water and then simply put it in neutral and fight the fish as the boat drifts down river. I often am a couple hundred yards down river by the time I land the fish. I may occasionally kick it in gear to maintain pressure. I'm probably successful landing 90% of fish this way. I don't have auto pilot on my Minn Kota and I don't think it would even hold me in many of the places I fish due to strong current. Even the 60 hp has to be bumped up above idle to make headway when trolling..
  15. Personally have never heard of catching them in LOTI. Most of the ones I catch are where there is good current in the main river.. LOTI is better to target panfish, largemouths and pike.
  16. I caught my largest eye of the year on the river this morning. Three hits and caught a 9.4 and a 4.3 pounder and lost one at the net about 6 lbs.. The last few outings I have only caught fish deep, so I was running a downrigger, a heavy bottom bouncer and as an afterthought threw out a TD11 on a longline with little expectation. You guessed it. I caught her on the longline, down about 22 feet over 35 fow. The other two fish hit a stick bait off the heavy bottom bouncer. One at 35' and one at 55'. It's definately a circus netting them fishing three rods solo in the current but it was a gorgeous morning. I've got a batch of jerky in the dehydrator, 18 goose breasts in the smoker with some duck breast to follow. Next I need to veggies from the garden and tonight I am doing a shore dinner for 11 friends and family on their farm. Man I'm busy but I love this time of year and am blessed to be able to have the time to do the things I love.
  17. I've made many posts on walleye fishing the river.
  18. Indian River Lakes have good bluegill and crappie fishing off the edges of weed banks this time of year. I like fishing them for a change of pace from chasing walleyes and salmon on the St Lawrence and Lake Ontario. Also some good bass fishing on those little lakes. I fish out of my Gheenoe with a six hp. as there is a 10 hp limit on launching from most of the small lake state launches. It's fairly low tech fishing using jigs, and ultra lite gear and you can often catch a bucket of great eating fish.
  19. Sometimes there's a 10:00 + 2:00 bite. I caught one at 12:15 the other day. Can't catch them unless you're fishing, just like you can't kill a buck from the couch.
  20. I usually only fish three people. The person who has caught the least gets first fish. I may grab the rod and make sure it is hooked up but always hand the rod over to someone else. With my Lund it's always a team effort with a driver, a neter and the third person handling the rod. Although there is skill in handling the rod the real skill is in setting rods and speed etc. to trigger the bites. I love seeing rookies holding a screaming rod!
  21. Great story. Thanks for sharing. I've jigged them in the Finger Lakes but I think it's time for me to try Lake O as it's a fun way to fish and that's what it's all about.
  22. I donated a half day walleye trip for a fund raising auction to support a cancer patient. It was a slow morning but we scratched out 5 bass and a walleye and it was a beautiful cool morning on the river. we had a fish cut off at leader, another straighten a snap swivel and I lost another one after a couple throbs.. Not sure what that was about but it might have been a good morning if not for some errors. The river seems to be in a bit of transition after the full moon. Hoping things pick up soon.
  23. Roughrider, You're right about the versatility of a smaller trailable boat. I've fished from the Niagra river to Lisbon on the St Lawrence, many Lake Ontario ports, Bay of Quinte, and several Indian river lakes. I've also hit lakers in Seneca and Cayuga and bass and pike on Conesus. I also use it to hunt ducks all over. Want to try the Hudson for stripers some spring. I feel very blessed to be retired and healthy enough to enjoy many days in the outdoors. I'm always up for a new adventure and have a wonderful supportive wife.
  24. Ran north and set up around 7:30 in 125 fow. Some bait and fish down 60-80. Could get them to fire but did get a skippy on a cheater spoon. Set up cowbells and slowed troll and caught a small laker. Figured if I wasn't catching fish I might as well not catch kings so speed up and set up more FF. About noon dipsy rod screams and ended up being an 18.4 king on FF 3 setting out 240. That was it for the day and we left at 2:00. The lake was flat but there was a very strong current . Sun was hot with no cover and o wind.
